Cheapest Way to Get The New iPhone 13?

Been waiting couple years for a new phone and whenever I buy an iPhone I just preorder it on release. I am planning to get the Iphone 13 pro max or whatever its going to be called. I was hoping to get some tips on how to save a bit. So far im planning to buy apple gift cards from shopback.

Any tips would be appreciated

    • Apple gifts from woolies can be used for online purchases right?

      • +2

Make sure you are buying Apple Gift Card (can be loaded onto your appleID/apply up to 8 per transaction for hardware) and not Itunes GC..

        • Thanks for the reminder, I’ll update the deal.

I forgot some people were burnt first time around because they bought the old iTunes gift cards and got 0 points.

      • I’ve copied this from the deal linked above:

        • You can redeem up to 8 gift cards (in conjunction with an Apple Account Balance and/or a credit/debit card) online or over the phone at Apple.

        • You can redeem up to 8 gift cards (in conjunction with a credit/debit card) in-person at an Apple Store.

        • You cannot redeem an Apple Account Balance in-person at an Apple Store.

        • You can load multiple Apple gift cards to an Apple Account Balance, but the maximum balance is $4999.

        • Apple gift cards have no expiry date.

        • So you buy the amount of Apple gift cards from Woolies to get the iPhone 13 and the “15% saved” is in Woolies points - so grocery money or convert to Qantas points? That’s the process in a nutshell?

God I hope they have $500 gift cards..

            Yes.

God I hope they have $500 gift cards..

The variable value gift cards (where you can load between $20 and $500) exist and are part of the deal, but you need to keep in mind:

            • Your local store(s) may not have any variable value gift cards in stock,

            • The store manager for your local store(s) may not want to sell you more than $500 in Apple gift cards in one transaction (or even one trip).

            • @WookieMonster: Good to know. Thanks for clarifying. So I should go to Woolies today and hide all the Apple gift cards? I’m on it

              • @Enjayeff: The problem may be that other people may have beaten you to the punch, considering the fact that the deal started this morning.

                • +1

@WookieMonster: Hahaha so it did. Thanks again Wook

Not even that. They were already hidden by staff members at one of the Woolies I visited today because people were abusing them to buy $200 value cards, rather than using the non-variable load $200 GCs.

    - Gumtree scam
    - sell organs
    - give Tim Cooks a nice Jobs ; )

  • OP how many QFF points do you have? They had a pretty decent sale last year, on brand new Apple stuff.

    • When do they generally drop the Iphone and then have their sale. I think I have 300k to burn.

      • I don't know if it's a regular thing, all I know is I spent some points around this time last year.

Wouldn't count on it but I imagine they might repeat this year.

      • If I have those sort of points, to burn, I’d be flying business class to Europe.

      • They only just had 10% off Apple products. I don't think there will be another one for a while.

    • I dont even have a qantas account🥲

      • +3

well get on it! And don't pay for one, they are easy to get for free.

Next you'll be telling me you don't have a cashrewards account :-/

    It's a phone,… It's not even interesting

  • For large discounts:

    • Buy with a credit card that has price protection
    • Buy when there's sweet 12 months plan and cancel immediately (probably no longer work)
    • In the unlikely event of the price error and being honoured
    • Buy on ebay with discounted gift card and get 50% cashback on social good (yolo)

    For moderate discount:

    • Wait to be listed on ebay and buy when there's sale and pay with discounted gift card
    • Maybe on Catch with discount code via student beans + pay with discounted gift card
    • Maybe Costco

    For minor discount:

    • Education store
    • Credit card with points or cashback
    • Cashrewards or Shopback

Check to see if you can salary sacrifice it - instant 37 percent saving

    • 45 percent saving… plus 2% Medicare levy…

      • You lose out on super but you also pay less Medicare levy

The final discounts are, for marginal tax rate bracket:

        • 37% = 35.5% discount
        • 45% = 42.7%

Apple Event is on 2 hours earlier in Perth. (1am Perth vs 3am in Melb)

Can anyone in Perth share details of what has been announced so far????

  • Do Cashrewards work in conjunction with Apple Store Cards? Also, CR sometimes does a special 7%, but bear in mind they exclude the latest iPhones.

    • Considering Shopback states the following under the Notes section:

Cashback is calculated based on the Order Value, excluding any GST/Taxes, Delivery Fees, & any amount paid for with Gift Cards.

… my guess is that that Cashrewards will not reward cashback on the portion of your order you pay with gift cards. However, the only way to confirm is to ask one of the Cashrewards reps (tightarse, minita).

Don't buy an iPhone 13. Buy a Poco F3 for $500 instead that does it all.

    • +2

      No, that would be embarrassing

Wait till they hit gumtree. Cash is king.

    • +1

cash is king? Why do i cringe when i hear these nowadays?

  • $1738 for Pro Max 128GB on the company portal.
Discount may be cheaper depending on what tier your company is on.

    • Can you stack that with discounted giftcards?

      • Not sure. I've never used gift cards before. But I'd assume the process is the same. If you can do it on the EDU portal then same thing applies. If it's the MDM portal then probably no.

        • Do you have a link?
I found one here but then under discounts and limitations it apparently doesn't discount the iPhone.

          • +1

@ChillBro: I guess you have to go MDM route then. You'll need to ask your IT Admin to make the purchase then remove the MDM if their willing to.

But I also remember seeing iPhone discounts on the Coles Employee Portal but at 4% cap and also remember seeing them on the CBA Employee Portal as well.

I'll ask my friends and check later.

            • @No Username: Please do! Also wondering if anyone is able to use those portal links or if Apple require verification somehow (most likely email?).

              • @ChillBro: Doesn't work price shows up as $1849. To use the portal, you just need to sign in using your normal workstation login.

                • +1

@No Username: Guys, even Apple employees do not get discounts on the latest iPhone every year.
So, there is not a chance that you will see a discounted price using an EPP store.

                  • @DoctorCalculon: Yeah I mentioned that above. MDM is the way to go if you want the discount.

                    • @No Username: Assuming you were great buddies with your organisation's IT admin, would the MDM hack work every year for a new iPhone?
Also, what is the discount percentage?

Furthermore, the purchase is legally the property of the organisation. By disabling MDM afterwards, your IT admin would be in dereliction of their duties. So, it gets kind of messy.

                      • @DoctorCalculon:

Assuming you were great buddies with your organisation's IT admin, would the MDM hack work every year for a new iPhone?

                        I don't see why not.

Also, what is the discount percentage?

Depends on tier, purchasing volume and your Apple Rep.

Furthermore, the purchase is legally the property of the organisation. By disabling MDM afterwards, your IT admin would be in dereliction of their duties.

If the business owner agrees to the purchase and you pay then I guess it's yours.

In the end if you have an ABN and DUNS Number you can just make an Apple Business Account and then do a group buy with family and friends.

                        • @No Username:

If the business owner agrees to the purchase and you pay then I guess it's yours.

Such agreements may work if you work in a small company. Forget about it if you work for a large organisation as the number of internal approvals you have to go through outweighs any bargain (unless of course you are the CTO or the engineering manager).

In the end if you have an ABN and DUNS Number you can just make an Apple Business Account

You would have to spend some serious $$$ in Apple products every year before you can reach the tier needed for any discounts. Again, not practical for the average Joe.

If you stacked up on the 10% off jb hifi cards then it’s as good as it gets for getting the device cheaper when it’s hot off the press later this month.
I am waiting to see if next month telstra day has meaningful discounts on 12 pro max, otherwise might as well get the latest greatest with those discounted gift cards. Personally Apple’s hype machine makes me think might as well get the 13 vs discounted 12, even though I think both are overpriced 😕

If you can, salary sacrifice and buy a new one every year. I end up breaking even or better most years. For example

    New 13 Pro - $1699
Salary sacrifice don’t pay GST ($1545 pre GST)
$1545 charged to pre-tax salary at 32.5% saves me around $500 in income tax, such that I see an approximate $500 increase in my salary that fortnight.

I have a 12 Pro 256GB which is in as new condition (always cased in an otterbox with screen protector) and box etc, and under apple care which based on current eBay sales should get me at least $1,200 second hand.

$1200 + $500 tax saving basically means the new phone costs me nothing to upgrade.

12 months later I do the same thing.

    • current eBay sales should get me at least $1,200 second hand

Do people actually bother with this though? I know I don't since it's such a hassle and you're dealing with scammers/timewasters.

      • I just sell locally in person. Have sold all my phones and never had a problem. However I use eBay past sales as a pricing guide.

        • This is very interesting. Are you able to share more around the process of purchasing the phone using salary sacrifice?

          • @bindtactics12: It's a work perk, so I am not sure how transferable it is across employers, but I am able to package the full price of a phone every FBT year.

            • @Pelicannn: Checked with mine, sadly can't use this

              • +1

@bindtactics12: Bugger. It’s certainly a great work perk that’s for sure so if you ever change jobs in the future check that stuff out as a feature of certain employers.

  • Hi, have an old 64gb iPhone XS with a cracked screen looking to upgrade from. Likely won’t bother trade in as apple wont give me much die to that, any better idea on how to sell it?

    • Get a replacement screen and hold onto it for another year?

Or sell it on FB marketplace / eBay / Gumtree (if you can weed out the crap).

  • Do you reckon JB HIFI will open pre-order the same time as apple?

    • They did.

    • I think JB HI-FI is the cheapest way to get an iPhone, if you can find gift cards at 5% off. I can through SunCorp Car Insurance (GIO) Rewards.

  • why can I not pre-order the iphone 13 pro max on the telstra website

  • Anyone know when Costco might get the iPhone 13 and therefore drop the price of the iPhone 12?

    • +1

IIRC, for the last cycle (IP 12), it was the following year.
So, you will be waiting a while.

Nobody discounts newly released Apple phones until after January.

Jump on the discounted gift cards bandwagon.

  • Hi, does anyone know how the apple trade in works? Say if I buy an iPhone 13 and pay portion by apple gift card and portion by cc. If I trade in my old phone, will Apple refund to my cc or they will give me another gift card? Thanks

    • They lower the price you pay. They will not refund anything.

Nonetheless, you get more money if you sell it on Gumtree if you don't mind dealing with other people.

      • you get more money

Same with cars - stealerships will always undervalue your trade in.

      • I sold my iPhone 12 in as new condition with 97% battery health for $850. Apple's highest for the iPhone 12 (128gb) was $680. So an extra $170 for a little hassle selling on Facebook marketplace. Also got $300 work of woolies gift cards from the Apple voucher promotion and will claim back through work salary sacrifice. So winning on a few fronts 👍🏼

  • I was looking at Shopback's 1.50% cashback for Apple and separately, Apple Education Store. Shopback specifies that for Apple store, there is no cashback on newly announced products (including iPhone 13) however does not specify this for the Apple Education Store, leading me to think it SHOULD give 1.50% cashback if bought from the Education Store. Has anyone bought with Shopback off the Education store? Will be contacting Shopback tomorrow. Thanks!

    • +1

Never mind, no cashback earned on anything paid with a gift card.

  • JB-hifi with 5% discount looks like the only option. I'm not sure if they allow stacking multiple $500 GC for pre-order
