Huon Tasmanian Smoked Salmon - $28 Per Kilo @ Woolworths

217

Huon Tasmanian Smoked Salmon Deli Pieces Cold Smoked 250g - always around $7.

I guess this is not really a 'deal' as it's always this price, but I just wanted to share with other smoked salmon lovers who may not be aware this product exists. I myself only recently discovered it in Coles & Woolworths as I normally shop at ALDI and get my smoked salmon there for $40/kg.

I had never purchased Huon brand before as the Huon 'normal sliced' smoked salmon is $75/kg.
It's cheap simply because it's not perfectly sliced. Instead you get chunks, pieces and thick slices, so it must be the reject slices that don't conform to their high standards.
I have to say this is probably the best smoked salmon I have ever tasted! The texture, oiliness, and saltiness is perfect.

Photo I took of the funny shaped slices & pieces in my pack: https://ibb.co/LYn9jnZ

"Farmed salmon is Australias most eaten seafood. Unfortunately there's a huge cost. Thousands of tonnes of faeces dumped on the seafloor, dead seals and sea birds, a carcinogenic feed additive, dodgy antibiotic use and such an unnatural diet that they need to dye the salmon flesh to make it look like the real thing.
Those who live near the farms, and many informed consumers have been fighting for change for many years. But most supermaket shoppers still think salmon is a clean, sustainable option. By informing them of the reality of the product they are buying, we can make real change happen.
Supermarkets have forced improvements in the food system before. This power is an industry game-changer. But Coles and Woolworths won't rock the salmon boat unless they know we really, really care.
Right now, 16,000 of you have signed our petition to demand improved practises and cleaner, healthier salmon - thank you! We need 45,000 more of you to demand a healthier product, demand care for the environment and stand up for Tasmania's marine life.

      • But not all of Huon's hatchery's have a "seafloor". So how does that work?

Any links to alternative salmon we can buy that's environmentally friendly? I don't go catching it all the time.

        • Hatcheries are an issue too:
"“A TOTAL FAILURE OF REGULATION”: SHUT DOWN SALMON HATCHERIES ON TASMANIAN RIVERS

The health of Tasmanian rivers is in severe jeopardy because of a complete failure by the state’s EPA to properly regulate industrial salmon hatcheries.

Root and branch reform of licences and regulation is urgently needed to avert further damage to the state’s rivers and the prospect of contaminated water supplies in Hobart.

The EPA’s director, Wes Ford, must act now to force industrial salmon companies to install closed-system, recycled water hatcheries that do not contaminate rivers – or he must close them down.

Most salmon hatcheries on Tasmanian rivers are flow-through, taking in fresh, clean water and discharging filtered but still polluted residue that can create dangerous algal blooms, health risks and foul smelling and tasting drinking water.

The discharge of nutrients, dissolved faeces and other contaminants is no longer – and has never been – fit for purpose for a major industrial undertaking.

Mr Ford has already acknowledged this in a public meeting.

The urgency is underscored in a detailed statement by an eminent Australian water scientist, Professor Peter Davies, AM.

His statement demolishes those of Mr Todd Walsh, a Huon Aquaculture contractor, who claims the salmon hatcheries have “absolutely minimal” impact on rivers.

Credited for his work on protecting the giant freshwater crayfish population, Mr Walsh is neither independent nor qualified to make an analytical assessment of nutrient flows, fish waste and other pollutants and their impacts.

Claims by industry spokesperson, Julian Amos, that “we are being unfairly targeted for things that are happening that are totally beyond our control” are a nonsense and the industry knows it.

It’s astonishing the industry relies on a contractor to defend the indefensible and it reveals the hollow nature of its claims to be sustainable."

Any links to alternative salmon we can buy that's environmentally friendly?

            • @Clear: Tasmanian government is not interested in it:

"An expert who quit a Tasmanian government panel overseeing the state’s Atlantic salmon industry expansion says there is no sound scientific basis for a planned doubling of production over the next decade, and that concerns she and another member raised were consistently ignored."

"The two experts, who resigned in protest from Tasmania's eight-person Marine Farming Planning Review Panel after the Storm Bay decision, believed the panel did not serve the best interests of the state, the leaked letter revealed.

They also believed the panel was geared toward approving "operationally convenient" proposals for the industry.""

@competitions: Ok so there is no alternative? Well I guess I'll be buying as normal then.

                • @Clear: Enoy! Ethoxyquin.

Developed by Monsanto in the 1950s as a pesticide, manufactured from petrochemicals, with a range of uses including preventing rubber cracking, ethoxyquin also ensures fishmeal won’t self-combust in transport, leading the International Maritime Organization to stipulate it as one of two obligatory fishmeal stabilisers to prevent fires and explosions.

@competitions: You know if you really wanted change, all those signing petitions spamming shit they've copied from random websites should come together and provide an alternative solution. It's like plastic straws! What does Maccas and Hungry Jack's now provide instead? Biodegradable paper straws.

                    • @Clear: I guess you missed the one website posted that you replied to that indeed is the petition and has proposed solutions. Seems you also missed the fact that the "advisory" body had two members resign as it appeared there alternatives or issues were ignored. Perhaps you also missed the issues with seabeds, rivers, feedlots. Are you a 'quiet Australian'?

                      • +2

@competitions: Instead of just pasting massive walls of text that everyone's going to ignore you could have just provided the alternative solutions.

It's really not hard if you want people to actually listen. The spammy shit sends the wrong message than what you're intending.

                        • @Clear: You are the one that asked questions and I replied to them.

Better to post text from experts rather than my 'thoughts and feelings'.

Comparison: It's like people commenting on climate change and disputing what NASA and other scientists say.

TBH I don't care about your opinion as it was 'clear' you had already made your mind up and just had baited questions.

                          • +3

@competitions: I asked for alternative solutions. In your walls of text I don't see alternative solutions. If you're going to link information then why not quote the relevant part?

Your increasing level of hostility really isn't helping your case. Why should I listen to you and your movement when simple questions are met with such responses.

                            • -3

@Clear: Do your own research. I don't want to add to the walls of text.

                              :)

Don't assume - I'm not part of that movement, but it's an issue that should be addressed and not ignored by consumers who don't know what they are eating, what affects it has on the environment, and by governments who are too lazy and beholden to ASX companies.

@competitions: I originally asked a question about alternative solutions and you chose to reply with walls of text. You should have just said that in the first instance. Would have saved a lot of time.

Oh well. It's a good thing most of the fish I eat I catch. The perks of having a shack at Coles Bay ;)

                                • @Clear: You lucky bugger! Those capital gains too!
Great spot, assume you walk Mt. Amos regularly?

                                  • @competitions: Surprisingly can't be bothered going to Amos all the time. Better to just take the boat out.

                                    • @Clear: Much nicer walk and less crowds thanks to Covid. Much more pleasant and less tourist trappy in many places.

Thank you for this information, and for caring.

      • The current practices of Tasmania’s salmon farming are pretty destructive. And for now, there are few alternatives to affordable salmon.

If suitable reforms can be undertaken, to make the practices more sustainable, and hold the companies more accountable, that could be beneficial overall. For those who are interested, there is a petition going around if you wish to support reforms in this space.

        https://www.change.org/p/peter-gutwein-premier-of-tasmania-c…

Earlier attempts toward accountability have been unsuccessful. State and Federal Inquiries have been ignored. Citizens’ health and safety complaints fall on deaf ears. And there exists no right of appeal against bad decisions. In order to find a way through this impasse, the Salmon Reform Alliance is calling on the Tasmanian Premier, The Honourable Peter Gutwein, and the President of the Legislative Council, The Honourable Craig Farrell, to establish a Royal Commission to enforce acceptable operational standards on this destructive industry.

The Salmon Reform Alliance is a non-government body of individuals and organisations concerned with the environmentally and economically unsustainable Tasmanian salmon farming industry.

Reform will help every Tasmanian affected by the salmon industry as well as every Australian who eats farmed salmon. Beyond that, Tasmanian salmon is exported all over the world, so this reform will have global reach.

What did I just read through

  • please downvote then, I was conflicted if it should go in forums or deals.

It's not on special, so I'll post it anyway. ??

You could have at least posted the Deli Bites that are on special for $20/kg

?? you said yourself it's not a deal

  • Looks like it's $5 at my local store. I usually order direct from Huon though, the Reserve one is just yummy.

    • Per kilo? Are you sure?

Good product, but not a deal.

  • +2

Thanks OP. I know it's not a special price but it's way cheaper than the $40/kg i normally buy it at also and usually don't buy this brand as the premium product is too expensive. Fingers crossed next time it's in stock at my local.

Maybe move to forums, better as a discussion post.

  • Its a yes from me.

    not available in WA

  • Are these "deli" pieces just scraps leftover from the sliced stuff?

    • I've had them before, and no, they're full pieces/bits of smoked salmon. It's actually pretty nice.

    • Less slicy, more chonky. I would say yes.

    • That's what I thought, like the 'pieces for cooking' by that other brand that literally have end bits that are brown and taste a little funny.
These Huon pieces are not 'end' bits at all.
Here is a pic I just took: https://ibb.co/LYn9jnZ

    • They are offcuts left after filleting: bellies (tasty fat meat), tails (can be dry), meat adjoining to heads (tasty too). Overall, they are good prices of meat, but hard to shape to a pretty form.

  • Interesting, I will try this. Thanks OP

And the state and federal government support this.

      • +1

yeah, not very visual when what happens below sea level mainly stays below sea level.

    • If antibiotics are taken out of the equation for a second, would the faeces dumped on the ocean floor be great for bottom dwellers like prawns, oysters, lobsters?

"Industrial salmon farms in Tasmania dump 10.6 million kg of poo a year into our oceans, creating marine ‘dead zones’ under salmon pens. Large boats and farm infrastructure are spreading into endangered species habitat - like endangerd whale calving habitat on Tasmania's east coast. And because it takes almost 2kg of wild fish to make 1kg of farmed salmon, salmon farming is emptying our oceans of fish. "

        Source: https://www.et.org.au/salmon_farming_tasmania

    • Purchasing these scrappy bits that might otherwise be waste makes me feel a little better about all that.

    • +4

I have gone right off Australian salmon since learning about all this. I did try a piece of wild Canadian (or might have been Alaskan) salmon from Harris Farm a while ago and it was so much tastier, and it is a nice deep red colour. Aussie salmon seems very fatty and slimey in comparison and doesn't taste anywhere near as good.

TBH, what a mess this post is:
    1. Isn't really a deal as the price of the product appears to be RRP
    2. Is more of a recommendation based on OP's personal taste
    3. The post is overtaken by some that are opposed to the industry in general (not this specific product)

I think that the moderators should close this one down and we all just go and have a good lie down.

    • +1

Agreed… Where's the bargain? This is just an advertisement

  • Don't like this brand, found it waaaayyyyy too salty.

"Competitions," stop spamming this post!!! If you don't think, it is a good deal, say so ONCE and move on. If you really need to let off some steam, find an appropriate forum and go for it!

    • It is NOT a deal. This is the regular price. People rightly have concerns about the supplier and are entitled to state it.
