I paid about $150 less than this for the L5P (5800H/16GB/1TB/3070 140W) which has a QHD screen.
For anything >$2400 i'd want QHD. Not sure if others agree.

    • Don't see the point of qhd on such small screens apart from it wasting battery and also requiring more performance to run at that resolution, especially at 165hz.

      • You wouldn't be gaming without it plugged in.

  • You are paying extra for the Alienware badge.

    • Yeah that’s generally how it works. I pay more for certain brands because the brand targets a corner of the market I find myself in. For Alienware it’s that they put out the best keyboards in a gaming laptop (and maybe even any laptop). They also make rigid chassis that feel premium. Then there’s my excellent experience with their warranty. So yeah , I pay extra for the badge, and all that comes with it. It may not be the best value but that’s not my only concern when purchasing a product. If it was I’d be driving a Korean econobox.

  • lol all commenters above don’t understand that dell fixes shit on-site that’s why you pay extra calm down please this is an amazing price plus at 15 inch 1080p looks great and saves battery

Many Dell laptops ship with 1yr mail in, but can be upgraded to onsite. Dell is not the only company to offer onsite warranty (Lenovo,HP), but their Pro Support is pretty damn good.

      • I paid for 3 years support with the L5P spec i mentioned above and it's still cheaper than this deal.

True but I thought Alienware and their premium models usually come with on site repair?

    Worth $1500 at best.

Maybe for 3060. This is 3070 so more in the range of $2000

  • Recent lenovo deals have been better value. Dell has on-site service, and you will prob need it from my experience. I've owned 3 Dell's, one of which was an Alienware. All have had issues. With one being retuned for credit. Their QC is average at best and their hard drive imaging is dog shit. Fresh OS install fixed the issues ont be recent unit. For now anyway..

The Dell outlet has some bargains pop up ever now and again. I'd never bug a new one from them again tho.
Better off with a lenovo or metabox.

    • +1 on the metabox. I've had 2 of them and both still going strong…

I'm just excited to see Thunderbolt 3 or 4 on a gaming laptop!

    • Silly question here but curious why? I get if it was with a much weaker GPU and you could benefit from eGPU but not sure what else I’d use TB4 for which couldn’t be achieved with USB C… unless you have crazy amounts of peripherals or external storage with high RW speeds I guess.

      • Not silly at all, I hope my answer is not silly.
My goal is to have an one cable solution (most likely to be TB3/4 or USB 4) to a dock (going to be expensive as well) for the below:
        - Dual 4K output as I do some photography work
        - Charging
        - Keyboard and mouse
        - Audio
        - External storage

I know a good business laptop is probably more suitable to the above.
But I just keep an eye on gaming ones as they have superior GPUs and can play games.

Fair enough. Well I just ordered a Lenovo Universal Thunderbolt 4 dock as I'm also chasing the one cable solution for high res/refresh display, charging, KBM, USB speakers, ethernet, and other accessories, but I intend to use it with my X1 from work, and my Macbook Pro M1, and various other TB/USB-C devices (hopefully it is as backwards compatible with non-TB devices as I've been led to believe). And yes I'm aware USB-C docks could do most of that but they all seem to suffer from one limitation or another resulting in some kind of compromise :(

The only thing I would challenge on your list though is I thought most gaming laptops draw >100w which none of the TB docks can provide so you probably wouldn't be able to charge/use simultaneously without it (slowly) draining.

          • @jace88: Yeah 100w seems like to be the case, eventually when I pull the trigger, I probably will have to give up on gaming laptops, or be happy with another charging cable.
            Thanks for pointing that out.

          • @jace88: I have a full gaming desktop so dont require most if these checkboxes but this is the one check I would give to dell and they thunderbolt solution. I have a Precision 5560 connected to Dell WD19 dock. 130w power and 4k60hz to my monitor. But yeah this is work laptop not gaming but im sure this solution would work on OP's Alienware as well

@fxxxit: I've seen some top out at 135w (eg Lenovo Thunderbolt3 gen2) but I would've estimated a gaming laptop like the Alienware in this post is drawing either 180w or 230w and hence it'll only be trickle charging.

              • @jace88: Yeah good point. Like I said I mostly game on desktop so just wanted to share a positive experience with the Dell TB dock but as this is an Alienware thread my point is probably moot. Hopefully we do get to a point where single cable solution is viable for gaming laptops as well

  • Wow wonder what my M1 laptop is worth while put away gathering dust? 👍😁

    • If you mean M1 as in MacBook, then it’ll probably still hold resale value.

If it’s pretty much any other gaming laptop then good luck with resale value lol.. I have learnt just to bite the bullet and accept gaming laptops even when relatively current are not going to fetch anywhere near whatever you paid.

      • Whoops M18 R1 Alienware laptop 👍😁

I do agree with post above these tend to break down dare I use the term easily,.. unless Dell has made a big improvement on there current Alienware laptops id think twice purchasing one again

    Lenovo Legion 5i Pro - Intel Core i7-11800H 16GB RAM 512 SSD RTX 3070

    16.0" WQXGA (2560x1600) IPS 500nits Anti-glare, 165Hz, 100% sRGB, Dolby Vision, HDR 400, G-Sync, DC dimmer

    $2699 with ebay plus

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234191266556

Good deal but the true OZBer will wait for the next 20% sale from Lenovo eBay store.

    • Worth to mention the the price comes down to $2681 in the lenovo edu with code "EDUCOMM" plus if for some luck the cashback tracks and approves approves (9% CR) will bring the price will come to around $2500!

    • So this is the best deal atm, agreed? If you edit a Legion 5 and add a 3070 to it then use the 10% off also come to about the same price but waiting period is 8 weeks yikes. Im so close to pulling the trigger on that ebay 5i Pro…unless a new deal pops up in the next 48hrs.

      • Try to chat with rep and negotiate a deal, some got 5800h, 3060 for a few bucks less of $2000. I tried, but only got 2300 for that configuration (Maybe better luck with edu email?)

Also, the best i got for the 5i pro with 3070, 16 gigs ram 512 gigs storage was a bit less than 2.5k. Maybe give that a go?

      • I ordered a customised L5P (3070) earlier this month. It said 8+ weeks for delivery but they changed the delivery window somehow. And It will be shipped within this month now. Well Idk if i'm just lucky or they have extra stock.

    • WOW, this is a good one… I need a similarly specced laptop for work, 3D CAD modelling, so strong in single-core performance, I guess that's a great candidate (although I need 32Gb of RAM). And I also like the colour!!! Any idea when the 20% Lenovo discount will kick in?
