Thinking of selling my 1.6m Qantas Points - Any advice?

As per topic, I've sold qantas ff points before, but mostly in small amounts. I have 1.6million points in total and I'm looking to sell them off but I'm unsure how to do this safely. I understand ppl buy and sell ff points at risk since it's technically against Qantas TOS, but I assume no one ever had an issue (yet). Any advice from anyone who has successfully bought or sold a large number of points?

Thanks

    Yes.

    • Clearly it's a no

Ask your relatives, siblings, cousins etc then sell them in a chain which doesn’t breach rules.
Or is this a sly classified?

    • +2

      Or humble brag?

    • if its classified WTS ad, i'd just go post in there like many ppl do. I'm just wondering how ppl who sold/bought large amounts have went before.

Don't really have a big family so relatives are a no unfortunately.

  • I'll take your 1.6m and add them to my 2.5m… swinging 🤦‍♂️

  • Why don't you use it to by an iphone 13 ?

You should almost have enough points for that.

    • -3

its poor use of the points. Best value for using points is RTW trips, and upgrades which is why ppl buy points.

      • -1

upgrades is the worst use of points.

        • +1

WTF? Where does this theory come from?

Nothing at all wrong with using points for upgrade, it is excellent value, but can be difficult to secure esp. on international flights where you need status to snag an upgrade over lower status holders.

WTF? Where does this theory come from?

Because they are an unnecessary, waste of points that can be used for other trips.

                @funeste:

jv has never flown business class

I have when others are paying.

I've never paid or used points for business class though. That is a waste.

                • @jv: Why do you think it is a waste?

If you compare the cost of business class airfares to the points you need to buy anything else, then it is the best value.

                  • @try2bhelpful:

Why do you think it is a waste?

                    Because it is not necessary.

You can travel to your destination using a lot less points.

                    • @jv: If it is in business class I would love to know? Economy is a PITA flying long distance. I’ve done economy and Business class and I do like business class; but I don’t want to pay for it.

                • @jv: jv had a sugar daddy once

            • +1

@jv: That does not make them bad value. You are getting a ticket value many times that of a Y ticket for a handful of points.

It's not perceived value that is in question, it is monetary value. If you want to know whether a redemption is worthwhile, you calculate the dollar value of what you are getting vs the number of points to get it.

Subjective value is worthless. Should we start ranking whether hairdryers are more valuable than toasters?

For me, if I am travelling long distance, I absolutely value getting out of a seat stuffed next to some fat dude into J well above the number of points it costs, and lounge access is great too. That said, it doesn't matter how I value it, because the intrinsic value is retail ticket cost (let's say 3 grand in J intl) minus 20% because you don't get the points and SCs for an upgrade, minus the Y ticket cost (let's say I paid $500). So $2500 - $500 = $2000 in value. If I paid 50K points for that it would be 4 cents per point. If I have to spend ~1.1c per point (in credit card fees) I am now up 2.9c per point.

That's how you derive the value. For something like a gift card or appliance. QFF points get a nominal $0.007 in value per point. If you get 2.9c from an upgrade, you are clearly taking the higher value option.

If you don't like upgrades, don't buy one. I don't need a toaster either, but it doesn't change the intrinsic value proposition.

@trotsky: I’m with you. The best usage of points is to turn them into business class tickets.

      • Upgrades are terrible use of points after toasters, Weber bbqs and gift vouchers.
RTW trips are for backpackers, and best paid in cash.

Upgrades are terrible use of points after toasters

This is only true if you're paying the base fare as well. Upgrades are good if you're travelling on company tickets.

Most companies will no longer put you in J on domestic routes unless you're an exec - when I was a frequent MEL-SYD road warrior pre-COVID, the 10,900 pts was always worth it IMO. Comfier seat, use of domestic business lounge (over Qantas Club if you're Gold or below), not to mention meal on the plane meant saving a few bucks on the ground and not having to rush around trying to find some shit takeaway to eat in the back of a cab.

            Why?
You'll still get to your destination if you don't waste your points upgrading, then you can use them for another trip.

            You can't eat in cabs…

it's technically against Qantas TOS, but I assume no one ever had an issue (yet).

Might want to do some further reading on this topic. People have definitely had their accounts shut down, points removed, etc.

So the private message to the OP goes like this

"Hi, I am happy to take all the 1.6m points off you. To make sure you are the real deal, please send me 100,000 first and I will transfer your $2,000 - my Qantas number is 1234567, last name Joyce. After that, we can transfer in 500,000 blocks, three times"
"Great, deal. I will do the transfer now"

    Transfer done.

OP comes back to OzB and starts a thread titled "Qantas closed my FF account, lost 1.6m points. Help??"

  • +1

but I assume no one ever had an issue (yet)

”Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.”

The first lot of people who gotten away with it, would have increased QF’s vigilance. Wouldn’t be hard for them to have database queries looking for suspicious transfer patterns.

Wouldn’t be surprised they monitor social media posts too…

  • +3

    Thinly veiled for sale ad

    • Bout as thin as John Candy

  • OP, plenty of people get done by QF annually for this. Search for Qantas frequent flyer suspended and see for yourself. People post how many points they have for sale and QF just look for an associated transfer, then lock both QFF accounts and demand proof that you are related.

  • Maybe not what you're after. But perhaps another option is to advertise to book the flights on their behalf? This would prob mean meeting up and sitting down together and going through the booking, and taking cash. (unless you're willing to do it remotely)

They're still risks for both sides, and as the seller it may mean you're not selling to entire block of points in one go (unless it's a big group of tickets like 8x overseas first class return tickets or something). But it does remove (or minimise) the risk that Qantas catch you selling points via direct transfer

    • I've read posts on here where initial booking was okay through Amex, and then subsequent change to flight voided the ticket, and the seller lose out. Etc.

      • You mean buyer? The seller would already have their money.

Obviously for OP, all options have their own risks (for both parties) that need to be considered

      • Wasn't that Amex travel credit
Highlights the importance of vetting the buyer

  • Anyone buying 1millon plus points is going to want account access not transfers to mitigate the risks.

Multiple large transfers from a warehousing account in a short period is garaunteed to raise attention.

Look at setting up family accounts with X amount of points and sell the whole account.

    • Thanks, great advice right here. Will look into this.

  • Qantas let you donate your points to charities.
