Super cheap 1kg rolls of PLA filament

I'd rather super good, than super cheap for filament.

por qué no los dos? Anyway, I ordered 4kg myself to give it a try.

    • well don't buy this then…

      • -1

        I didn't

        • ok. Well we don't care about your opinion of this. This is Ozbargain. Most people here are looking for super cheap. That's the point. If you'd rather something fancy, then ignore it, because none of us care.

I've tried the black and white, also have the red but haven't had a chance to try it yet. The black works without any issues, with the white sometimes parts of the first layer would rip itself up, might just need to dehydrate it, but beyond that it printed fine as well.

Decent price for what it is.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience! Good to hear about the black at least…

    • parts of the first layer would rip itself up

      and

Decent price for what it is.

      huh ?

This is the cheapest PLA that's available in Aus. I've gone through a couple of rolls of the black now and haven't had a single issue. With the one roll of white I've tried, SOMETIMES the parts of the first layer with would rip itself up, the walls and everything else prints fine without any issues.

With the black there is no question it is a bargain and earns its place on ozbargain.

With the white even despite the flaw, still a really decent price for what it is. I say this because it is awesome to use these filaments for prototyping bigger prints without feeling too bad about how much filament I'm using. Why pay almost double for the next cheapest PLA just for some random prints?

Most filament are made in china anyways, a lot of the bigger factories just relabel for different brands. Even 3dFillies filaments are made in China. So I don't really have a high horse about trying out cheap filaments and finding the best deal on one.

Welcome to how we interpret your remarks sometimes. :D

I have similar problems with white filament, regardless of the brand. I suspect the amount of titanium oxide used in white. A quick search shows many people with similar problems. Black is perfect, as well as "primary colours" like red, green, blue etc.

I have found though, before starting a print job, I let the printing bed heat up for a while longer (5+ mins) to really stabilise to 60c before starting the print. That generally tends to have better results with white on the first layer and subsequent layers.

If I kick off a print job, hit 60c on the bed and start the print straight away (less than 1 min), I'll end up with more issues on the first layer and up.

Gluesticks work wonders for first layers, cheap n nasty the gluestick the better

I personally use the Blue stick from Kmart works like a charm.

        • Oh, I don't have a problem with bed adhesion at all. It's the first layer that ends up looking like crap and causing small blobs and lines that aren't even. If I let the bed heat up and stay heated up for a while, then I don't really have issues with white.

All other colours print fine without needing to let the bed heat up fully.

A while back, I actually did use a gluestick for my cold print bed on the old 3D printer, that was a good stopgap problem solver until I got the cold bed ez-stik pads from GeckoTek. Don't need em now with the CR6SE thankfully.

        • Hair spray is the best thing I've found for bed adhesion

      • Makes sense to wait that extra while longer to allow the glass bed to heat up to the reported temperature, as the reported temp is the temp at the "base" of the bed and not the surface/glass. Good tip.

    • Yeah I also tried black and red, black worked well but I struggled to get the red to stick to glass bed.

  • Green is available too… its seems to be a nice shade of green too but no delivery to Perth!

Bought some black and red, ill give it a go.

    I have a problem (I have 45 spools i can count here)

Oh well at least I bought a voron so stand a chance of actually using them up.

    • I had the 8 rolls I ordered on a whim arrive today, 4 black and 4 red.

Started a print without any tuning of filaments and it started printing and adhered to the glass bed with PLA settings, so its definitely PLA.

The filament on the spool feels pretty rough to the touch though, I think its just shit tier filament but not so bad it cant be printed.

I had a bad experience with this stuff. I bought a roll of black PLA back in late June and it was absolute rubbish. It would constantly block my head (I don't know how that is even possible, but it did) and break at the extruder. I tried drying the filament out thinking that perhaps it was a moisture issue, but it never resolved the issue. Straight after the blockages I'd change over to other brands of filament and not have any issues. Just something to be wary of..

    • +1

I had the same with a black roll I bought off eBay. Supposed to be PLA but after constant blockages I found out it was ABS as it dissolved in acetone.
I’ll probably never use it as I’m all set up for PLA with no enclosure.

How long does a 1kg roll last for the average user? I have the Creality Ender 3 Pro on the way, and just wondering if its worth getting more than the 1kg that comes with it?

    • totally depends on what you're printing

    • +2

Welcome to the 3D club. While you wait for your delivery, here's a few steps to get help you work out how much you'll need.

First, download Cura. Creality will ship their own branded version with your printer, but it's essentially the same.
Now, visit somewhere like thingyverse and spend the next 6 weeks downloading all the things you think are cool and you want to print.

When you're ready, open one of the .stl files in Cura and thin click "slice'. When it's ready, it'll tell you an estimated time and weight of filament for the print. The time estimate can be off by a fair bit, but the weight will be pretty spot on.

To give you an idea, in August I went through 2Kgs messing about with a few things. in September I went through 6kgs working on some props and things around the house.

      • I really appreciate the detailed amount of information there! thank you!

I don't think I can ever go back from eSun PLA+… Without a doubt worth the extra $8/kg

    • I agree …trouble is at 4kg for $57 here, and $26/kg for eSun PLA+… the difference in price is almost twice the price.

  • +1

For filament, best to order a good quality. It will be noticeable when you print eg. zits and blobs. For testing purpose, probably good.

    Couldn't say no to $15/kg - bought 3. We'll see whether I regret soon

Good deal for some cheap PLA.

if you're after some SUNLU PLA+,

You can use the PHCET10 code on this listing - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282860457735?var=585392088539

White, Black, Grey, Blue & Red available

    $27.50 per kg

or buy 3 and get 1 at 25% off so $75.60 before 10% code.

After the 10%, it comes down to $68.04 so $22.68 per roll. You can mix colours too.

I have not seen proof that any of the generic brands offering “PLA+“ have the same kind of performance as eSun PLA+ — it is important to know that the term PLA+ is not a specific material composition or standard, it simply denotes a PLA polymer blended with an additive. This means it highly depends on exactly what additive and how much additive the manufacturer blends in. Personally if I’m buying PLA+ I only go for eSun, but for generic PLA I go anywhere.

      • thanks, I'll check out eSun PLA+ next time.

  • Won't post to regional NSW, including Newcastle.

    Wont post to Perth :o

I've printed some things with the black and didn't have any problems… glad I bought it! This prints so much more accurately than ABS.
I still don't know much about performance differences between different filaments..
I might have the bar set quite low hahah

    • Typically, PLA will do that for you!

  • Ordered from these guys on a previous promo. Waited… but these guys didn't even ship my order, good thing it was through ebay/paypal so I got a refund but I really needed the filament.
