[Solved] Can I Use The Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 with Another nbn ISP?

Anyone used a Telstra smart modem gen2 with another nbn provider?

Other than remove telstra sim, another other tips?

Plug and play?

Does the little black box that sits between the nbn wall point and the modem remain regardless of provider?

Considering alternative providers such as Kogan, Dodo, TPG, or iinet.

The Telstra smart modem gen 2 is plug and play with Superloop, Aussie BB, Belong, Launtel, Optus, Kogan, Vodafone. For Dodo you have to login to the Telstra smart modem gen 2 and enter your Dodo account username and password. The Telstra smart modem gen 2 is not compatible with TPG and iinet unless you know how to unlock it.

    The nbn NTD doesn't change.

      Thanks for the info 👍
      Gotta love ozB knowledge base

    • Out of interest, what's the key to knowing compatibility.?

Eg.anything on telstra optus kogan networks /backbone will work but TPG has its own backbone so therefore anything on its system won't work….?

Now seen post on her about Flip NBN.

      • By checking the ISPs protocol from this list.

The IPoE protocol is used by Telstra, Optus, Kogan and the PPPoE protocol is used by FlipTV. This means the Telstra smart modem gen 2 is compatible with all of those ISPs.

The PPPoE protocol with VLAN tags is used by TPG for nbn HFC. For most this means you have to purchase a replacement router that can do PPPoE with VLAN tags.

    • For Dodo you have to login to the Telstra smart modem gen 2 and enter your Dodo account username and password.

Correcting myself: Dodo are now using VLAN tags and you need to unlock the Telstra smart modem gen 2 or purchase a different router.

Hmm dodo working fine with smart modem Gen 2 and 3 now

        • +1

My Dodo VLAN tag post from 2021 is outdated. Your Telstra SM G2 and G3 works because Dodo have stopped using VLAN tags.

    • Hey Twix. Same issue here. I'm now using superloop, and have moved into a different property. I've just migrated my telstra modem with me. Does what you're saying mean I shouldn't have to change any settings inside the modem and it should just start working immediately? Many thanks

      • Modem settings stay the same for Superloop. The only thing you might have to do is turn the modem off and on again.

sweet. thanks so much man.got it going.

    • Do you know of Telstra smart modem works with More nbn and how to configure it?

      • +1

It does work with More Telecom. Login to the Telstra SMG2 and go to the broadband tab, connection settings, type and select PPPoE and put in your More Telecom username and password.

  • Yes for NBN data connections, but for VOIP it will not work without hacking it if you can find out how to do it. I used it at the in laws for Exetel FTTN.

    • I am currently trying to configure this modem for my partner who is on Exetel. Do you have any links or anything I can use because I can't find anything anywhere and Exetel themselves are of no help.

      • You will need to download the manual and find the section about entering the username and password that you got from exetel.

        VOIP will NOT work!!!!

  • FWIW, I used a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 (Arcadyan LH1000) in bridge mode on FTTN with Superloop and had some issues with it losing sync.

The modem would be stable for weeks then I'd have multiple dropouts over a couple of days. Superloop had applied the stability profile and I had an NBN tech visit to test the line. He ended up removing a bridge tap in the roof (for an additional phone connection). After a modem reset, it would again be stable for weeks then lose sync multiple times over a couple of days.

I ended up switching to AussieBB to check if it was a Superloop issue, and after a modem reset, it was stable for weeks then lose sync again multiple times. AussieBB support mentioned that sometimes the Telstra modems can 'phone home' for a firmware update and that could be causing the loss of sync. I ended up buying a TP-Link TD-W9970 and AussieBB removed the stability profile. I haven't had a single drop yet after a few weeks so I'm hoping it has now been resolved. 🤞

    • Thanks
I'll keep the link to the modem.

    • Hey mate, replying to a 2 year old post here :)

Do you happen to remember if your LH1000 that was losing sync had it's Telstra backup sim in it and did that sim connect up to LTE mode and get data when needed?

I'm experiencing ongoing but similar issues at home with both the Arcadyan and Technicolor variants of your modem. In my case it's not multiple dropouts, it just drops HARD and won't even attempt to sync the dsl for over a day when it happens.

      • Hey mate, IIRC it did have a SIM in it but I don’t think it ever connected as there wasn’t a live service on it.

I ended up getting drops on the TP- Link and I narrowed it down to a power connection/power board. I tried several different power boards and as weird as it sounds, I ended up connecting the TP-Link direct to a socket without a power board and the drops were no longer an issue.

We’ve moved house a couple of months ago so now have FTTP. I can post the TD-W9970 to you if you want it (just pay for postage).

        • Thanks a lot for replying. One of the Telstra modems I bought second hand still had a working backup sim in it but the other doesn’t. I’m relieved to hopefully rule out that that’s not a factor in the stable-connection-then-hard-drops scenarios I/we saw.

Thank you for the offer, the top of the TD-W9970 is interesting looking! but I don’t think I will need it. After everything I thought I had tried and ruled out, this time it looks like I just pasted the username twice, one being into the PPP credentials password field. The field immediately hides your characters and if you copy/paste it’s easier not to notice what’s actually being input. It’s pretty embarrassing that I fell for that but I’m somewhat consoling myself that I’ve had so much trouble with my internet and network in the last year or two that I’m frazzled and getting easily confused at this point.

          Thanks for listening :)

  • Hi Guys, I am with TPG what is my cheapest option with wireless AC and some gigabit ports?

  • +1

You will need to unlock it. PM me if you need a hand to do so…

    • Hi Kavie87 - I couldn't PM you because I've only just joined.
I'd love a hand with unlocking if doing so will allow me to access and change the Telephony settings of my Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 (Arcadyan LH1000).
It is working fine as a router for my new NBN (HFC) connection (new provider is Tangerine who I'm rapidly losing patience with) but does not allow me to use the VOIP.
      TIA
      Cheers

First up… LH1000 can’t be rooted. You can add PPPoE and that’s about it and install your own SIM card for data back up (if the current can’t be used) but that needs to be Telstra. See if you can grab a DJA0231 or DJA0230

        • OK thanks anyway :)

          • +1

@zenihama: They aren’t expensive. Can be found on fb marketplace

            • @kfp187: I've found a DJA0231- so would I be able to use the VOIP with that one?

              • @zenihama: Should be. You’ll need to root it though. Who are you going to VoIP with? Crazytel 100% works

                • @kfp187: https://m.facebook.com/SmartModemRoot
Message this person on Facebook. Really helpful

                  • @kfp187: Cheers for all the info. I ordered an Internet+landline package from Tangerine and they have ported my number to themselves. However the Google Nest router they provided does not have anywhere to plug in the landline. (That's a whole other story - very poor customer service)

                    • @zenihama: That's messed up… So hopefully you can get the VoIP details off Tangerine. Put them in the rooted DJA0231 and away you go. Don't forget the sim card. Data sim for if/when you lose internet and you have ab back up

        • @kavie87,

          First up… LH1000 can’t be rooted.

I decided to root my LH1000 and assumed that it is the same device as DJA0231, because those names are used interchangeably on some whirlpool threads, but proposed exploit just sits and listens and doesn't progress to the next step, so you're saying this is different device and that solution is not applicable ?

thanks in advance for any info

          • @SurprisedPanda: I’ll shoot you a PM.
            Root the DJA0231…
            Different to LH1000.

            • @kfp187: @SurprisedPanda I can’t PM. See if you can send me a PM

              • @kfp187: @kavie87
ah, was blocked in my settings, I did shoot you a test pm and ticked the option to enable pms

  • Merged from CommBank Rewards - 30% off MORE nbn - Is Telstra Gen 2 Modem Eligible with MORE nbn?

    Hi braintrust,

Thanks to previous post that clearly state out which network is eligible (Plug and Play) with Telstra Gen 2 Modem. I had gone with Superloop and it worked perfectly with Telstra Gen 2 Modem ($59.95 for the first 6 month) and my 6th month is coming and I would like to check if anyone use MORE NBN combine 30% off with CBA Rewards, and ELIGIBLE / PLUG and PLAY with Telstra Gen 2 Modem?

Thank you in advances and if you have any better ideas to save extra bucks, that would be much appreciated.
    cheers,
    Ann

    • The Telstra modem will work with other internet service providers. You will need to factory reset the modem, and then re-configure the modem to be used with More NBN — so it's not quite plug and play.

More uses what's called PPPoE authentication and you will be given a username / password combination sent to your mobile (SMS message) or email. You will need to punch in those details when you setup your Gen2 router modem.

      • Hi @scrimshaw,
Hoping you can help shed some light on a strange issue. I recently moved over from Telstra to More NBN. I kept my Telstra DJA0230 modem. When I received confirmation from More NBN that my services are active. I logged into my modem webpage and updated the username and password with the new details provided by More NBN.

However I found that even if I had entered the incorrect credentials the internet continues to work.
Very strange and hoping you might know why this is happening.

    • I have set up the same at the MinL house and so far it hasnt worked. After 2 weeks of frustration with intially 2 modems that were locked to ppoe More told me that the Tesltra modem would work (Gen2) Needs to be able to enter the password and account numbers that more uses.

Modem and NBN connection recognised the password and the modem came back saying it was accepted and connected to more. But no internet.

I have given up and moved her to Superloop (Since I havent used their 6 month deal) More support is poor. Its only 5 ½ days (Saturday ends at 6pm). I can only get to her place on weekend and not til late afternoon, so miss their support line)

I am/wont be with Tangerine, which is an associated company to more - same founders. And my internet pauses a lot. Thought it might have been browser or ozbargain, but opening other sites and browsers find the both come back as same time. Have intiated the ditching tangerine as well.
Others might be happy but I wasn't

      • Same thing happened to me with telstra gen2 modem. User name and password was accepted and showing connected to internet but other device connected to the modem is not connecting to internet.

I then restart the modem and it works fine since.
No idea why need restart at all.

        • Thanks for the info, unfortunately mine didnt do anything after restarting AND also another try resetting as well (which meant reinputting stuff again )

          cheers

  • You typically need to restart the modem when entering PPPoE to kick over the connection…

  • I’m looking at switching to TPG FTTN. On their support site, it says a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 will work with them. Would I be able to put the modem in bridge mode and then use another router or would vlan cause an issue? Mainly asking as the guide on TPG doesn’t make reference to vlan (https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/Broadband-Internet/How-to-se…)

    • You'd need to root the modem to use it with TPG. Easy enough done. But you won't be able use VoIP. Why not save the hassle and get Superloop. Save so much time and effort!

  • Hi all, alot of this is over my head so please go easy on me!
I have a Gen 3 modem but due to opticomm taking over the velocity network I have the opportunity to jump ship for free.
Looking at ABB or Origin (already have elec and gas so save $10pm).
I see from above it's an easy transition with ABB but anyone know about Origin?

    TIA

    • Faster plans will become available with the OptiComm take over. Origin is Aussie BB under the hood.

  • Never used Origin. But personally… forget the $10 and go with ABB. Especially when using opticomm/LBN. Aussie are great to deal with, quick pick up typically and are local call centres.

  • Any chance of using this as a stand alone mobile broadband device, with a telstra pre-paid sim?

    • To those from the future, this works.

  • Hi all

I'm trying to get my Aussie VOIP to work with the Telstra Smart 2 modem. Anyone have a step by step guide that can help me out??

    Thanks alot
    Homr

    • Need to root the modem.

  • Will it work with More broadband?
Thinking of changing to more broadband with 30% CommBank offer

    Cheers

    • Yes it will. You’ll need to enter the sign in details into the PPPoE internet page in the modem.

      • Thank you
I got mine activated within 4hrs
Just unchanged to uni d but nothing else and everything works.

        Plug and play

          It’s good isn’t it :)

        • Hi @curryblender and @kavie87
Hoping you can help shed some light on a strange issue. I recently moved over from Telstra to More NBN. I kept my Telstra DJA0230 modem. Very strange and hoping you might know why this is happening.

          • @echy888: I’m not an expert on PPPoE. But have heard this happening. For example people moving from Exetel to More and they didn’t even change the credentials.
Possibly the credentials don’t matter so much if you’ve previously had internet at your address. But say it’s a new connection it would because the details would link the RSP to the address of the gateway.
I could be totally wrong and someone with greater networking skills will say otherwise.

          • @echy888: Hi echy888,
Yeah it's strange. Infact I have changed from more to superloop as the device wasn't stable and after a week the speed wouldn't hit kore than 2mbps.

When I siwtched to superloop I didn't change the username or password and it still works.

  • Ported from Telstra (Using the Gen 2 Modem) to DODO without any issues, whole process happened in a matter of minutes.
Just had to update the username and password provided by dodo within the Gen 2 modem portal.

  • Can anyone confirm if it’s compatible with Leaptel?TIA

    • Confirmed. Login to the Telstra SMG2 and go to the broadband tab, connection settings, type and select IPoE.

      • +1

        Thanks mate

  • Am currently with Mate 100/20 on FTTN and thinking of moving to Leaptel or Superloop hopefully to get what I am paying for. Download speeds are around the 50mbps mark and except for 5am (where I get 90mbps) it doesn't move far from it. I don't want the FTTP upgrade as I have heard there is not that much improvement and the NBN box location inside the house would not suit. Am I going to see a worthwhile improvement by moving? Thanks for any advice.

  • Telechoice NBN uses PPPoE with VLAN tags. From reading above it sounds like Telstra Smart Moden 2 needs to be unlocked if ISP is using these setting ? Unlocking looks tricky to me .

  • It’s not really tricky if you use one of the installer packages; doing it manually can be tricky; I did it earlier to use a different SIM; if it’s not rooted Telstra will lock it .

  • Can anyone confirm if the Telstra Technicolor Gen 2 modem is compatible with Southern Phone or Swoop?
    Thanks

    • Telstra SMG2 is compatible with both ISPs. Swoop is fine. Stay away from Southern Phone.

For those interested, I got iiNet on Opticomm FTTP setup and working with a Telstra SMG2 LH1000 not rooted. Just required the PPP credentials, DNS provider flicked over to Cloudflare and the WAN Supervision changed to off given the SIM was removed.

  • I moved from Telstra to More NBN through the Commbank deal on the samrt modem gen 3. The experience was perfect and I was able to get it up and running in ~4 hrs. the configuration was literally just changing the PPPoE username and password and that's it. I did raise an issue with them about speed issues but got that resolved in under an hour too.
TLDR can confirm telstra modem gen 3 works with more NBN

    • It works with all NBN.

  • @bokz I'm with iiNet and was previously with Telstra Velocity which has become Opticomm (hasn't it?) and have the same device (Arcadyan LH1000 with Firmware 0.19.07r) as you but I have all sorts of issues using the on premises NTD . I've had to take the NTD out of the loop and connect straight through the phone line which I'm sure completely negates the value of FTTP. Any chance you can elaborate on your setup? Or anyone else clueyer than me that cares to comment..
