Watch for Wife

So anniversary is coming.
Looking for suggestions/recommendations for a watch around $1000-$3000.
Wife has a small wrist so probably nothing over 35mm.
If possible brands like Longines / Tudor etc.

Open to suggestions / recommendations.

  • For daily wear or special occasions? Also are you going brand new or open to used..

I'll start it off with an Omega De Ville (and to take it overseas to claim back GST at airport if time constraints permit)

    • Yeah but if the watch is over $900 he's gotta pay the GST back upon his return

  • decide automatic or quartz.

I quite like the look of the Rado Captain Cook. I think the look will suit a small wrist as well.

That being said, I’d consider a smart watch as well. Amongst my colleagues, outside of those who wear luxury watches, pretty much everyone wears a smart watch these days. It’s as if the old market for mid-market watches is just completely dead.

    • I do agree that say an Apple watch with a nice metal band is very popular with females. I would find having to charge it all the time and wonder whether you actually use the features alot. A luxury watch that just tells the time and maybe day date on a womans wrist to me just look like glass as says alot about the person's style and taste

    Oris at that price point.

You can send the money to me, for only $1000 I can watch your wife for you on your anniversary.

A $2 watch from Kmart will do.

You should drill down on specifics as to what she may like. Can you take her past a jewelry shop to window shop and randomly ask if she likes a particular style. Is she a gold or silver lover. My wife bought herself a Longines ages ago she loves it. Very light. Something like this in gold.
    https://www.longines.com/en-au/watch-la-grande-classique-de-…

I bought her a Michael Kors as a gift from my hol in States https://www.longines.com/en-au/watch-la-grande-classique-de-…

I would go Longines if getting a watch. It's classic, light, and looks stylish. The Kors alot cheaper and chunky and probably will date more. You could also go into a jewelry shop and get help from sales assistant

Does your partner even wear a watch?

Id go Pandora gold charm bracelet with a few charms and your set for future birthdays and special occasions as you can add charms. She can also set up in Pandora app a wish list. Just get her access so you can see her list

    $1000-$3000

The only watch-ing I would do is out the door.

Even the avid - Apple watch is expensive crowd would be shuddering.

In my case Mrs RR would have me committed, as rightly so its half her money I am wasting.

You do realise that real watches existed prior to digital watches? High-end brands such as Omega, IWC, Oris, Audemars Piguet, Rado, Panerai exist even today and have long existed even before digital watches were invented. There are some of us who still like wearing a real watch. Agree with half the money belonging to the missus, but disagree it is a waste. These watches carry a lot of value.

"This is Ozbargain not Love Shack." You can still be on a high income and want a bargain. Ppl waste their money on allot of crap on this site. If you get a good watch and like wearing a watch it will last a long time. Some expensive watches even go up if you choose the right brand and model. I have a watch that has doubled in value since I bought it and I bought it secondhand as well.

I'm definitely not the target market for a $3k watch, but this is very correct. People here buy cheap Chinese crap that they have to replace every six months, and think anything expensive (even if it lasts forever), is not a bargain.

My suggestion is you get her to decide what she wants. It is less romantic but she is the one who will be wearing it. She, also, might to spend the money on something different to a watch.

    • I wholeheartedly agree on this. For such an expense, you’d hate to get it wrong.

You could surprise her by taking her out and not letting her know where she is going. Even blindfolding her until you rock up to a watch shop or something. But I think she needs to weigh in on the decision.

Cartier Tank or Tudor Royal in that price bracket.

    • Tank for $3k? Not sure about that (not new anyways) mate…

      • Considering OP wants less than 35mm the small quartz tank will come very close to that with a discount (RRP $3,800).

I was offered 15% off a Tank at Kennedy's a while back without even pressing the salesperson.

Tudor Royal in 34mm is $3,000 RRP.

        • Thats fair - i was thinking of a standard tank without discount. but fair.

          • @mickyb80: Yeah i figure if I OP going to buy a Tank, may as well settle on Quartz because without the seconds hand it's practically identical

            • @Pelicannn: I'd just not buy the Tank.
Was ordering an Oyster for the Ex (just before we split). But then again, I'm clearly a watch (profanity)!
Personally anti- Rolly… Wanted her to like the piece that she wanted though… Oh well…

  • Ask @WatchNerd.

I don't know where to find bargains with these brands or in this price range so I would only be commenting on personal taste which isn't much use.

  • Cartier

    edit: nevermind, they're a rip

If OP works for Toll, he may get a free Cartier watch as a gift from Christine Holgate

      • Doubt it. Toll Express profits have shareholders unless Australia Post.

Shareholders of a company that size are usually more vicious than the old pub test.

Nomos. Clean, elegant, matches your price range and size.

  • Is she also an Ozbargainer? If so, xiaomi!

  • Could look into Grand Seiko Quartz. Around $3k if you purchase via Wamada.

  • what if she does not like it if i were you i would give her $3000 trust me you will get more reward in return. …

  • I guess if $3K puts an end to a wife asking "What time do you think it is?" when you walk in late from the Pub, it is money well spent.

  • Watch for Wife

Sounds like a deal for those who grabbed this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/656022

  • Nomos Metro, Orion or Tangent.

    https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/watchfinder-377?o=9&f=147 Love them.

  • I subscribe to ask the wife what she wants to avoid an expensive mistake. http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/brands.shtml this is very subjective but you can use it as a starter.

Have a look at https://www.chrono24.com/search/index.htm?currencyId=USD&dos… to see what's available for ladies, 700- 2250USD, and ask her what she fancies. Try to see it in the flesh and look for images/reviews. Forum reviews are good because you can ask the member further questions. Buy used for a lot better value.

Once you've decided on a model you can then ask where to buy it. Again, the forums come in useful. Good one to join is https://www.watchuseek.com/. Even with the GST it pays to buy from abroad a lot of the time.

  • Longines make some nice Ladies Automatics, Swiss made with a great heritage.

  • I'm very disappointed. I opened this thread expecting to be able to exchange my wife for a watch!

    • +2

      PM me ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Have you checked what she wants? I appreciate that a surprise is nice but that's a decent amount of money you're shelling out if you don't know what she wants?

  • if automatic only used for special occasions, would there be any issues if it just sits in the drawer somewhere without being wound for long time?

    • No issues whatsoever

  • Tudor, Longines, Oris. In that price range, they are about the 3 best options you are going to find.

Give Wamada a call in Sydney and ask to speak with Vincent for the Oris.
For the other two - call Swiss Concepts in Sydney and ask to speak with Stella.

If you can double your budget, it will open up a lot of other options…

  • thanks for the awesome information ozbargainers
She already has Longines, not keen on smart watches.
Maybe Tudor Royal or Cartier Tank….

    Still open to suggestions though
