The Pixel 2 XL

The phone will not receive the Android 12 Update, as it has come to its end of life cycle.

For those willing to tweak, you can unlock the bootloader, use a custom ROM from XDA that you like, pair it with Sultan Kernel (To both increase performance and get much better battery life).

I personally use the PixelDust ROM + Sultan Kernal and I see 5+ hours of screen on time regularly (that's almost 3 years after owning the device) with no games being played obviously. So just for regular use of browsing and different social media platforms, occasionally taking pictures and editing them too.

You got a link to a brand new S8 or S9 for this price? Plus, preferably (to match the 'XL').

          i meant brand new

          • -1

            @eloque: Oops, misread.

On the other hand, they didn't specify the condition.

            • @silverrat23: You may have a point. I assumed the Google one was brand new and apparently it is but I found this bit in the description:
              "Product description
Got from Google store one week ago, never use, just open the plastic, With two years insurance to 2011, cover everything by replace an new phone if you have damages. See the policy at mydeviceprotection.com"

So there are 4 of these left in stock and this guy has removed the plastic from all of them? What on earth for?

Or perhaps he got them cheap because they all had the plastic removed. Kinda like factory seconds: marked box.

The insurance 'to 2011' is a bit weird and also the disclaimer implying that there maybe damages. I was close to pulling the trigger on this otherwise. For the old lady who wouldn't notice its vintage.

          • @eloque: Also, the 'excellent' condition version is $30 extra

        • I switched from Google pixel xl og to Samsung s10e and have really disliked the experience almost the whole time I've had it.

The built in ssung apps are trash and you can't uninstall them without rooting.

      • This won't be "brand new" either. You generally can't buy a brand new 4 year old phone.

  • How would this compare to a mint condition second hand (not refurbished) iPhone 7 Plus?

    • No comparison, the Pixel 2 XL is much better than the iPhone 7 and 8 in terms of performance, camera quality, app smoothness, etc.

But if you don't care about either of those two factors, and you're more interested in just simple use cases (phone and messaging), stability and security, then the iPhone 7 Plus would be better. But a used iPhone 7 Plus that's many years old is going to have a horrible battery life, even if the rest of the phone is in mint condition.

      • Thanks for the response. Camera is not important. If it has better app smoothness it must be pretty amazing because can't really fault the iPhone 7 plus for performance and smoothness. Those two are important. Also the feel of the 7 Plus is amazing. Nice and weighty - you can really feel the quality. Not sure how cheap this would feel in comparison. Stability and Security are also very important. The person it is for is also familiar with the iPhone system so the trade-off lies around new Android vs used iOS and the former probably needing to feel like a quality item and worthy competitor.

As a Google phone diehard, I'd get your friend the iPhone because they're so used to the system.

Otherwise, the pixel 2xl is a capable phone, but it it's fairly light and plastic. Imo, it's closer to LG and Samsung phones' build quality for that era.

          • @ankor: I'm intrigued by the pixels myself, especially because of their following - people who you'd think would never trust a phone by Google. I would also consider getting a de-Googled one from Rob Brax (iirc 4 and later).

I have seen used iphone 8 phones for around 200 in good condition with 90% battery health, that would probably outperform this but obviously wont be brand new which a lot of people prefer

        • Yeah brand new is ideal but some people really take care of their phones and you can tell. The phone spends its life in a rugged case the size of a briefcase, you get a full history about how their wives used it for one year and then their daughter and it wasn't allowed to be taken out of the otterbox or whatever plus they provide very detailed photos and you can tell the dude is a perfectionist and careful with his stuff etc. This is on ebay btw. For a while I was watching the prices and there are some bargains to be had. Just so happened that some emergency popped up at home every time I was guaranteed to win and I just haven't bothered since. Interestingly there's quite a big jump in price from the standard sized models and the Plus ones. Having owned the Plus it would be hard to step down so it's understandable. The real bargains are when the 256Gb ones go for only a few bucks more that the lower capacity ones. Because the 7 Plus and 8 Plus are about the same size I did check out the latter but there weren't as many bargains and they tended to be in relatively bad condition when at a similar price but according to some reviews it's worth paying a bit more for it. I just can't imagine what the glass on both sides would be like. Doesn't really sit well with me.

Is anyone able to interpret the Product Description?

I'm still using my 2 XL. Custom rom with Magisk working great. I want the Pixel 6 Pro but i'm happy to wait a little bit.
Camera on here is amazing to be honest.

Pixel 6 Pro is curved display, that's its only and biggest problem for me (which sadly I might still get, since it will be the best Android phone in terms of longevity). I hate that trend, it was such a stupid trend that most Android manufacturers jumped on and you can't find a decent phone these days without having some sort of curve on the display. If it wasn't for the crazy prices that Apple demands, I was willing to give up on Android entirely (even though I love it) because of the moronic curved display trend.

      • I didn't think much of the curve on my S20, but when I got the S21 I realised the curved display on the S20 made it feel a lot nicer to hold in my hand.

    Camera is brilliant

Still using my Pixel 2XL. Without question the best phone I've ever had. Will be sad when I have to upgrade.

  • Only if google offered free storage saver backup with Pixel 6, otherwise i am still stuck with my Pixel 2 xl, because of it.

Looks like back in stock @$230

    • Thanks, flagged it as back and changed price in the title.

  • For extra $20, you can get the 128GB version from Mobileciti
