"not open to the public"? So…. are they going to check ID's?

Don't like the use of the term "store cost", which could include any cost they consider associated with stocking the product. I would not have high expectations of this sale.

    • 'Store cost' means how much it costs for them to design, manufacture, support, tax and make profit from :P

The TV doesn't sound like a bad price as cheapest I can find it elsewhere is $1120. That said I don't know why you'd buy a Bravia when Samsung/Pana are so much better (in quality and bang for buck).

      • Samsung: bang for buck yes, quality no.

      • Personally I would still choose a large panasonic plasma over the other offerings.

I FYI I used to work at a Sony Centre. These sales can be ok but they are mostly to create hype and make people buy things and to make them think they are getting an exclusive deal. I used to be on the other end convincing people that it was the best deal they could get blah blah. BTW they are 'not open to the pubic' but no RSVP is required so anyone can turn up.. more hype. Just make sure u have done your homework if you intend to go.

Also this is Video Pro with a Sony blanket over the top, not that that matters tho all SC are franchised.

Sounds like the same recipe as most shops nowadays, e.g. JB Hifi and Harvey Norman. All about getting people to think something special is happening, whereas prices are as per normal.
Pity the Australian government doesn't enforce shops to be true to their word, e.g. genuinely force them to sell at cost price+$1.

      • It'd never happen. Determining cost price is effectively impossible. Especially when cost price can include overheads like staff costs, GST etc.

        • There definitely is a 'Floor Cost' on top of everything. Saying that you cant expect a business to run on nothing, they need to pay their staff who are people just like everyone here on OzB. I do agree tho that the term 'Cost + $1' is somewhat misleading.

  • I'm after the Bravia HX series, they are the best TVs you can find, wondering if they have this on special as well. I might check out the Alpha 77 while I'm there.

I diasagree about best tv's, but It's all about personal preference really. Personally I have a Samsung 59d6900 and I find it very difficult to fault it at all, I've had Sony tv's aswell and although they were good quality they were nothing special but with a big markup.

In my opinion in terms of quality (not bang for buck) Panasonic>Samsung>Sony
      But bang for buck Samsung>Panasonic>Sony

As long as the Bang isn't the Samsung power supply capacitors again :-)

      • My Samsung died after 1.5 years.

        • If it's just the power supply capacitors, it's worth fixing. I fixed my parents' Samsung LCD about 15 months ago with about $5.50 worth of parts from Dick Smith, and a bit of information from an internet search.

    • Truly is for LCD, it's the only brand to not rip you off with edge LED and give you a choice for full-array LED. Yes there is LG full-array…well read the reviews and you'll know why you shouldn't bother for comparisons sake.

    • As much as I like Sony products , I am pissed at them not standing behind their LCD products and the like where now they only offer 12 months standard warranty. So you have always to factor in an extended warranty in their pricing. LG still offers 3 years standard warranty.

      • word is that LG new range of tvs has 1 year warranty…..

      • -1

No TV manufacturers now offers 3 years warranty besides from LG because they are quite bad quality. They are standard 12 months across the board.

As for comparison between Sony and Sumsung LED TVs, they are about the same prices. I hope people are not comparing plasma with LED here because LED are alot more expensive.

  • Did anyone go to the recent Brisbane VIP event?

    • +1

I overheard a guy on the bus mention (not creepy at all) that he received an invite to the same sale in Brisbane on Wednesday at 5:30 PM. Will probably go check it out.

Has anyone received and invite for the Brisbane Event with details of items on offer. If so please put it so we can do a bit of research.

  • The BDVE880 is cheap. bigbrownbox has them for 455. JB hifi 500+.

Gonna head there to see how much I can get the TX10 waterproof camera for.

  • A quick check of the NX720 has everyone at $1100+, so it seems reasonable.
Really interested in this "store cost + $1" concept, i'll come armed with best negotiated price on the EX720 and EX520…it had better be significantly lower than that or i'll call shenanigans.

      "….. or i'll call shenanigans"

Is that some sort of recently opened Irish A/V retailer?

      • Clap, clap, clap…even though you're taking the piss, I didn't see that coming - +'ve

  • Not that it matters now but in case the event comes up again the deals were reasonable but not outstanding:

E.g. KDL46HX820 $1508, but you can get it from videopro for $1491.60 with free shipping.

Oh, & it didn't look like everything was on sale, just selected items.
