Since nearly every OzBargainer now owns a Kindle after the latest clearance deals, I spotted a (rare) decent book in the Daily Deals, which is usually peppered with unknown authors and bad romance novels.

Only available today, it's The Martian by Andy Weir.

The paperback will set you back $17.70, so $4.99 for this quality read seems like a deal.

It's yours to keep for as long as Jeff Bezos rules the universe (or moves to Mars).

    Great book.

I've read this book a few times, and I rarely re-read books.
    Love it.

    • I plan to re-read it, but haven't gotten around to it. The book is so much better than the movie and the movie is pretty good. I actually picked up a second copy to gift, but haven't yet gifted it, it was under $10, I think, at K-Mart, some time ago.

One benefit of buying this Kindle ebook is you can get the Audiobook version for $4.49 at https://www.audible.com.au/pd/The-Martian-Audiobook/B082BFJH…. The best audiobook I have ever listened to. Highly recommended if you haven't had it.

I love this cross-buy promotion between Audible and Kindle. I actually didn't subscribe to Audible anymore after finding out that sometimes the cost to buy the Kindle ebook + the Audiobook is less than the 1-credit subscription monthly cost.

    • Interesting, audible is crazy exxy, I don't use it much at all, this is a great tip!

price of a meal, a succulent meal, last longer too

    • +1

Good tip! So do you only know the reduced Audible price once you've purchased the Kindle book?

      • +1

Nope, you actually can browse around Audible and see "get this for the reduced price of $X.XX if you own the kindle version first".

        Other examples:

Artemis (also from the same author, not as great) audiobook is $4.49 after buying the ebook: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Artemis-Audiobook/B071K9FNK8?p…

World War Z audiobook is $2.99 after buying the ebook: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/World-War-Z-Audiobook/B00FF004…

I always check this before spending my credit / subscribing. It's cheaper and you get both the audio version and ebook version (you can read + listen to at the same time and they sync up your progress)

        • World War Z on Audiobook is amazing! Highly recommended

          • +1

@Jono258: I've only listened to two audiobooks - World War Z and The Martian. Both were very enjoyable.

Hijacking your comment to talk about one of my favourite audiobooks - Project Hail Mary, written by Andy Weir too. The voice acting was really well done in my opinion and I really really really enjoyed the story, I'm looking forward to listening again. While I haven't listened (or read) The Martian, it's on my list.

      • Yep had the audiobook and the ebook, great book if you liked the Martian. Found myself thinking I was missing out when I read a chapter rather than listened.

      • Personally, I loved it all except the ending

        • +1

          Was it the Me burger?

          • @Littlevu: It came a bit abruptly though you could tell if checking the page numbers. It wasn't the fairy tale happy ending but I was still satisfied.

            • @Caped Baldy: I didn't think it was abrupt, I just thought the actions of the main character at the end were … I dunno … unsatisfyingly virtuous. He makes a decision and it's meant to be virtuous and self-sacrificing, and I just felt it was dumb.

              • @DeepDreamer: Same, loved the book but the ending was bit underwhelming, bit abrupt. My imagination is that the lead is just walking around in dark eating me burgers with zero privacy from natives.

Great book. Artemis was more miss than hit for me. Thoroughly enjoyed Project Hail Mary.

Andy Weir has given some fantastic talks on writing The Martian. My favourite is his interview with Adam Savage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SemyzKgaUU

    • +1

How did I miss this! I love the book AND Adam Savage.

      • Me too! I must've watched this interview at least 10 times already. Enjoy! :3

  • I thought it was the movie

  • +1

This book was as good as his second one was bad. Loved it.

    • +3

Project Hail Mary is up there with The Martian.

      • The second one is Artemis.

Project Hail Mary is the third book.

Artemis does stand as a bad one, comparing to The Martian and Project Hail Mary.

    Killer face

  • Not seeing this available as ebook. Is it sold out or am I doing something wrong?

    • Shows up fine for me. Maybe try a different browser or device.

  • +1

Fanatstic book, really really good. Better than the movie. I listened to the audiobook.

You know you can just watch the movie, right?
