This deal is for the top 1% of the top 1%.

No, that would be the Black Centurion Card.

      Any Mr. Robot fans here?

    $1,450 annual fee. Wow.

Also can't find anything about the 300,000 points

    • This is what I'm seeing on the page. Unless the offer is somehow targeted.

  • +1

Apart from being super exclusive and metal (wow much cool) there doesn’t really seem to be a whole lot of value in this card these days for an annual fee that steep. This would go great with a high yield investment vehicle.

    • +2

To each their own, definitely not for everyone. Some might find the benefits still worthwhile. Yes, you'd be silly to consider this card without already having an $80k high yield investment vehicle 😝

Between amex credits, the included travel credit and accor plus membership I've made back more than $1450 in value from the card already. Combine it with the Platinum Edge to earn 3ppd at supermarkets and petrol stations, I've stopped needing a visa/mc and just stock up on Only1/EFTPOS Perfect Giftcard/Coles MC and various giftcards and 90% of my spend now earns 3ppd with the ability to convert to QF at my choosing.

        • 1) Yes
          2) I stock up when they're on sale so either the purchase fee is offset by the sale (regular Coles MC sales) or reduced to something negligible (Woolies Only1 where it's effectively $1.95 a card). Even with the fees the amount of cards I go through won't add up to the annual fee of a half decent Visa/MC.

    • What, those discount BMWs?

  • Interesitng this one would claim that it takes 8-10 weeks for the points to hit by the 240,000 explorer people have said they got the points almost immeditately.

    • That may very well also be the case for this Platinum seeing how the Explorer bonus Points T&C also states 8-10 weeks.

    • Amex is usually really quick to credit the points. The 8-10 weeks is probably a requirement by legal to protect themselves in the event their system goes apeshit.

I've had this card for years, and even after the first years bonus points, and even with the current covid times - I've covered the fee every year and some with benefits

    Its not for everyone though

That said if I didn't already have one, I'd definitely sign up for the first year for the 300,000 points and other benefits

    • Quite a number of decent benefits if you can make use of it!

  • +2

    Haha charge card

Tried using it to pay for a car one day, Told them I was paying with an Amex as I wanted the points and they agreed not to charge the 3%, went to the dealer and was keen to see a large sum coming out and the sweet points I was going to get

    "declined - contact bank"

    Phone rang

"Hi Sir, we've just received a request on your card to pay for "$xxx, xxx" is this correct"

    "Yep"

"You need to tell us first"

    "Oh didn't realise"

"Try again now - I'll stay on the line"

Tried again and got accepted. gotta say the concierge is very good but don't be swayed by a "charge card" the internal limit I believe is still around $40k before they hit the brakes.

    • +3

Charge refers to the need to repay within the next statement period, instead of a credit limit payable in instalments. It doesn't guarantee immediate processing of purchases without discussion or bypassing standard security checks, but as you saw was still done very quickly. Otherwise a thief could say order 500k in gold or something online without checking.

    • +6

Being limited to only $40k per transaction on a credit card would definitely be a problem for me. Thanks for the heads up.

      • +3

This will severely limit my ability to get a high yield investment car.

      • +1

how else would I buy over $40k worth of crypto and then flee the country?

        • 40? so like half a bitcoin?

    • They have an online tool to check if they’re likely to approve an amount at the eftpos terminal. No credit check/black marks for checking any amount. If the result is no it tells you to call them to advise before attempting.

I believe is still around $40k before they hit the brakes.

For me it was around $75k. I cancelled my card because of limited value during covid though so policy and thresholds might have changed since

      • I've had more value out of the card during covid lol
They've put on lots of spend credits to make up for the lack of use of some of the major perks.

    • +1

The limit on each transaction varies depending on the cardholder's history with Amex. I've had my limit vary over the years both above and below $40k.

    • +1

This is not true for the internal limit to be around 40k. It all depends upon your salary and how you have good report with Amex. I started with 25k ..then 50k and now I have transaction at 100k on my charge card. For the increase I put big spend and paid it off on time …they usually test the waters for 3 months

Don’t forget you also get an AFR subscription worth about $700 pa.

    • Sadly no more. Replaced with an awful The Australian subscription

      • +1

        Well that sucks..

  • I currently have a platinum edge Amex card but never before a charge card, am I excluded from this offer? Not able to make out who eligible applicants are.

    • Yes you are excluded from the offer I'm afraid.
