Saw this in the latest Supercheap Auto catalogue, pretty good deal for bendix brakes. The generic brands are usually more expensive than this.

  • Nice, might have to pick up a set. The price seems pretty good as well - before the BOGOF.

  • If my car brakes are squeeling whenever I apply pressure to them, do I need new brake pads?

    OzCarAdvice :)

    • Possibly. Ring around to brake centres that do free inspections and they'll tell you how many % is left in your pads.

    • Ideally the pad's wear down to metal wear indicators that produce the squeeling sound. After that and if not replaced brakes will make a bad grinding sound when stopping which is when it starts to cause damage… Also it can be just noisy pads which require brake squeal spray, thats normally if you have cheap pads. See if you can stick your head under the car and see how much meat is on the brakes..

      • What exactly am I looking for?

    • Maybe, maybe not…

Some brake pads have a metal piece on them that once they wear down to a certain point will scratch on the rotor and cause that squeel (It's used to indicate that you have worn out your brakes)

Although sometimes, your brakes will simply heat up and glaze over, causing that squeel as well. This can be fixed simply by removing the pads and rubbing them on some concrete to rough them up before re-inserting them.

      • All brake pads have a wear indicator which is what causes the squeal when braking.

If you have a bit of a squeal with plenty of mean it either means you need to machine/skim your disc, apply anti-squeal, pads installed the wrong way (some are directional), shim plates missing or installed the wrong way.

Rubbing the pads on concrete to rough them up is a temp fix only and most of the time the sound comes back.

Bendix pads are pretty good, i used to use the ultimates on my rear pistons with ds3000s on the front for some track use.

        • NOT all brake pads have a wear indicator, although most do.

Brake squeal (as distinct from wear indicator scraping) is an acoustic resonance issue. Basically, if the pad and rotor have matching resonant frequencies, they'll vibrate together and cause noise. It doesn't affect the brake performance, but it's damn annoying.

Just about anything you do to a brake pad will affect its tendency to produce noise. Not always in a good way, and not always in a way that will last. Rubbing and scrubbing won't last. Spraying magic stuff on the rotors won't last. It's really up to the manufacturer to tune the resonant frequencies to avoid producing squeal in the first place… and the fitter to install the pads properly.

Bendix Ultimate are quite a different animal to Ultra Premium. One is the somewhat noisy, rather dusty high performance pad you'd stick on your track car (or high-po road car). The other is the clean, quiet, moderate performance pad you'd stick on your wife's car. Both better than most comparable options on the market, in my (very biased ;-) ) opinion.

      • Thanks for the replies guys, would it be a hard job to replace brake pads for someone who does not know much about cars?

I'm good at following Internet tutes, which is how I have put together electronics.

EDIT: Nevermind, it looks like a big job. I'll just buy the brake pads and get a professional to install them. Shouldn't cost too much.

  • Nice deal - not something to skimp on. Most cars are easier to change pads on than you'd think. Great internet tuts on youtube etc.

  • FFFFUUUUUUU…

I just bought $130 Ultimate pads YESTERDAY from my local guy… FML! problem is, I go through a set every 100,000kms+ (still on factory ones @ 120,000kms, and no squeel - just getting my rotors machined, and clutch replaced so getting brakes done as well)… so my car will probably die before I need to change mine again! Otherwise I'd be buying these for sure!

    • Ultra Premium are quite unlike Ultimate… in nature even more than in price.

      • Yes, these 'Ultra Premium' range of Bendix that SCA carries seem like an exclusive range to them? I'm thinking they're just the 'General CT' range thats been rebadged. I bought some 6mths back and they've the exact same product profile/design as the General CT's.

Nothing about them at all on the Bendix site. Thats quite a poor practice IMHO, they've got a good product and no reason to be deceptive doing stuff like that.

Could be Ultimates with a bit less pad so you're back to buy another set sooner?

  • edited…nvm

Do they have VE pads on the shelf yet? Tired of paying double the price from the parts counter.

    • Bendix had VE pads before dealers had VE cars.
If your parts shop doesn't have them on the shelf, find one that does.

      • It's more an issue of pricing than availability. On-the-shelf pricing is significantly better than out-the-back pricing.

    • No they don't last time I checked :( which is a little strange seeing as they are very common cars now you would think they would stock them :s

      • Yep, basically the biggest selling model of car for the past 5 years

  • Are you able to buy front pads and get the rear ones?

    • yeap.

Great deal, well done. Anyone know when this one expires?

    • Sale ends 5th April, but its just til stocks last I think. I picked up the last set for VY commodore at my local store yesterday.

  • Got quoted $165 for the brake pads from my mechanic, not including installation. Same brand too.

You don't have to buy two identical boxes of brake pads. I went into my local SCA and was only able to find one pair of brakes for the front of my WRX. Was told that I can mix and match as long as its another Bendix pad. So I bought an extra pair for my brothers Falcon. Another idea is to buy fronts as well as the rear pads for your own car.

Adding to that, if your local store doesn't have any of the type for your car you can just buy any 2 and bring them back and replace them later on when they get more stock in.

Was told this by someone who works there.
