That's a steal. Have had one of these for 3 years and it hasn't missed a beat.

Does it come with the EM480 grinder?

  • Also have had one of these for around 3 years. Works great - paid around $550 from DJs.

Originally paired with a EM0450 grinder but upgraded to the Breville Smart Grinder. Make sure you use freshly roasted beans for the best results!

    • where'd you get your smart grinder? my em0480 is on the finest setting and makes a hell of a mess. i have the shim from sunbeam to add to it to fix the setting issue (when i get around to putting it in), and the rubber spout that helps a bit with the mess, but it's still messy.

I sit a wide funnel on top of my group handle to catch the spray of grounds coming out of my EM0480.

It's a dodgy home-made hack, made by cutting the bottom out of a single-serve microwave self saucing pudding cup :-P

With the funnel/cup, I don't need to use the rubber spout, which results in less coffee grounds getting caught up in the machine to go stale between sessions.

The grounds spray out of the chute, into my funnel, and fall into the group basket. Funnel out, tamp, lock load and pour. Yum.

I've not had to do the shim mod, but different beans make a big difference to the grind setting required. Fresh roasted beans from my local roaster I grind at about #10. Stale old supermarket beans need #2 or #3 to build enough pressure for a correct 20 second pour. You might be able to get a bit more adjustability by using fresher beans (and/or by installing the shim).

Good price for an awesome machine.

      • My em0480 made an awful mess before, until I got a Krupps espresso machine with a bigger grouphead.
It is deep enough to hold enough loose grounds for a double shot.

  • Excellent machine, love mine to bits! Fresh beans and grinder for the win!

  • Any reason to upgrade from a ~$300 model?

    • My question also.

    • frothing the milk while the coffee is coming out, so neither is sitting around cooling waiting for the other. unless your $300 one does that, i don't know?

biggest advantage of this model is the twin thermoblocks, which salem already stated, allows you to steam and brew at the same time.

there are some inherent flaws of the thermoblock design, but at this price point, this is one of the best machines available (still the case when not on special) and it will consistently make fantastic coffee with fresh beans and a good grinder

next step up would be the Breville dual boiler or an HX machine, both which cost significantly more

    • Hell yeah. It's a great machine full price but this is much cheaper.

  • i want my wish gift cards already

  • For those interested in combining with a grinder purchase, same model is $605 delivered with a 'bonus' EM0480 Grinder grinder worth approx $150 from powerbuys.com.au (Retrivision franchisee)

  • There was a better deal a few weeks ago from Good Guys

$599 with 0408 grinder and $50 gift card.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65082

I think you can still get the $599 deal.

This machine is useless without a decent grinder.

    • I got the 480 grinder for $78 from a deal on here last year so it'd only be $20-something off this.

      • That was the 450, different to the 480 only in terms of finish/materials, but different nonetheless. Just sayin.

on a side note - looking at other machines like this and I found this earlier thread http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/64534.

This is a lower model (Sunbeam EM5900), not quite in the same league but some say it's like the 6910 but with a single thermoblock. The price I just found on BigW is $188 - lower than the original thread's deal. BigW page at http://www.bigw.com.au/home-garden/small-appliances/coffee-m…

May be of interest to some.

    • The EM5900 for $188 is a bargain actually! Needs a post of its own.

However, the portafilter is slightly smaller than the EM6910 (which is commercial size).

I dropped by the Sunbeam factory outlet and they were selling the EM6910 for $599. ouch.

      • I'd have gone the 6910 if they had the deal that they had in January ($540 for that and the EM480, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61081) but to be honest I really didn't need another grinder as I picked up one of those Breville 800's late last year (another OzB special!). The portafilter (that's the basket?) - I read that the pressurised ones are no good and that I should get a breville one that suits their 800 series espresso machines (the unpressured ones), is that what you refer to as being a different size to the 6910?

I looked around today to see if I could match the 5900 and no go, it seems that it's being run out now for a new model which has a dial and a few other toys on it.

  • Has anyone had their machine ship yet?
