To buy or not to buy?

      • +9

You seem to be knowledgeable about automeic (sic) watch, care to share some pros and cons?

      • Does it rust if you don't move it?

        • -2

Not sure if this is a serious question, not rust but you can damage a watch by not winding/ using it for months/years at a time. But not a short duration.

  • I lovvvvve watches but know nothing about them. Would the automatic make a solid first purchase?

      • Sorry, I should clarify. I understand the basics of how it works but not much about the quality and features of one brand/model/movement vs. another. That's what I'm most interested about - quality and "bang for buck".

        • +3

Yup these are good, consider looking at the Orient Bambino, kamasu or sun and moon
Seiko has a great presage line (a bit more expensive)
Citizen is most well known for their ecodrive movement but I have an excellent citizen automatic
The best bang for buck watches are Chinese ones using the Seiko NH35 movement although these tend to copy the look of a different watch, with just the brand name changed, for example look at Pagani design watches
If you like dive watches (big and bulky like above) heimdallr, deep blue, or zelos
Feel free to message me if you want more info

          • @Aileri: Thank you, any specific features I should look out for on the automatics?

            • @chrisandrew: That they are Hackable & Hand winding …

ie. Hack - when you pull the crown out you can precisely stop the the hands from progressing

Hand winding allows you wind the spring so that the watch keeps running without needing to be worn for a period (eg. preferably 40+hrs )

              • @Wally: Great to know. What's the practical advantage of hacking?
Looks like I missed out anyway :/

                • @chrisandrew: So your inner Nerd can set the time precisely (to the second) from your mobile or computer :-)

                  • @Wally: Hahaha OK, OK you got me.

                  • @Wally: Username checks out…. 🙄
But reminds me of when I used to set my alarm clock to turn on right when Triple J would start the morning news, back in the Adam Spencer/Will Anderson era. That ABC news chime was always precisely on time. Miss those days. Sniff.

            • @chrisandrew: Imo the most important thing structurally is the glass, size and thickness

Sapphire>hardlex>mineral>acrylic in terms of hardness (more scratch resistant)

Look at the dial size/lug to lug distance, it looks dumb if it's hanging over your wrist because it's to large

A thick case can also look weird, unless you've also got a large build, try to get something around 10-13 mm thick, which should fit most watch descriptions, although lots of people like the super slim aesthetic, like the citizen stiletto.

              • @Aileri: Thanks everyone. I'm familiar with different glasses with my current running watch and previous Garmin purchases. I've picked up the automatic above after it came back in stock. I figure it's reasonably priced enough to move it on if I don't gell with it.

      • +1

Huh? Why not… This or Seiko 5 as your first auto is perfect…

    • +5

Ultimately a watch is a piece of jewellery (despite what the watch enthusiasts will have you believe), you need to like how it looks, it's size, weight and thickness on your wrist.

The only problem with an automatic is that you will be setting the time every time you wear it, unless you use it daily. The intrinsic valve of a watch is in how difficult it is to manufacture, as that implies it is a rare piece of craftsmanship - hence a status symbol. That's why 'hacking' and a 'screw down crown' are important- they provide very little utility, but the big watch makers reserve those features for their 'top' models, and won't include them in movements they sell to 3rd party manufacturers.

With the industrial revolution, the luxury watch industry has no more intrinsic value than diamonds - its all created via artificial scarcity, and deliberately limiting features in cheaper models in order to maximise profits via price discrimination

Case in point - a Steeldive (see aliexpress) uses a Seiko movement, but provides sapphire glass and ceramic bezel for as little as $100. Seiko seem not to be able to manage for less than $500.

Seiko do not provide better build quality, unless you spend $$ for a Grand Seiko. Its made the same, they just perform quality control on each unit and pull the defects off the production line.

Some people tell themselves watches are an investment to justify spending $10k +, as there is a reasonably active second hand market IF you buy the right model.

Personally I don't like pretending to be a millionaire by spending my annual savings on a watch each year.

Only takes about 15-20s to set the time and date, I don't mind it but it's nice to be able to grab a quartz that's already set (why i like Casios and got a Pagani Daytona Seiko VK63 Meca-quartz

Agree I can't see the value of spending excessively but nice to have one or two decent ones (bought an Oris Aquis in 2012 for $1400 not they are more like $3k.

Easy replacing batteries yourself (if not worried about pressure seal/testing, cheap autos you'd run into the ground, expensive/good autos cost a fair bit to service ever 5y or so.

        • Pagani Daytona Seiko VK63 Meca-quartz

          Cheers for the recommendation

          • @greatlamp: Too easy, it's pretty cool, feels the right weight, sapphire crystal, bezel, nice bracelet (solid end links)
Get a lot of looks, it looks and feels like a more expensive watch (the only thing with Pagani is they basically photocopy the Rolex catalgue).

This bloke is pretty entertaining and informative, and goes through the usual recommendations - there's an Ali Express 11/11 sale coming up.

      • Thanks for that info.

What do you reckon of the Eco drive compared to auto movements, as in wearing the watch daily and knowing what it is.

A lot of people say they get a lot of satisfaction down the line knowing that their watch is an auto compared to a quartz. There is a big price difference though, what do you think?

    • The promaster ny0085 is pretty great. It’s a rebrand of the classic ny0040 which many watch owners consider a must have. The ny0040 is also known as the marina militare, used by the Italian navy in the early 2000s.

I don’t have personal experience with the ny0085, but the ny0040 is a great watch and I’d expect the ny0085 to not be far off in terms of quality.

Generally the advice for entry level auto watches have been either an skx007 or ny0040, but these watches are no longer produced and thus have become collectors items worth far more than their retail prices.

I think you can’t go wrong with either a modern seiko 5 or a ny0085 for your first auto watch and at this price I think it’s great value for the citizen

  • They need a good sale on the new Bulova MIL SHIPS.

I am very intrigued by that watch but can’t justify it at the current pricetag.

I need to buy another wrist first for watches bought from OZB.

  • Really looking for another sub 380 arnie deal. Cmon starbuy!

I got the Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Chrono when you last posted the deal watchnerd. It's my daily driver and I've really enjoyed it. So thanks mate!

  • Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Chrono CA7040-85L

can't beat that deal from June when it was $189 ;)

my favourite black tuna is now $20 cheaper!

  • Any deals on a batman jubilee?

  • Ending up with a few watches these days lol..
Nice having a selection of different ones but hoping not to get too many more. Watch box holds 6, guess the Casios don't need to go in it lol.

AliExpress 11/11 sale coming up, probably just get the new Pagani design PD-1694, now 200m water resistant, improved bracelet and clasp, better lume (but not great). Price is still creeping up on them all.

  • Hey WatchNerd, any local deals on Ray Mears type Promasters with the face numerals?

  • +3

The star of this weekend's sale is the quartz Seiko Perpetual Calendar at $299 https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-perpetual-spc256p/ - The cheapest similar in an automatic movement is around $5,500

  • These are good. I have a blue one of the promaster and like it as an every day watch. The thing I love about it is the light weight and the 8 oclock crown. I wear my watches a bit loose, and get zero crown dig from it! The winder is noisier than an omega or a steinhart, but it's not in that price zone…

  • +1

Thank you WatchNerd! That Citizen Promaster is a little cracker of a watch. Especially for $199. Hoping the Bulova Lunar Pilots go on sale again soon. Would love to pick one up.

  • I'm looking for deals on Casio watches for my 11yo son's birthday. Seems it must be digital or he can't be bothered to read it :-(

  • RIP G-rig lol

    • It's ok mate, had to do some work so deactivated anyway but thought I'd check in on the watch deals :P
picked up another PD at the Aliexpress 11/11 sale.
