Great. Don’t forget the taxes though which you still have to pay when comparing flights.

plus A$54 for taxes, fees and carrier charges (example of a flight)

  • Not showing the 30% off for the flights I want :( Anyone having any luck with this?

    • +2

      My bad, it's domestic only.

      • Ah damn yeah domestic only :(

"Classic Flight Rewards", where fees, taxes and carrier charges can add up to more than the whole ticket on a budget airline.

I remember when frequent flyer points meant unlimited stops, points needed depended only on the total distance. And no BS add-on fees. :-( It was a real reason to fly Qantas.

    • Wait really? They had unlimited stops back then? That would have been awesome.

      • I remember doing Bali-singapore-darwin-alice-home. Maybe some rules, but yes it was awesome in the early years.

    • I haven’t checked for a while but I think OW RTW fares still work this way and are good value redemptions.

I literally booked a classic flight reward ticket yesterday.. Anyone know if Qantas would be kind enough to honour this offer if I got in contact?

    • +2

Cancel and rebook. There are no cancellation penalties.

      • I read that there's a 6000 point fee. Is that not correct?

        • +5

That fee is waived for rewards bookings before 28 Feb 2022 for travel up to 28 Feb 2022.

          • @doweyy: Ah yes I see that, thanks a lot.

How long do they take to refund the points?

            • +1

@vodamerc: Generally about 2 weeks in my experience recently, but one of my bookings is taking a while to refund the points for so I'll have to follow them up. It seems like a manual process which someone completes in the queue, rather than an automated refund.

            • @vodamerc: In our case, we still haven't received the refund from Qantas for flight canceled by Qantas on 15 Sep. Rang them and was told it took up to 8 weeks for refund being provided.

            • @vodamerc: I cancelled a points booking a week ago and the points refund took less than 24 hours. Full points refund.

          • @doweyy: Bugger. I booked the other day for a flight in June "22.

          • +1

@doweyy: I think that's not quite right -> it's that the fee is waived for rewards bookings made before 28 Feb 2022 and cancelled before 28 Feb 2022, i.e. the travel date can be later (e.g. you can book a flight in September next year and cancel before 28 Feb 2022 fee free).

            • +1

@Sydney-bargainhunter: Ah looks like you're right, the travel before 28 Feb seems to be for cash bookings whereas rewards flights are just cancel before 28 Feb and doesn't specify an end travel date.

              Flexible Classic Flight Rewards
When you use Qantas Points to book a Classic Flight Reward, you’ll be able change your travel dates or cancel your booking free of charge.

              Simply book:

              • An Australian domestic or trans-Tasman Classic Flight Reward before 28 February 2022 and you can change or cancel your booking free of charge until 28 February 2022.
              • @doweyy: So just to be clear. If I book a new set of flights for march 26 domestic and I can safely cancel my current March 26th domestic awards flight and get everything back?

PS: took the gamble on this. Even if I get charged the 6k points per person I still wind up ahead by around 6k points with my business class flights.

          • @doweyy: Damn, doesn’t help for my booking made last week for flights in March. Unless bussiness class rewards flights have free cancellation…

            • +1

@sween64: Of course it does. It's a 'Classic Reward', all no charge at the moment.

              • @Tony-Abbott: Does it matter if the classic reward seat is on a JQ flight? (I'm about to book but the dates are still not solid, and nervous they will try catch me out on the free rebooking)

                • +1

                  @mathematicalcoffee: It's all classic rewards.

"Fees will be automatically waived on changes or cancellations to any Classic Flight Reward booking, until 28 February 2022. To be eligible for the fee waiver, all flights in your booking must be Classic Flight Rewards. If you combine Classic Flight Rewards with non-Classic Flight Reward fares ("Commercial Fares"), the fee waiver will not apply. Reward Assistance and Service Fees may apply. For a list of all Classic Flight Reward service fees, see the Fee ScheduleOpens external site in the program Terms and Conditions."

                  • +1

@Tony-Abbott: ah thanks! I read a different T&C that said "Qantas operated" but that must have been for non-Classic Rewards or something.

    • Unlikely. However, you would have better luck cancelling and rebooking.

    • I am in the same boat, booked a return mel-syd on classic awards for 3 of my families.
Just cancelled all 6 tickets, and rebooked again.

Did you get the points refunded straight away?

        • Not yet. I cancelled on Monday, now it's Thursday, both points and $$ not refunded, yet.

      • How long did it take for the cancellation to go through?

        • cancellation is instant. I assume you mean refund. did mine an hour ago, I expect refund will be in the next 24 hours to 2 weeks. refund certainly isn't immediate.

          • +1

@gromit: I cancelled some flights a month ago and the refund of points took almost the full 14 days just for a reference.

            • @deva5610: Thankfully not an issue for me. As long as points come back in the next few months I am good. More than enough points to cover all my flights for next 12 months.

            • @deva5610: Qantas canceled our flight on 15 Sep and we still haven'! received refund of points and surcharges. Nothing happened.

              • @apple0604: I've had to cancel a great many reward flights this year. It has been essential to track them all and monitor whether the points and the dollars have been refunded within 8 weeks.

Problems with refunds are certainly not rare by any means. Some problems have self-resolved after 8 weeks, but most will generally require intervention (i.e. calling Qantas).

                • @UrMumsOnlyFan: We rang twice and were told it would be processed soon. It is hopeless. I will call again after 8 weeks.

                  • @apple0604: Just call again on 1300 134 502 and ask for the points to be refunded now so you can make a new booking and that you are willing to wait the time for the $$ amount.

    • you can cancel and re-book it. I have done it before, no penalty

  • Only NSW, VIC, and ACT can travel freely right?
Other states/territory need quarantine, negative test result.

Thanks OP, booked a flight to Perth over easter. Here's to hoping their borders will fully open by then, lol.

  • amazing! had flights for the family booked for mid next year, just cancelled and rebooked.

  • Does anyone know if we can get a refund for seat selection?

    • Just sharing the info I got from Qantas - the answer is yes you will get a refund. Refunds can take up to 8 weeks for $. Points should be in account within 24 hours

Does New Zealand count as domestic?

  • -1

Somehow classic reward flight still costs total 157 bux on top of 5600x3 points for 3 Adults from Melb to Adelaide lol.

    • Don't know how when the fees and taxes are $39pp MEL-ADL.

    • it includes checked luggage as well

    • You need still need to pay airport fee and government taxes. I think QF has a small carrier surcharge added to it as well.

      • Qantas charges a fuel surcharge. Why? Because it can once it has issued the points you are captive to redeem them. Virgin used to have no fuel surcharge but does now. US Airlines don't have fuel surcharges and so taxes are lower. Also redeeming the miles they often don't pass on Qantas fuel surcharge too.

They hide the fuel surcharge under carrier charges but it's not taxes.

        • Ohh that massive carrier charge of $14 for MEL-ADL….

  • Thanks OP!! I just got one way to Adelaide in July 2022 for 10,000 points. I booked for my daughter too. It is like a 2 for 1 on points. Just paid $101 in tax

Just cancelled and rebooked mine. Saving 25k points! Hope I get points back and don’t have to continuously follow up!

  • so I can redeem a classic reward (domestic) after Feb (e.g. Apr 2022) but still free cancel it before 28 Feb
