    What about for existing customers?

    • +5

This deal is for new customers only! (Or existing customers who know how to create a new email address.)

  • +1

Remember YOU are the product with these too-good-to-be-true VPN offers. Be careful what data you pass through them.

Nord isn't one of the dreadful Kape Technologies ones but never know: https://restoreprivacy.com/kape-technologies-owns-expressvpn…

    • How so? Do you have a link expanding on this? (specifically for Nord)

      • +2

No matter what they say, your data is being harvested. Whether it's marketing, sales, cybersecurity, machine learning, something more sinister or what have you. There's at least some link between NordVPN and Tesonet. We don't know what it is, because the same reason they're seen as "secure" is the same reason we can't find out…

Kape Technologies and their purchases of VPNs like ExpressVPN and PIA as well as countless fake "review" sites have been exposed recently. There's definitely tons more out there we haven't uncovered yet.

These VPNs are fine to unlock streaming sites in a controlled manner (e.g. on an isolated Chromecast or Firestick) but do not send all your daily browsing, mails, banking, communication etc through them too.

        • +1

Most of what you mentioned (perhaps beside daily browsing but even that is questionable since majority is https now) is encrypted using TLS which they are not able to decrypt in any practical sense, the best they could do is a MITM attack which would be pretty obvious and widely reported instantly if they ever started doing it to people, and most if not all browsers would pop up with a warning.

I have no idea how they make money off these deals but I think that one possibility is the companies hoping for user retention after the plan is up and customer paying full price (exactly like telcos and MANY other companies do with loss leader deals)

            @CheapoJohnno:

That is a very big IF. I would imagine most of the folks who are saavy enough to use a cashback site or coming via OzBargain would be equally saavy enough to switch off auto-renewal or even use an one-time CC via Revolut. Obviously, there will always be that small careless percentage who will forget to switch off auto-renewal. Is that enough to offset their loss?

            • @DoctorCalculon: Funny you mention using a cashback site. Pretty obvious where they make their money right? Just curious, do you warn people from using those as well?

Ultimately I have no idea what the real reason for these deals is, I was just proposing a possible alternative to the accusation of data mining ect. If you sign up using a fake email, fake details and pay with bitcoin, if you use the internet like most people do which means +99% of sites you visit are HTTPS, or simply use the VPN for torrenting or something exactly what personal data do you think they are harvesting or selling? I'm certainly not saying that they are not doing something like that but just curious if there is any evidence or proof for the statement that "data is being harvested" or is that opinion exactly like mine and simply unsubstantiated conjecture, or 'very big if' as you put it.

Any suggestions on a VPN provider with great speeds AND great privacy coverage ?

        • What is Tesonet?

          • @deme: Alleged data mining service company. There's intentionally no clarity on what they actually do.

            Fluffy statements like this:-

Tesonet is a proud creator and investor of over 15 various global products and projects.

            Zero detail.

        • How does SurfShark compare to Nord in terms of features/reliability and privacy? Also can any chime in how long it toom for their cashback to be tracked?

    • Thanks for linking that. I think I should add the title so that people understand why it might be relevant to them even if they don't recognise the name Kape:

Kape Technologies (Formerly Crossrider) Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” Websites - September 15, 2021

cashback takes 2-3 months to approve

My last one from shopback still hasn't been approved yet

    • +2

I got my Cashback from this deal (2 rounds ago?) From Cashrewards within 2 months. I've had far better time with Cashrewards than shopback. Faster, no misses.

  • Got nord a while back just to watch things. It's fine for that. Wouldn't dare use it thinking I get any actual privacy from it, given their history

    • What about certain "P2P" type activity not encouraged by the Australian Govt.?

  • +1

I used Nord in China (just before COVID) - their internet restrictions made it pretty much essential.

  • Thanks TA. Got it

  • So how much does it actually cost after cash back?

    • +1

Paid $134 and cash back tracked at $111. So $23 for 2 years is pretty good. Less than $1 per month

      • So 83% cashback?

        • Yea it really isnt 95%

I got $98.40 back from $119.05, was hoping it would be slightly cheaper (dont really have a need for it haha)

Also hate the 45 clicks to cancel auto renewal and then a sneaky email you have to click within 15mins

  • +1

Thank you, was waiting for this deal!

  • I got my cashback last time from CR.
Just be aware that you could get a different price using different browsers…

  • Nord or SurfShark?

Will be almost exclusively so kids can watch TV shows on various streaming services with a little bit of me shopping around for cheaper Steam games or whatever.

    • surfshark only 30% cashback

netflix doesnt work on either anymore afaik

free to air tv does mostly, except bbc

    Thanks @nocure
