This is a well known pass through RJ-45 crimper that works on non pass through connectors as well.
Platinum tools seem to be the brand that popularised pass through style crimping and these review a hell of a lot better than the KLEIN TOOLS A-VDV226-110 Pass Thru RJ45 Racheting Compact Crimp Tool which barely seems to cut strand 1 and 8.
These cost about $100-$130 at the other 2 Australian shops I was able to find them.
elemnet14 and ubuy

These would be paired with pass through connectors like these

Note- these only include a wire cutter, not stripper. The all in one platinum tools version is $130 on amazon .

I am very sceptical of pass through style connectors after seeing the klein reviews, so hopefully these are decent.

  • YMMV but pass through connectors have a bad reputation in the industry, particularly when used in PoE situations.

    • I've read that but haven't been able to find much justification why.
I've read about noise due to untidy cutting and that's about it

      • The biggest gripe I hear is that the conductors that may not be cleanly cut (as the blades wear) are more susceptible to shorts - particularly with a bit of dust and moisture which is not uncommon with outdoor PoE Cameras :-)

It’s not that hard to do the proper way, you might get a couple wrong, but check your wiring order and internal lining up twice and crimp once…

After self teaching how to crimp, I’d never bother with pass thru, but that’s me.

        • so kits like these would be a definite no then…?? link
I was thinking its enough of premade cables, I should make my own. I've never done it before though..

@relentlessM8: That kit looks decent value for domestic. You’ll use around half those tools, but as long as they all work you’re getting your money’s worth.

        • I agree, things are being made too easy or just differently to sell new products and spin the money merry go round.
Stick to the basics, get a cable tester to check what your doing and all will go well….the end result will be the same

  • Good timing..I'm wiring my home with CAT 6.

The Klein was looking good cause it did the pass thur as well.

Any recommendations from experience to share?

    Cheers

Get a cable tester as well

The klein punch tool works good for keystone jacks

  • Can you do CAT6 reliably these days?

    • What does that even mean?

      • It means that I read a lot of stories where people gave up on DIY CAT 6 cables being unable to achieve CAT 6 specs and fall back to pre-maid cables.

That what various IT people have told me aswell, i'm hoping they're exaggerating.

        • Suppose it depends on your use-case and how you terminate them. For patching it needs to be solid-core, with all 4 pairs punched down correctly (using a proper crimp for solid-core wire). It also needs to be done by punching them down into a proper punch-block and making sure not too much unshielded/untwisted wire is exposed. Quality of cable is important too. Don't expect your local reel of Bunnings CAT cable to help you here (if they even sell "CAT6").

Can't say much about small patch leads though. Never had a need to do them myself.

          • @Tacooo: Yeah I'll be punching most of my cables but poe cameras will require crimping on rj45 which is apparently the challenge

            • +1

@teacherer: Yeah I had to crimp the RJ45 onto my CAT6 cable for my cameras too. Couldn't install an outdoor patch point unfortunately. Don't know if they're actually running at Gb or not as the cameras are only 10/100 anyway.

  • Price has gone up to $85 and changed to US stock

  • Was thinking about purchasing this yesterday vs the Klein for $50.86. The deal expired while I was doing some research. Found this today.

    $62.88 Platnium EZ-RJ45PRO Tool with 50 connectors

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B009O1KXQW/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Bit the bullet as I've got some cameras to install at a mates house in the coming weeks and I'm out of practice with the standard connectors. Looking forward to a quicker / easier install. Cheers OP

      Thats a crazy deal mate

I grabbed it and will send back the other.

Got it for $62 like you said, back up to $142 now

      • They changed the tool to the EZ-RJPRO HD. My order is now showing as the better tool. I'll be happy either way.

        • I thought pro and pro hd were the same thing? Regardless, the better deal is always in the comments lol
