J Crew - Free Shipping and Returns to Australia

33

I received this in my inbox this morning in an email.

Shopping surprise: enjoy free shipping, free returns and duty-free shopping now through April 30th.

*Offer does not apply to previous purchases and cannot be redeemed for cash. Free shipping, free returns and duty-free shopping applies to Internet orders shipped outside the 50 United States and Canada only. Orders will be shipped via DHL EXPRESS (see our shipping & handling page for delivery times) and return requests must be made in accordance with our return policy. Applicable discount will be applied automatically at checkout. Offer valid on orders placed through Monday, April 30, 2012, 11:59pm ET. Terms of offer are subject to change.

The only problem is that the mark up the price by >25%. I had an item in my shopping bag for $75 with shipping set to US, once i changed shipping to Australia the item price changed to $103.50

i agree the mark up is huge. I like jcrew stuff but the mark up kills the deal.

How can they call the deal free postage then mark up your product on a so called exchage rate change. Even at paypal's poor exchange rate you still get $1US = $1AU.
Just added somehting to my cart for $158US and it changed to $218AUD, thats a 38% markup.

I guess they thought if it works for Bookdepository it works for us. Mark-ups bigger, but the items often are too…

      • Except that The Book Depository ships free al the time, whereas for J Crew it's a limited time offer. I can't find info for regular international shipping costs anywhere, meaning when the offer ends, Aus shoppers will be paying 36% extra for items PLUS astronomical shipping costs.

I emailed them about the mark-up and they wrote back:

"In line with many global brands, the price of our products vary, depending on where an item is purchased. Our pricing takes into account the costs of doing business internationally, which vary significantly country to country. Most importantly, J Crew prides itself on always offering the highest quality and craftsmanship in our products and our prices are reflective of the value we deliver, in the context of each local market."

I think the key phrase is "in the context of each local market". In other words, they charge as much as they can get away with.

It's unreasonable, because other US stores don't do this (Gap, Anthropologie, Nordtsrom etc.)

    Mark up is ridiculous.

Was looking forward to them launching this service. But saw the crazy markup and gave up.

  • That is very misleading of JCrew - unacceptable in my opinion.
