[XB1, XSX] 76 New Games Added to Xbox Backwards Compatibility, Including Time Splitters, Max Payne, Dead Or Alive + More

New games have been added and several updated with FPS boosts and HDR for backwards compatibility on Xbox systems. This offers considerable value for those who already own these titles but have not been able to play them on newer systems. It also provides modern upgrades for older games free of charge. If you have owned these games at any point in the last 20 years you now have upgraded versions of them to play on new consoles for free, what’s not to like?

  • +6

Halo Infinite multiplayer has also launched early, currently available to download on Steam, doesn't seem available yet on Game Pass.

  • +13

    Max payne 3 finally!

  • Noiiice. But infinite multiplayer today :D

  • +1

Now version updates to games are bargains?

The games are not cheaper than they used to be. Not a bargain.

    • +12

I don't own an Xbox but I assume not having to repurchase a game that you already own would be a bargain to some.

    • +8

If you owned the game previously you’re getting free upgraded versions of software that was previously only compatible with consoles up to 20 years old. If you didn’t own the software previously it IS cheaper than it used to be because until today you would have had to buy an additional console plus inflated prices from eBay sellers to play these games; instead of having to spend hundreds of dollars to play these games you can now pick them up for under $20.

I was one of the 50k people that watched the live announcement at 5am. Whilst this is a nice addition to the Xbox lineup, my first thought was not to post this on OzBargain.

It’s not a deal. It’s a PSA, which is better served on a site like Reddit.

      • 50k? Where were you watching it?

        • -1

          • @guidedlight: There's usually a tonne more on Twitch because that's where they give the prizes away… That's what happened with the Forza launch show anyway. There were only 8k on Youtube but heaps more on Twitch. It also streams to your Xbox and through social channels.

            • @King Steuart: I think streaming on the console itself isn’t offered anymore with the end of Mixer.

              But anyway you are correct.

      • Can you find a cheaper price for these games or another legal way to play them that offers more value? If not then this is the best deal for anyone wanting to play the games.

        • +2

I might agree with you, but the deal doesn’t even mention prices.

It’s a grey area, but I think it does fall on the “not a deal” side of the line.

    • +1

They kinda are cheaper though. Otogi 2 goes for like 200 dollars second hand and now you can grab it for 30.

Is 30 "too much" for a game from 2004? Maybe but it's better then getting (profanity) scalped for it on EBay.

    • +6

Can you find a cheaper price for the harder to find games on this list? Many of them were only available for upwards of $100 on eBay yesterday, they are now either free or available for under $20 with upgrades. Please share if you can find a better deal for them.

  • No Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) :(

    • Jokes aside, FPS boost and significant loading speed up times would vastly improve the game tbh.

  • Price in title.

  • +17

    Xbox doing everything right.

  • +4

While it's great that these games will be added to a service, version updates or fps boosts isn't a bargain. Why not post every update file that each game has and call it a bargain?

E.G. Returnal v2.0 update - suspend cycle feature added, performance improvements etc.

    • +2

That’s not even remotely the same thing. Games that were previously unavailable or playable being given to players for free if they have purchased them at any point in the last 2 decades is not the same thing as updates to modern games purchased on the hardware they were designed for.

    • Lead by example.

  • +54

Wow, the level of negativity from some people on this website is insane.
If it was "save 10 cents on a soft serve ice cream at mcdonalds" or some such "deal" people would be wetting themselves with excitement and it would have 300 upvotes.
This is of considerable value in terms of what microsoft/game devs could be charging to enhance/update all these games to run on current gen hardware.

    • +3

      amen to this

    • +2

Exactly, people come on here just looking for an argument rather than actually considering the value of a deal, especially when it comes to anything gaming related.

    • 10 cents ice cream is a discount and a bargain and derserve a front page post

Giving people a notification that something is available to them for free is not

Your Dyson v11 can now play the radio through a firmware upgrade. Does that derserve a post?

And I say that as a huge Xbox fan literally my comment history is Xbox

  • Would these work on am Xbox One or is this only backward compatible for Series X and S consoles?

    • +2

They work on Xbox One as well :)

    • You'll miss out on the performance boosts I'd assume (maybe not if you have One X?) but you'll be able to play all the new titles.

  • +1

    Awesome, thanks OzGamingNews :P

  • Holy cow I just realised after looking at the full list that conker: live and reloaded runs on new Xboxes.
No game pass, but damn I had this game on both disc and N64z

    • It was actually free with games with gold back in July!

      • But it’s not free anymore? I only just got game pass ultimate, but a lot of the past games aren’t there, like lego worlds etc

        • +1

Correct each month Xbox give away 3-4 games as part of "Games with Gold".
You can add those to your library and then can play them as long as you have Game Pass ultimate/Live.
They will stay in your library forever but need an active Game Pass Ultimate/Live subscription to play them… i.e. they aren't tied to Games Pass as such and won't drop off. But it also means they may not be on there specifically.
It's been around for a while but now the focus is more on Game Pass so it's easy to miss the monthly "Games with Gold" give aways.

Current free games you can add:
          - Hover
          - Moving Out
          - Rocket Knight

  • +6

Between this and gamepass ultimate, I think I might actually buy an Xbox for the first time ever after always getting a Playstation.

So many consumer-friendly efforts make it hard to ignore!

    • +1

Elder Scrolls VI will be Xbox/PC exclusive as well, on Game Pass day 1.

      Obviously a while off yet.

      • +1

      • Yep, just keeps getting better!

I'll likely wait until MH6 comes out anyway to buy one, but at least by then there'll be a decent backlog to get through.

  • +1

This is fantastic news! The only things missing for me are SSX Tricky, Amped 1 and 2. I wish they had been added. Really happy about Max Payne and TimeSplitters games.

    • +1

this is the last drop of BC games

"While we continue to stay focused on preserving and enhancing the art form of games, we have reached the limit of our ability to bring new games to the catalog from the past due to licensing, legal and technical constraints" - Peggy Lo, Compatibility Program Lead, Xbox (Nov 15, 2021)

    • -3

"We care about the old games we can milk more money and consumer goodwill out of. We'll keep making sure we provided you with a quality product that stands the test of time, as evident by our continued efforts to provide backwards compatibility for those games.

In unrelated news, Microsoft is ending its endeavours with the Backwards Compatibility Project. Those rotten game companies won't let us bring you any more games and the hardware these days just isn't good enough to run them. Ha, guess they don't make them like they used to. Noobs. Peggy out." - Peggy Lo (thoughts on Nov 15, 2021)

  • There’s no Titanfall 2 at all on xcloud

  • +1

    No Blur :(

  • Skate 2 finally

  • This is different from the usual streaming or subscription posts.

This is simply a public announcement.

    No deal.

Come at me with those negs, fanboys.

    • +3

Dozens of games which were previously inaccessible or extremely expensive to legally obtain are play are now free for anyone who has purchased them in the last 20 years or available at far more reasonable prices with modern upgrades. For anyone who is looking at playing these games there is no better value deal at the moment.

Go line up for a PS5 or pay a scalper to play some older PS4 games….while we bask in the glow of 100's of classics that myself and our kids will enjoy.
(I gave it a shot) (Tongue in cheek)

Seriously though, why do people hang on a PS5 when there's so much on and XBOX? - exclusives sure….but DANG….

      • What is there to play on Failbox apart from old 360 games?

      • Why buy a series x when all those 360 / og xbox games can be played on xbone?

      • PS5 has more games total than Failbox Series X.

  • I was wondering why I got a few updates in the queue for some old 360 games I got with games with gold.

  • +3

Managed to snag some bargains from ebay before everyone snapped up the games. So in that sense this post was a bargain. I'm gonna enjoy these on my Series X. Thanks.

  • +1

Soooo excited for timesplitters 2 and 3

  • +1

Stupid question - Are these games only able to be bought as second hand physical discs? Or are they available digitally through Microsoft?

    • Also wondering the same thing would get the series s if it meant I could buy and download them digitally too.

    • +1

You can do either; you can insert original physical game discs and the games will download to your console and play as long as the disc is inserted, or as of today you can purchase these games digitally for $15-$20.

  • Fable 3 FPS boost was badly needed. Tried to play through it earlier this year and it was unplayable.
Now I can remember why I hated it.

Forever waiting for Simpsons Hit & Run. Stupid licensing.

    • Yeah i just tried it out, it's fantastic!
Real pity no FPS boost for Fable II for some reason though which is a real shame as it is the only one of the trilogy not available on PC.

    • +4

Go back to your hole mate, your comment is useless, how about you go do something productive kid

  • +3

    Still waiting for PGR :(

    • Same :'(

    • This is apparently the last batch of BC titles. Any remaining titles most likely had licensing issues.

      • Yeah.. it sucks :(

  • Max Payne and Mortal Kombat 9 look amazing at 4k!
Xbox is on such a roll right now…
