$79 each way including baggage.

To compete with Rex who is launching jet flights between Brisbane and Melbourne. Virgin will also be offering airfares from $79.

Rex Deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663501

Price Match Option
Price match with Jetstar for further 10% $71.10 (doesn't look like that includes baggage)

Experience
Both Virgin and Rex use the same planes and seats (Boeing 737)
Both fares come with 23kg of baggage (Rex might allow you to split that across multiple bags)
Rex comes with inflight refreshments (sweet or savoury snack, water, and tea and coffee)
Virgin comes with Velocity points, status credits and potential lounge access.

Qantas is obviously more expensive than all of these.

Negative COVID test required to travel to Queensland at this stage.

Thanks to Ol Mate who pointed out that Virgin is now matching Rex.

"Negative COVID test required to travel to Queensland at this stage."

Plus a 14-day home quarantine, no?

Until 17 December yes, after that, just need two privately-funded PCR tests (one before and one after arrival), totalling about $300.

When the testing requirements cost so much, it seems almost irrelevant to me how cheap the flights might be.

      • any idea if the 2 negative tests can be government tests (free) or has to be those privately funded ones? If so, is there a link to information about them? I’m going to Qld in December from Vic and not sure about what’s going on lol

When I spoke to both QLD Health (phone: 13432584) and QLD GOVT (phone: 137468), they said "standard PCR test" is required and generally the free Government testing clinics are acceptable as they conduct standard PCR test. And once you receive the SMS, you need to upload the screenshot when applying for QLD border pass.

Seems like questionable advice after reading this

I then also called a few clinics who are offering free testing and as an example this one mentioned they conduct standard PCR test via nasal specimen collection which is then processed at a lab then they SMS you a result

          • @PLA74: lol that news article better be fake news or else its gonna be a very expensive trip to gold coast :/. anyways thanks sm for your help. i’ll def look into it more. probably better off waiting till they do hit 80% DD and they make their requirements a bit more clear :/. fingers crossed

            • @Wolfhound: Same hoping that news article is fake news, fingers-crossed

Plus a 14-day home quarantine, no? - No!

These flights are Flying from 19 Dec! (After QLD 80 per cent fully vaccinated target date)

      No quarantine requirement then

Entry restricted to those fully vaccinated at least two weeks before entering Qld
No entry for those not fully vaccinated.

That requirement also applies to Qlders returning to Qld.

      • No quarantine but two expensive covid tests.
Almost as bad. Makes this no deal.

        • two expensive covid tests… Almost as bad (as quarantine)??

What? 2 weeks of forced hotel quarantine is so much more expensive than tests & very inconvenient! ($2520 for WA - glad Jetstar cancelled my recent flight!)
And is currently on top of cost of testing.

          Makes this no deal.
Testing is required for those entering from Hot Spots, no matter how you cross the border or what price the flight costs.
So not an issue of just this Deal. It's still a good price for flight, making it a Deal. As always, it's your choice not to take up the Deal.

(Currently, 1 person travelling from Vic with COVID that entered the NT, resulted in locking down communities at enormous cost & health risk. They'll probably just get a fine for lying on their border declaration. NT just announced stricter entry requirements to protect it's people.)

Of course you don't have to cross the border. Save your money! Maybe another time. There will be other Deals!

But as an elderly woman I chatted with in Brisbane yesterday said "I hope they never open up the border!" Holidaying for over a month in FN Qld recently, it was a common sentiment of many locals.

After QLD hit 80% DD, the PCR test must be done 72 hrs BEFORE entering Queensland… where does it say on QLD's roadmap that you also have to take another PCR test AFTER entering Queensland ?

I’d rather fly with Rex if anyone is wondering. Spacious seats, super lovely air hosts, plus free snacks and drinks (water, coffee and tea). (Virgin removed free snacks around feb-March this year) Rex flights are generally quieter from my experience too.

Spacious seats ? Didn't they buy the old Virgin planes?

      • when compared to jetstar, they're spacious. they're on par with virgin but with the other things i mentioned, rex just seems like the better option to me ¯_(ツ)_/¯
