Probably worth spending the extra $35 and getting the 18TB for $450

    • +2

Unless your shucking and matching for raid etc
      But yes 18th better buy…

Just not sure if we will see drop a little more by Friday…. Decisions decisions knowing my luck I’ll miss out either by waiting or thinking too long on it

      • Does credit card price protection work for amazon items imported from the UK?

        • I want to know, too.

      • Yeah in the same boat as you. But the bullet and got the 18TB.

I got few 14TB in my NAS but $/TB on the 18 it’s a good time to move up.

  • +2

It’s worth noting the 14TB is down to $363, which is pretty good too.. for those who need to match the size, for whatever reason

  • +2

Got the 18TB. Was going to wait till Black Friday but doubt it will be lower than the lowest of $434.35.

Ive been holding out but I'm starting to think the same. BF is in six days. this deal is for another nine. If it drops, Amazon has price protection so you get refunded the difference anyway.

      • Oh thanks for that info. Didn’t realised that.

      • +1

        Amazon has price protection

Source? They always say “as a one time exception …”

        • -2

Not sure why I was negged.

There's a 7 day price change policy. It used to be 30. I've used it aroudn six times.

          • +1

@Freezies: Got a source? I'm happy to be corrected.

          • +1

            @Freezies: Source?

      • +1

        Amazon don't have price protection.

For pre-orders it will charge the lowest price from the time of order to the time of release, but otherwise you pay what it what at the moment you ordered it.

If it goes down in price before it has shipped you can cancel it and reorder, but otherwise if it has sent out already that's that.

You may be able to get a credit, or a refund, if the rep you speaks to likes the cut of your jib, but usually they say "return it for a refund and reorder it."

There is no official policy for price protection.

        • They've given it to me every time, including a seagate drive 6 weeks ago which dropped by $15 which had shipped but hadn't been recieved.

The agent even said to me that it's seven days. So I'm only going by what they have told me and that was Amazon AU.

Edit - The drive was from Amazon US via AU.

          • +1

@Freezies: I think you'll find there's no policy. It's just up to the rep at the time.

Congratulations, you have a jib that people like the cut of!

            • @Morien: I was originally surprised too, but I've used it without issue every time except once and that was because it was eight days out but I tried anyway.

Either I have a nice cut jib or Amazon agents don't give a crap.

              • @Freezies: Sounds good - how do you contact them to request this? I just got caught with a drive from the UK that's dropped $20 but already shipped.

                • +1

@MisterTree: Just the usual Amazon support.

Make all the selections there first, then I usually just do live chat. Good luck.

                  • @Freezies: Cheers Freezies - apparently my jib is not cut enough!

                • +2

@MisterTree: 2 options to contact Amazon customer service. Live chat or call back. I have used both. Live chat is a lot faster as in no waiting in the queue. Phone call back have queues depending on the time of your call but nothing like the queues with other business (Telstra, Qantas, banks, etc). my experience so far is like 10mins wait at most.

                  • +1

                    @cheach: Thanks Freezies and cheach

                      • +1

@cheach: Well, I spent 20 mins on the phone (got them to call me) but no refund or credit. The girl told me to do a return when it arrives and assured me it will be free postage to the UK. Guess I wasn't charming enough!
So I'll buy the cheaper one now but of course my money will be tied up for a month or so. The things we do to save 20 bucks!

                        • +1

                          @MisterTree: Thanks for the info.

I’ll make sure to remember to put on the extra charms if I ever need to call to save that extra $.

  • Can we use cashrewards or shopback for this?

  • is it worth buying to shuck the drive when warranty is lost?

    • +3

Yep, but test it thoroughly first with drive testing tools. When you get a drive with an issue, you need to find out before you shuck it.

      • What tools would you usually recommend for testing?

        • +1

I use the manufacturer tool first and do a full scan (takes a day or so) then I use something like HDSentinel to do a full read/write test (takes another day or so).
          There's a bazillion other tools.

        • +2

I use Hard Disk Sentinel to analyse SMART data. I then use h2testw v1.4 to run an algorithmic write & read verification as I find other surface test procedures are not as likely to identify bad or weak sectors.

  • Anyone know how quiet these things are? My Synology 4 bay NAS tends to amplify the vibration noise where I have it located.

    • +2

Can't directly answer your question about the noise of the internal drives, I have last year's 14tb version and it's definitely not noisy, but didn't take the drive out.

But what I wanted to suggest is sorbothane feet. I built a six disk NAS I stuck on a shelf some years back and it caused the whole side of the house to vibrate - only slightly, but it's the same wall that's next to our heads at night in bed and it was annoyingly audible, so I had to shut the NAS down overnight until I solved it. I did that with 40mm sorbothane hemispheres, completely absorbed the vibration and it then sat on that shelf happily for four years until the motherboard bought it.

  • Has anyone received one of these (14, 16 or 18) recently? Looking at reviews it seems the started packing air filled drives earlier this year. Anyone know which ones are most likely to be helium?

  • Are people buying these to shuck and put into their desktops?

    • +2

I'm sure some are, but I believe the majority, myself included, are shucking to put into a NAS.

  • +1

If the hard drive goes wrong, who would response about the warranty, Amazon AU? Amazon UK? or WD?

    • Previously, after 30 days you deal with WD directly. From memory they paid for FedEx to pick up the drive.

  • +4

    $397 now!

    • Yep. grabbed one at 397
