  • How ping? Is it all over the place?

    • +3

      We get~30ms, ~30Mbps d & ~15Mbps u. 500Gb data.

      But we were getting…
      NBN skymuster 600ms, 24Mbps d & 10Mbps u. @ like $1 per Gb. (Limited to 150Gb) No thanks government :)

    • 20-25ms
      70-130 down & 15-40up

    • ~18-20ms ping which is about what ADSL2+ can do. High compared to the 5-6ms on NBN, but can game with it just fine.
      Normally ~50-60Mbps down. ~5-12Mbps up. ~1-6ms jitter.
Goes up and down during heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Using the previously included Huawei B### modem/router. The modem is right next to me.
My on network Optus 4G phone is doing 18ms, 108 down 6 up 1.8ms j. So I could be loosing some performance from the router.
I would switch to NBN but I have to pay a new development connection fee to NBN (was $300) so I will probably just stay on Optus 4G until the price difference with ABB becomes comparable over a 24month period.

  • Can existing customers on $69 plan transfer to this and upgrade the modem?

    • The modem is a downgrade vs the B818 as far as I'm aware.

    • I did it. They insisted to charge the outstanding modem fee. However the operator is reasonable and helped to waive the fee.
I don't get the modem. I keep using Huawei B818

You should check jitter if you ever plan to game on this

      Port forwarding doesn't work either.

  • can you use it remotely with these home 4g internet?

    • +1

Most likely not, I'm on the 5g plan, you can only connect to the towers around your home. (at least that's what they tell me)

  • I am looking for something like this for my elderly mum to watch netflix.. would this be enough or would you need 5G?

    • +1

      4G is suitable for Netflix.

    • All the data-only sim plans from the major carriers (Optus, Telstra, Vodafone etc) are not useable in modems, correct? I assume it’s because they want to sell you the more-expensive-for-less-data “mobile broadband” plans. Is there any carrier that allows their data sims to be used in modems?!

      • I'm using a data Sim in my modem right now.

        • Which company? I’ve been reading the fine print and a lot of them say “not to be used in a modem” but I guess it’s not really something they enforce then?

          • @Dr Fruit: Optus does not have that in their fine print.

          • @Dr Fruit: Optus.. the guy in the store did it for me. Got a $15 data sim in the 4g modem. He said that I could take it anywhere (with mains power) & it'll work. Got the $65 600Gb phone plan with it. It literally says in the terms & conditions you can't do this, but it works.

            • +1

@Lewd: the 500gb regular sim is not meant to be used in the modem.

i got a data sim which can be used in the modem, but they share the same pool data.

500GB 5g Optus Sim is my phone +$65 pm
5gb Data Optus Data sim is in my modem +$7.5 a month
Total $72.50 pm for 505gb home internet and mobile.

              • @dasher86: Oh? I’ve never thought of this. That seems pretty fair, considering I have a 60 dollar Optus plan right now and am just looking for a home internet option for my studio. How do you find the speeds for that sim and modem at home on Optus?

                • @Dr Fruit: it really depends on your line of sight and the towers around you and also the modem you are using.

I live 300m to a tower and have direct line of sight.

                  I used to have a
                  huawei e5186 20-70mbps down
                  I now have a huawei B818 70-130 down
Peak speeds are at the lower end but it can be erratic depending to the towers you're connecting to at the time.

FYI, for those who can get Optus 5G Home broadband, $79 (save $20) unlimited data and max speed first 6 months, one month free looks quite attractive too:

P.S. They are shipping the new Next Gen Nokia Fast Mile modem.
