BUPA to Return Cash Back to Qualified Members Due to COVID (Need to Update Bank Account Details)

3770

I don't even know if this constitutes a deal or not, so admin feels free to move to Forums if required. But just thought it would be good to let everyone know to check their emails and update their bank accounts for the money.

TL;DR: BUPA is paying customers who had private health cover (excluding Overseas Visitors Cover, Overseas Student Health Cover and Ambulance Only policies) with Bupa for a minimum of three months at any stage between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021. You will need to update bank account details if required. I was offered $80.

UPDATE: The update bank account details goes to the following link if anyone questions it …

Longer Version: I got the email below from BUPA today.

Dear edisonAU,

As part of our ongoing commitment to support you and our community through the pandemic, we’re returning $120 million in COVID-19 savings to our customers.

As you know, access to some health services and treatments has been limited due to government restrictions. This has resulted in COVID-19 savings, which we’re now returning to you.

This brings our COVID-19 support for customers to more than $315 million.

What do you need to do?

We’d like to pay you $80 <or a different amount depending on customer>, but we don’t have your bank account details to make the payment.

You can update your bank details securely and easily online. Alternatively, you can also call us on 1300 135 623 to enter your bank details.

<Link to Update your details here>

Your payment is based on your level of cover (e.g. single, couple or family) and the type of cover you held with us (Hospital and/or Extras) during the eligibility period.

We’ll be providing payments to customers who had private health cover (excluding Overseas Visitors Cover, Overseas Student Health Cover and Ambulance Only policies) with Bupa for a minimum of three months at any stage between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021.

We’re here to help

We know that COVID-19 is not behind us yet, and we’re closely monitoring the ongoing impacts across Australia to see what additional customer and community support we can provide.

Visit bupa.com.au/covid19 to see how we can further support you during this time.

Please look after yourselves and your families during this time.

Thanks for choosing Bupa and take care,

  • I'm getting $55 back, which is peanuts considering my cover costs $293.73 a month (single person) and I hardly claim anything.
Would be really interested to know from other people how much they're getting back and how much they pay each month (single/family?).

    • That doesn't seem right. How come you're paying so much for something apparently you don't need?
I was paying $160 a month with Bupa (single plan too) and was claiming dental/optical/chiro/physio until covid hit. And I thought it was expensive!

      • It's a fairly high level of cover. The extras is a huge rip-off - Bupa have been whittling away at the benefits for years. Will be dropping extras and moving to another fund for hospital cover. Only reason I haven't moved already is it's confusing to figure out the best fund.

        • Someone mentioned they paused their extra. Maybe do that while you wait to find a better fund. Surely if you can save $150/180 per months that would cater for any dental/remedial care you'd have to pay out of pocket. Assuming you don't have any special health circumstances.

    • Not sure what extra cover you have, but I'm paying around $320 per month (couple with tier 2 rebate) for silver plus hospital and budget extra 60 cover.

On extras we only really claim general dental ($300 annual limit is pretty crap however as I like to get cleaning done once every 6 months) and optical for myself only.

      We are getting $110 back.

Health insurance is a rip off but the alternative is paying more in tax with zero benefit so paying for private health insurance is the lesser of the two evils.

      • I wouldn't drop hospital cover but I don't think extras are needed to avoid paying the extra tax.

        • No you don't, but basic one is worth it for the dental and optical. It would cost way more to pay it yourself.

          • @keejoonc: Agree, those extra's are worth it.

Got an email, getting $55 back
That in addition to a $50 Bupa optical voucher for staying with them will be handy to make up a set of specs in Jan. Got the frames half price from the Oakley website, did a similar thing with the last pair. Unreal how much optical stores can charge for the frames, making the completed pair pretty expensive. Otherwise Specsavers is usually good value if you find something ok.

  • Good find
updated my account info - do you get any kind of email to confirm cashback?

    • Nothing. I filled in their form and not even got a confirmation/request number. I wouldn't recommend Bupa.
Curious to know if anyone else would genuinely recommend the fund they are with tho?

Depends on your deal and how long you've been with them I guess, YMMV
i joined quite a few years ago on a corporate deal and got the top claim limits/value.
Compared a few lately and went through the process to change providers, was about the same price for less claim limit and a lower level of hospital cover.
Ended up getting a $50 bupa optical voucher to stay. There were plenty of advertised deals around (particularly eofy) but have to compare apples with apples.

They are all pretty similar i suppose. One trick that may help you is some claim years finish at the financal year some are calendar year,, so you could get full limits again by swapping around those times.

How hard was it to get the voucher? I've never been offered anything in the past when threatening to leave but I think they know I'm sticky by now after 15 years.

@jace88: Not too hard but at the time there were a lot of eofy deals to move/join up etc. Usually harder to get much as an existing member.

      • Ok, to be fair, I've got some automatic rules to move emails in folders and I did receive a acknowledgement of request 3 days ago. My bad.
Thank you for providing your bank details for your COVID-19 payment, these have been received and updated.
If you updated your claiming details before we have processed your payment, we will use your updated details.

        • Got that email today..

  • Any received the money yet?

  • Nope

  • +1

Quite silly they don't even mention when they will actually pay it back. I still haven't received anything. Only received yet another email asking me to provide bank account details - the exact same form I filled out and submitted a few weeks ago. Bunch of muppets.

    • Said somewhere before the end of February

  • Great that they're giving cash back but they also nickel and dimed optical benefits this year… can't believe that my wife and I who have a family policy with basic optical/extras are no longer able to get our Specsavers 2 pairs for $199 each anymore.

… and didn't get the email either :( Checked the myBupa inbox too on both my wife and my account.

  • Wow finally got the email 4 days ago. Would have thought being a 10years customer and didn't claim anything during lockdown would yield me more than $55. Disappointing even after leaving them.

Seems like a standard refund for all, or $110 if on a higher plan. It's something extra back you wouldn't usually get.

Still good to use your extras regardless.

  • Anyone receive the payment yet?

    • i've provided my bank details weeks ago, but still haven't received it yet either.

      • speak of the devil, the payment came through today.

    • Haven't received it yet.

      • Ah mine just came through today!

  • My payment has just come through

    • Wonder how they allocate payments? Alphabetically? Length of time with them? Health cover tier?

  • Also received mine. Deposited ystdy

  • Didn’t get it and signed up ages ok. We pay about 5K every year.

  • Anyone get a payment deposited and then some immediately debited as well? In the end I probably only got $8. Very mysterious with no explanation of how it's all calculated.

  • Got it as well 110.

  • I have not received the money yet. Anyone haven't received the money yet?

    • Same, no cash yet

      • Hi, I was given a COVID-19 refund form to fill details of my account again when I chat with BUPA customer service online. In their email to me, stated we need not do anything if the nominated account state is correct. Lets see if I get my refund now that I have filled in the form.

    • +1

I got my e-mail in December, filled up the form quickly and got money back in late December.

I also got the email confirming that they received my details a couple of days after submitting the form.

      • I got BUPA email on 7th Dec info about the refund. Mentioned in the email my account number and if it is correct I need not do anything which I follow and did nothing. But no money till today. Yesterday, I chatted with BUPA CS and was send the form to fill. Filled and today they confirmed receiving the form. Hope the money will be in soon.

        • Maybe they haven't paid it because of the form. Hope you get it soon!

  • I got $55 as well. Better than nothing but will definitely be reviewing my policy with them this year.

    • Worth doing every so often, just make sure to compare like for like. As ive been with them over 7y on a corporate discount, my claim limits are maximum. Much more than today's amounts, whether you use that much who knows, optical is still a bit light on imo. I got a $50 voucher to stay.

Recently was getting quotes for some specs to be made up from them and Specsavers, they gave me another$50 to use as they udder quoted an item, so worked out ok (and can use the other one next time).

It's time they lifted their game to stay competitive, Bupa optical now have Those Glasses cleaning solution like ss , with free refills. It's the little things.

      • I have a different experience to yours. Have been with BUPA for <7 years too as was under corporate plan from my first job. My current workplace is with Medibank, did a quote which came in a little more expensive so stuck with BUPA. Medibank then ran a promo for additional bonus on top of the usual waivers so switched, then BUPA rang me to get me back (threw in $50 voucher and retained the "loyalty" bonus for extras) so I moved back. Unfortunately with this latest move they also changed extras plan as the old one was obsolete and couldn't be grandfathered.

I checked out BUPA optical around Christmas to use my optical benefit, and even with $50 birthday voucher I could only get 1 pair of glasses gap-free, with Specsavers I could get 2 pairs. BUPA still charge more for their lenses etc so not necessarily better going to BUPA direct vs other providers.
