BUPA to Return Cash Back to Qualified Members Due to COVID (Need to Update Bank Account Details)

3770

I don't even know if this constitutes a deal or not, so admin feels free to move to Forums if required. But just thought it would be good to let everyone know to check their emails and update their bank accounts for the money.

TL;DR: BUPA is paying customers who had private health cover (excluding Overseas Visitors Cover, Overseas Student Health Cover and Ambulance Only policies) with Bupa for a minimum of three months at any stage between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021. You will need to update bank account details if required. I was offered $80.

UPDATE: The update bank account details goes to the following link if anyone questions it …
https://my.bupa.com.au/give-back-form?s_cid=eml:PHI:DCL:edm:…

Longer Version: I got the email below from BUPA today.

Dear edisonAU,

As part of our ongoing commitment to support you and our community through the pandemic, we’re returning $120 million in COVID-19 savings to our customers.

As you know, access to some health services and treatments has been limited due to government restrictions. This has resulted in COVID-19 savings, which we’re now returning to you.

This brings our COVID-19 support for customers to more than $315 million.

What do you need to do?

We’d like to pay you $80 <or a different amount depending on customer>, but we don’t have your bank account details to make the payment.

You can update your bank details securely and easily online. Alternatively, you can also call us on 1300 135 623 to enter your bank details.

<Link to Update your details here>

Your payment is based on your level of cover (e.g. single, couple or family) and the type of cover you held with us (Hospital and/or Extras) during the eligibility period.

We’ll be providing payments to customers who had private health cover (excluding Overseas Visitors Cover, Overseas Student Health Cover and Ambulance Only policies) with Bupa for a minimum of three months at any stage between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021.

We’re here to help

We know that COVID-19 is not behind us yet, and we’re closely monitoring the ongoing impacts across Australia to see what additional customer and community support we can provide.

Visit bupa.com.au/covid19 to see how we can further support you during this time.

Please look after yourselves and your families during this time.

Thanks for choosing Bupa and take care,

    Got $110 back… woo!

    • Don’t get too excited, You’ll be handing it back in April 2022 when they hike up premiums 8%

      • Yes, the premium increases annually and from 2022, they will reduce optical benefits too.

  • Dang !! I was with them till last month after which I moved on to Medibank (via employer). I wonder I can apply for cash back as I had cover with them (and my partner as well) for the whole period during Covid.

  • Do I need to have an active policy with Bupa ? Or having a policy of three months at any stage between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021 is enough ?

    • I just gave it a try. Left them at the beginning of the month… Fingers crossed

      • I called and provided my bank details too. Fingers crossed.

I am not able to login in my bupa account anymore as I don’t have an active policy and I have not received any email from the regarding this give back. Let’s see what happens.

        • Same here. Interestingly, they couldn't be bothered calling me when I cancelled. They kept sending me txt message for ME to call THEM about my cancellation request. Clowns.

  • +1

Nothing in my Bupa account inbox yet

  • Extras only and got $30 back here.

  • Nothing in email or portal inbox

  • Yeah nothing yet either.

  • Interesting. I was with them during that time, but left in March. I should quality, so submitted my details. See what happens.

  • +2

No email and nothing in my Bupa inbox either. I've been a member for several years and have upgraded to Silver hospital and extras back in October 2020.

  • +3

Didn't see this email on the app. Logged on to their website and checked inbox. Email subject - '2021 - Deferred Claims Liability'. $110 coming back :)

    • What date was the message send ?

        Date:18/11/2021
        2021 - Deferred Claims Liability [PDF] 67KB

      • 17/11 for me

    • Same email in the portal inbox, got $55 back!

    • Thanks, i skipped that first and thought its some t&c updates.

  • Anything similar with Allianz?

    • Nope, but the Allianz shareholders thank you for their increased dividend.

  • You don’t need to do anything. We’ll be paying you $15, into the same bank account we use to pay
the benefits from your claims ending in *****1234

    lol

    • Got the 15 as well! But hey $15 is $15 ;)

  • +3

Getting $55. Message titled '2021 - Deferred Claims Liability' which I received on 17/11. Thanks OP.

  • +1

I didn't get an email either, but tried the website inbox - and I saw the deferred claims liability PDF document that states I'm getting $55 back. (not much at all considering how much I pay every month!)

  • Yep, as others have said, log into MyBupa, go to inbox and there's a message there about it.

  • Ms Amos said customers could expect to receive a payment of between $15 and $110 depending on their policy, with an average payment of $71.

  • Completely unrelated but I got this

"Thank you for providing the documentation we requested. Your OSHC policy has now been ceased from 26/04/2021.

As a result of this, a refund is available for $189.64."

Mine's totally unrelated to this post. I got this refund because I had overlapping OSHC and OVHC (I think). I thought it was a scam too but I guess Bupa is in their giving mood.

    • Your OSHC pays for your private health insurance?

      • I thought my OSHC was my private health insurance. It covers whatever Medicare benefit scheme covers. I hope that answered your question.

  • $10 back from Medibank and AHM as well

  • Thanks OP. Got one which says $110 back. Is this for each person in the policy? Or per family once?

  • +1

Woo hoo. $110 here. Free money!

Well not free but not complaining.

    • -1

Small reward for the thousands paid for no benefit during covid. Yes free money indeed for Bupa. PS. You’ll be handing it back just as quick by April 2022 when they hike up premiums 8%

  • The letter for me is dated 3rd Dec 2021…in the future, $110 is so small…what are they thinking? $1000 is better..mine was a corporate policy so big bucks wasted

  • Thanks for the heads up! Missed the email but found a message in my MyBupa

  • Im getting $55. Thanks OP and BUPA

  • got $55 cool

  • Woo, I got $20 from CBHS, should cover about a week of premiums.

  • +1

    Fantastic OP.

I wish more insurance companies did this… I'm looking at you "every car insurance company".

  • I received $55 back and had the letter in my Bupa online inbox, thanks OP!

  • I've heard from AIA the same. They'll refund extras cost in Jan, if you didn't claim any of the extras this year.
They all are doing it for retaining customers

  • +1

Thanks! Just checked…Getting $110 back (good), goes to wife's bank account (not as good).

  • -1

Maybe they can stop increasing my premiums every year.

  • Got $55, just wondering those who got $110 or $120 are they paying for couples/families?

    • +1

      Got $110 - Family cover

  • In last 12 months policy cost has gone up way more than this meagre covid refund.

  • +1

why aren't other insurance companies doing this?

I travelled for about 2000km instead of 20000km in my car last year. Got $0 from my car insurer!

    • I travelled just 100km in my car last year. To get my revenge, I will only get 3rd party insurance and not comprehensive from my car insurer when the policy renews.

      • And to get revenge the insurance company will not help you if you crash your car! 😊

        • I sure hope not! I think I have been involved in 4-5 motor accidents and every single one of them were of people driving into my car (some people are blind). I‘ve been fortunate enough no one has did a runner on me (yet).

BUPA to Return Cash Back to Qualified Members Due to COVID (Need to Update Bank Account Details)

You don’t need to do anything. It clearly states they will deposit money from the same account they deduct from.

    • So what about the people who pay with a credit card or PayPal?

      • -1

Then it goes into the credit card account or PayPal account

        • -1

But Bupa wants to give people cash

“We are returning savings in the form of a cash payment as we know this gives our customers more choice to use the money in a way that is most valuable to them,” Ms Amos said.

  • Member since - 31 Mar 2021

Interested to see if i'll qualify.

  • Damn I didn’t get anywhere near as much back from my provider :( I’ve heard they’re quite caring as well.
I just saw Bupa has 6 weeks free offer at the moment as well, which is better than what others are offering with 2 weeks or 4 weeks, good time to get free insurance in the lead up to Chrissy and New Years! 🥳

  • Thanks OP, $80 back :)

  • $15 here lol….

  • my bupa inbox message is dated 18 NOV 2021, I'm getting $55 back yeah!
but the PDF letter itself is dated 9 DEC 2021 (top right)
I have not received payment into my bank yet.
Whats everyone else PDF Letter dated???
have you received payment into bank yet?

  • Did anyone who is no longer a member receive anything?

  • Hbf did this too

  • +1

They have paid out more in claims this year than I've paid, collectively, in premiums. My hospital bill for removal of a kidney tumour was close to $40k. Moral of the story - it pays to have private health insurance!

    • I’m no doctor but something like that sounds life threatening (perhaps cancerous) therefore wouldn’t be considered elective hence medicare would cover it promptly for nothing

      • Public hospitals in QLD don't have a Davinci robot. That alone cost BUPA $6600 for the surgeon to use. Turns a 1 week recovery for laparoscopy into a 3 day one.

  • CBHS is doing this as well. They're paying it straight into the bank account on file.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Thanks for the heads up mate, got $55 back.
Looks like there will be a letter coming around with these details but you can find it if you log in on desktop and check your inbox.

  • +2

Wow bupa giving something back to existing members. Never thought i would see the day.

Or they tacking it on next year premiums?

Reward new customers more than loyal ones.

  • I left BUPA in October 2020 after they hiked my fee by 12% (due to forced change of cover to something I don't really need). I felt this was unjust in the middle of COVID and we couldn't use some services anyway - precisely what this was about!! I sent a few complaint letters to customer care and (mod: removed personal info / name) - none got me anywhere so I left. It looks like they have now listened, too late!!

p/s still waiting for my email.

    • Got a letter in the mail saying that I'm getting about $100 back!

      • That's odd, it's $55 for singles or $110 for couples only. Anyway got mine in the account the other day :)

        • Yup, $110 back here - got the funds today.

  • Who is eligible? If you actually used it and they paid benefits do you still get this offer?

  • This is very wrong of them to do…… It undoes all the hard work training people to believe this kind of thing is a scam…

also i not Medibank isnt needing to do this… they are reducing premiums for a few months instead.

    • Don't know why the neg. You're correct they had better ways to do it. Tells a lot about their process and leadership. Glad I left them.

  • Well, bupa is reducing just about everyone’s optical limit in 2022 (some quite significantly). Maybe this is just a small way to compensate.

  • How soon do you get your refund???

  • +1

    It's ok.

    • Yeah it's not a scam, read First few posts

  • Been with them 10 years and no email.

    Great!

    • +1

I didn't get an email but had a message in my bupa inbox.

      • +1

Same here. The inbox message is dated 23/11/2021, and the actual letter is dated 30/11/2021. Go figure!

        • Mine dated 29/11 and 7/12 strange

    • Did you update your payment details/follow the link in the post? I was sceptical at first two.

  • The premium increase during covid was more (almost double) than what they're offering to refund … really generous of them, I assume the next premium increase will cover 2x the refund again.

    • Double is hard to believe, any big claims?

Mine was the standard increase.. shopped around and decided to stay anyway.

      • My cover went from $2179 to $2373, rebate was $50 for me.
Only 1x regular dental checkup (preventive), no other claims.

  • Thanks OP. Looks like I'm getting $55 back.

  • Thanks OP. Didn't get an email, but the link worked.
