  • If you have the AMEX Black Friday offer, this will stack another $20 off this price. Another bargain.

    • Should be, AMEX doesn't care what you buy, as long as you spend more than $100.

  • Can this also replace my POS Telstra Gateway Max NBN router? Eg i just connect this direct to the NBN box and put my telstra account details into the Asus router/modem?

If yes, does the same go for this other Asus device https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-RT-AX58U-AX3000-802-11ax-90IG… and which one would be recommended?

THe AX3000 looks a bit more future proof with WIFI 6??

  • Thanks OP just pulled the trigger on this one, I preferred to purchase form Amazon than Centre Com.

If a mesh network is connected to this router via "Access Point" configuration, does that mean devices connected to the mesh will be using the same network configuration set up on the main Asus router? I.e port forwarding / VPN and other settings will be carried across to the other nodes?

  • Why doesn't this router support OFDMA? ASUS RT-AX55 does support OFDMA is that a better choice? it's also cheaper. My internet plan will not have higher speeds than 1Gbps

  • Looking for wifi 6 and unfortunately this doesn't have it.

    • +2

Yeah, you need RT-AX86U for WiFi 6, which is the successor to RT-AC86U, but at over double the price.

RT-AC86U is "cheap" for a reason, it's more than 4 years old now (released in 2017).

  • I'm confused reading some of the comments, so if I buy this I will also need a modem to connect to the internet? I currently have a tplink archer VR2800 which is a standalone, no other device or modem. Will this not be a straight replacement of my current unit? Thanks all.

    • +2

Are you on NBN? There should be another NBN supplied box somewhere, think it's called NCD (if you have FTTC) or NTD (for FTTP). If so, this router simply replaces the Archer.

If you are on ADSL, then the RT-xxx won't do it, you need DSL-xxx ones from ASUS.

    • +1

You could just place the archer into modem only mode and bridge to the ac86u for better wifi and general router performance.
      Read https://www.tp-link.com/ae/support/faq/111/

If you're on HFC you would already have a separate NBN box.

    • +1

The Asus is not a replacement for FTTN or FTTB. You can bridge the TP-Link to the Asus.

      • +1

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry I forgot to say yeah I'm on NBN FTTN.

    • +1

You have a modem router, this is just a router so not a straight swap. Depending on your internet technology you will also need a modem to use in conjunction with this.

  • Ha Amazon wont refund the diff after last night, what a shame

    • Return/cancel the order and buy this again?

  • +2

    Should I go with AC-86U or AX-58U (Wi-Fi6 enabled)?

Price is very similar 199 vs 209.

I'm thinking of streaming PS5 to other devices locally in the house (remote play). Note that PS5 is on wireless, not wired. Using default tplink AC1200 nbn router at the moment and the PS5 streaming is not great, lots of dropped packets.

  • i am using 86 + 68 with AiMesh. Will it be beneficial if I use both 86? I've been having issue transitioning from one AP to another. At times my 4g is way faster than my home internet, which leads me to resetting the mesh. Appreciate your opinion on how I can make the experience better

    • Turn down the tx power adjustment.

      • How would that help? Not doubting, just trying to understand.

        • Turning down the signal strength can help with device roaming.

          • +1

@Twix: Oh ok - also the roaming assistant can be set to a lower value.

  • Does this have value or is it a gimmick?

RT-AX58U has lifetime free AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro™ with automatic, regularly updated security signatures to protect your devices and personal data from internet threats. This strong security offers advanced parental controls, including the ability to block specific websites and mobile app types.

  • Fark bought this when HN exclusive..around 400

  • Regarding UK banned Wifi 6 Band c, based on this document, Band C is classified for outdoor use only, its maximum power is 4x Band B and 20x Band A.

May be it is banned for a reason and Australian regulator is slowed to ban them regarding health concern? Any thought on this guys? I am actually worry about my family health than wifi strength

  • My Asus RT-AC86U crapped itself a few months ago and have been using an RT-AC68U as an interim router. I have no idea what to get as a replacement, or if I should get another RT-AC86U. I didn't really want to spend more than $250, so that limits options a bit. I can definitely notice a difference between the 86U and 68U as the 68U is much slower when using my VPN client's OpenVPN server settings directly through the router. WiFi also seems to be better with the 86U.

Not sure if I should look at something like the AX58U like people are mentioning, another 86U or something else. Another option is to send the 86U back to Asus as they said they would quote me for the cost of repair as it's out of warranty, so maybe I could get it repaired if it doesn't cost too much.
