  • Would any of these be good for people with bad knees that want to get back into the gym?

    • Quite a few of our tapes would help. Without knowing the exact issue though, I would recommend giving ACTIVE Tape a try.
It provides a lot of support while still allowing for full range of movement.
Here is a video that explains the product further and also provides application technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aly6v_4SF4A

      • My wife has bad knees and they can dislocate when she does simple things like getting up from sitting on the floor with her legs crossed or squatting for too long (like from playing with children and holding a squat for a few minutes). I would want to see a physuo before starting her in the gym because I would not feel comfortable with her doing things like squats knowing how delicate her knees are. But I'm assuming they will recommend strapping them.

        • Should look into knee sleeves also

The type of tape you use (whether it be a kinesiology tape or a rigid tape) will depend on what the issue is.
By buying a tape (eg, the Active tape suggested by chickenmix below) and then just "taping the knee" based on a you tube video, you might get a positive result, you might not notice any change or you might even get a negative result.

For example, that particular video shows very high tensions placed over the knee when it is in normal standing/extended position. One issue with this is when the knee is bent then there is quite a high "loading" downwards on the kneecap which can exacerbate the symptoms for certain conditions.
The other issue could be if your muscles around the knee are not as strong as the should be, then they have to work extra hard against the stretch of the tape every time you actively bend your knee. This will lead to earlier fatigue of those muscles and then cause other problems when adjacent muscles are recruited to assist with the activity of bending the knee.

Your best bet is to see a physio, work out what the problem is and then work out what a solution (both short term and long term). If that requires buying some tape, then go for it - but make sure you get advice on what tape to buy, how to tape and where to tape.

Keep in mind too that not all "bad knees" are knee problems. Sometimes it can be hip or ankle problems (or even further afield!) that result in the knee having to do extra work, so even if you don't do any harm by taping the knee, you may not be addressing the real issue.
