Everything you need you can buy from Aliexpress, best time to buy would be when there's increased cashback or some kind of sitewide discount coupon that you can apply.

Do a search for BoboVR, Kiwi Design, Esimen, AMVR etc and look at the different mods, accessories. You really only need

  • a halo style headstrap to replace the crappy stock headband. (Halo style straps place the weight of the headset on your forehead, and it resembles a Rift S headstrap)
  • a basic knuckle strap for controllers
  • maybe some kind of storage zipper bag or charging dock if you want to store your headset somewhere, because you won't be able to fit your modded headset back into the original box anymore.
  • If you're suffering from Myopia / astigmatism you might need to spend some money on 3rd party lens inserts that attach to your headset with magnets and order prescription lenses from optometrist. Read the oculus subreddit for some suggestions.

Do you have anything to contribute?

    • I just got my quest and am yet to play a game with it. I can suggest stuff for the Quest 1 but it is now out of date. I am yet to buy any accessories. There were a few really good suggestions in the Black Friday deal but I will let the authors copy and paste their own material if they wish.

im new owner thanks to amazon.

    so far bought:

    and
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224430919231

yeah sent from china but i can wait.
cheaper at aliexpress for sure but i choose ebay because i have lots of giftcards and then shopback extra bonus as well so ends up cheaper than ali.

i laughed at the "metaverse sentiment" which is basically a logo. everyone wants to jump on the metaverse bandwagon at the moment

The Oculus Quest 2 comes in the box with a foam cover for the face section. Chuck that on when doing exercise games, saves the foam getting gross. Spend the $80 and get the Elite Strap for it, it's really easy to adjust it just right (in my experience) and someone else suggested it, and I agree. use the box the Elite Strap comes in to store the Quest and controllers.

    • you mean silicon cover to cover the fabric foam.
i watched some youtube but i think the halo type is better than elite. well im not sure. could be different preference for each person/head shape

      • Yes, that's what I mean.

If you don't like the strap it comes with try the BOBOVR M2 strap - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002565795550.html?spm=a2…

Found it far more comfortable that the default strap, I also got the small accessory kit with the silicone hand grips and face mask.

Games I've enjoyed- RE4, Superhot VR, A fishermans tale.

    • maybe a basic lens cover as well? as i read somewhere do not let sun shine hit the lenses

      • just drape a piece of cloth over your headset when you're done playing, it'll keep the sunlight from hitting the lens.

Microfibre cleaning cloth — for people who wear glasses you will probably have a lot at home but if not buy a few pieces specifically for lens cleaning.

Got my quest yesterday. I've been browsing a few oculus subreddits for a bit. A couple of notes on connecting up your oculus:

    • A bunch of people have had their Facebook account disabled, and in turn their oculus bricked, if their Facebook name doesn't match their credit card.
    • You can change your fb account name, do it before you set up your oculus to avoid any issues.
    • it also may be worth downloading your fb data in case you do get locked out. At least then if you are locked out, you have all your memories.
    • depending on what post you read, fb / oculus staff can either be really good or really bad when trying to fix it. If you do get locked out, they have a 7 day period before they re-enable fb.
    • damn my fb name doesnt match my cc and i already bought couple games under that same fb account.
just name must match? no need to put real photo profile, right? can be my dog photo in there?
      i really hate facebook.

      • Yeah no one really knows. Fb / oculus don't really give direct answers to why accounts got disabled other than they broke terms of service.

    • Oh wow - I was kind of forced to migrate my oculus account to facebook for this and its strictly a dummy account. I dont think I got the credit either so I might request decoupling from support.

    • I use paypal, does the name have to match too?

      • +1

I've used a few of my paypal accounts that my first name don't match with my FB account name. I've been fine.
I even used my wifes paypal account to pay for games. I really haven't heard much about the credit card and and FB name not matching getting people banned.

As for the Quest 2 unit itself, it can't really be bricked. Your FB account is just banned/locked/deactivated which you yourself can't use. A factory reset and have another owner log in and set up will bring it back to life.

I am lucky enough to have a HTC DAS from when they were cheaper (and I was employed) from my Quest 1 that I will probably re purpose once I find my original Q1 headstrap. It's been nice having the built in headphones.

      • +1

Yeah the are so much more comfortable and the headphones makes it sound way better.
Just like how the original Oculus Rift CV1 is.

For the battery holder, I now own a few of these and only use them to strap my portable battery to gain a good 8-10hrs of Quest 2 time and it also helps to counter weight.
Personally it's worth the investment and attaching a small battery (recommend ankers) to it.

@May4th: As for cable management, you should use a power bank to get more battery life and use Airlink/Virtual desktop if you need stream wirelessly off your PC.

If you need to use a cable for the PC to get better latency like for example Beat Saber on Expert+++ then you can get these cable management retractable system.
            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002958411251.html

These were often used a lot prior to Airlink and Virtual Desktop.

            • +1

@iamtezr: thanks for that, any recommendations for a cable that supports virtual desktop? will any usbc cable do or do we need a special one?

              • +2

@May4th: Invisible cable since Virtual Desktop is meant for Wirelessly gaming/streaming to your PC :)

Reposting this in case someone has missed it in the buying Thread:

"The Steam version is not designed for the Quest (to use it wirelessly)
I'm pretty sure it works for the Quest when you use the Link cable and it becomes wired essentially a "rift".

There's a lot of confusion with Virtual desktop versions. The Steam version allows 'wired' headset to access Virtual Desktop UI where you can control your desktop like RDP. It won't work with the Quest natively if you want to connect to it wirelessly.
So you can connect the Quest via link cable and SteamVR will pick up the headset as a Rift, then you can access Virtual Desktop.
To me it's pointless buying the Rift/Steam version because Oculus has it's own Virtual Desktop (RDP) when you connect via Link cable.
The only thing you get from the Steam version is to be able to view your desktop on a Big Virtual Screen. It doesn't really improve the way you launch a VR Game since you need to use a link cable to attach to the PC for SteamVR to detect the headset. It'll be faster to connect the Link cable and directly launch a SteamVR game via Steam.

The Quest version you install virtual desktop streamer app on your PC and virtual desktop app on your headset which allows you to run the apps/games wirelessly to your headset.
A lot of people try purchasing the cheaper version which is the Rift/Steam version and connect it via the Quest wirelessly which won't work.

TLDR; Buy the Quest Version if you want to use it for the Quest and be able to play VR Games wirelessly from your PC.
Don't buy the Steam version which only gives you a giant Virtual Screen to browse your desktop."

                • +2

@iamtezr: If people are after a Link cable so they can tether to their PC because their wireless router is in another room and the signal is weak then I could recommend these 2 cables.

You need a USB-c cable does data transfer not just charging only. Some cheaper cables only does charging.

Ankers usb-c cable. One of the most popular link cable that Quest 2 users used to buy.
                  https://www.amazon.com.au/Anker-Charger-Powerline-Pull-Up-Re…

Then most people changed to these Kiwi ones because of the right angle connector.
                  https://www.amazon.com.au/KIWI-design-Transfer-Charging-Comp…

Both these cables gives you 1.9-2.3Gbps transfer rate when you do the test.
The official $129 link cable will give you about 2.7-2.8Gbps transfer rate.

The aftermarket cables are more than sufficient for you to run the games tethered to your PC.

Note: The supplied usb-c works as a charging cable and data cable but are notorious for not working after a few use. So don't be surprised if it stops working.

I purchased it without the box since I didn't need the box and extra fees for it anyway.

Tips about Cross Buy games and Family Sharing:

Cross buy games are that you pay for either the PC version or the Quest version and will receive the other version free. Also look out on the Rift Section for daily deals as they tend to have more and better discounts. That way you're paying for the cheaper price and get both versions.
    https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/section/23357321831…

Family sharing games are games owned by the Owner of the headset. Additional accounts that has been set up on the headset and play these games under the 'App sharing' drop down list on the top right corner of your apps window.
    https://casandchary.com/oculus-quest-app-sharing-list/

Promo codes: Make sure you check your emails as Oculus tend to send out 10% off or 30% off coupon (generic but tied to your account) and will only be valid for like 5 days. OCULUS10/OCULUS30.

I've been lucky and been constantly getting them every couple months with 30% off coupon for games. Other people I know only received it once. It's just random.

  • Anyone had issues with referral code working?

I bought my partner a quest with the recent deal. Sent her a referral, she clicked it and made email. Nothing showed up for either of our accounts, and on the website it was sort of inconsistent - saying no facebook friends/link facebook, but it showed her profile pic. Not sure exactly, but she may have used a different email to create an oculus account, than the one in her facebook profile.

We did a factory reset and tried again on her other (work) facebook account (both have her real name). She said the $47 referral was applied. But now its out of battery, and it said 'device error, cooling fan not working properly, device may overheat' or something like that.

    • Worked fine for me. Need to be the same FB account when activating/setting up device as the one which applied the referral beforehand.

      To check status of referral:

Log into your Oculus account on phone browser > open menu on top left > click on the dropdown arrow on the bottom of the menu > click on Referrals > should prompt you to Open with the Oculus App select that > now you should see your referrals and time left until you can redeem the referral credit.

      • Thanks. It says referral sent to her main account - the same one I sent it to and she signed up with. Had that profile pic. Says referral accepted for her 2nd account account which I sent later to retry. Weird. They're sending us postage label to send it back anyway due to the fan error. No multiplayer vr xmas :(

        • Ah ok so the second one went through fine by the sounds of it. I'm sorry, but I guess you'll just have to be content with playing with her instead on Christmas. All the best.

          • +1

@dins: You want us to experience this couped up covid reality together, when there is a big wide virtual reality out there!

            Haha thanks for your help.

            • @JoeSchmogan: Hang in there champ. I shall keep you in my prayers! 🙏

  • I bought two VR's for the kids for Christmas - before I wrap them up , should I be setting them up so Christmas morning isn't hectic ? I understand theyhave to be connected to FB accounts, which they don't have so should I set these up for them as a start ?
Then connect the VR's to them ?

    • +2

Yes that would probably be for the best I would reckon. That way you can also test that everything is good and working properly. Also don't forget the $47 referral credit which according to T&C's might stop this year (requires FB account/s and device activation). Then you could also have some game/s purchased and loaded on there as well and fully charged ready to go! 🥳

  • Would like to get headphones for the kids that they can use when they game on VR, ipad/phone or PC.

Whats a good sub $100 headphones with good sound, bonus points if they come in Pink or rainbow. :)

    • Not sure how they have managed it but the SQ on the headset is pretty good and immersive for mine. I guess if you really want to you could try some wireless Bluetooth earbuds. You should be able to buy a decent pair for a bit over $20.

There's a couple of different variations to get, one of which has a bigger cushion on the back, It's recommended to get that variant as that has better support.

If you need a case, probably grab the BoboVR C2 case. It's big enough to fit Halo style headstraps. There are cheaper cases you can buy but many of them are low profile and you might not be able to squeeze a quest2 with a BoboVR or GOMVR headstrap already attached.

Combine it with the $10 Cashback from Cashrewards.. Ends 2PM today

  • Any cricket players/fans out there you definitely need to try out iB cricket. It's under App Lab when you search for it and fairly pricey at a bit under $50 but great gameplay and tracking. Picks up the bat and bat face angles really well. They apparently have their own bat to slot in the controller for better gameplay but unfortunately can't find a place to purchase one. I've ordered those Beat Saber dual handles with the extention piece hopefully that works fine.

    • Have you tried any other VR cricket games? IB looks good but the price is stopping me atm.

      • There is another one called Cover Drive Cricket for $19 and they have a demo version as well to try out for free (both under App Lab) which is decent.

However iB Cricket is easily the best on there for mine. A bit pricey but well worth it imho if you're a cricket player/fan. Pretty much has everything and all of it works really well. Plenty of replay value for years to come.

Only thing is that you'll need a bit of room to move around but be careful tho they've added a stumping update so charging spinners has become a lot tougher haha.

        • Have you played Eleven Table Tennis? How does it compare to that for immersion/realism/tracking?

I didnt believe the hype, until I kept hearing it and was convinced. It really does feel very close to real life table tennis, especially now I 3d printed a controller adapter. My fav game on VR.

          • @JoeSchmogan: Yeah Eleven Table Tennis another must have for any sports nut great game. I'm more into my cricket tho haha so iB cricket probably my top pick. Immersion, tracking, gameplay, realism (aside from somewhat cartoony graphics) all really well done and spot on. The commentary is bland but that's about it. Overall brilliant definitely a must own for any cricket player/fan.

            • @dins: Also thought I mention that when it comes to gameplay pads are ignored. So that and commentary probably the only things lacking. It would be awesome if down the track they could somehow introduce the front pad with the second controller.

          • +1

@JoeSchmogan: Adding to that probably my top five games thus far are probably

            iB Cricket
            Eleven Table Tennis
            Beat Saber
            Walkabout Mini Golf
            The Thrill of the Fight

  • How on earth do you automatically purchase FREE DLC's

I had to manually click every single one for some of the games in the app..

Pretty annoying as some of them are just free for a limited time and if you dont manually find them and scroll sometimes 5-10 pages you miss out.

For example player 22 - just had to do this.

Any suggestions or am i missing something obvious??

    • I would imagine forcing you to look at other (paid) offers and check daily so you dont miss out is part of the price.

      • Okay I guess on steam it's a bit more obvious. (All on one page or highlighted when sale or free).

I'll take a look in the quest 2 instead of the app. Maybe it's better there

        • I have no idea, I'm not willing to do it so I just miss out.

  • So, my kids have not had much of a break off the Oculus since Christmas and all the adults who have been around have played thought it was soo great too. We are all very impressed.
So what is everyones best games so far ?

update: is really good, maybe better than bobovr m2… basically the same really but the middle support is better =)

      • What is currently considered as the best head strap?

        • +1

Ooo thought you were asking something else for a moment.

The best game for my head I found was beat Saber. Felt good

In terms of strap I got the upgraded kiwi strap and very happy with it but note the kiwi website prices are in USD. Can also get it on Amazon I think

          • @AussieMark: I like the kiwi especially the padded top strap. Tbh I’ve liked all my halo style straps. I’ll probably grab the bobovr pro because of the integrated battery, I have a third party attachment to attach my own battery but I like the ones that fit in with the strap itself but that’s just a convenience thing

Use sideloader to set the quest 2 to 90hz if you purchased zero calibur reloaded as part of the fanatical deal.

With the default 72hz, the game causes me motion sickness and almost made me hurl (only game to do so)

Someone recommended it on Reddit and it fixes the issue.

  • So a replacement oculus elite strap plus battery is on its way as mine died (won't charge or supply power via its USB port to the headset or any device)

Bonus - when it died it was connected to the headset and killed the data lines of the headsets USB port (device descriptor failed not detected by any programs on multiple PC's) so now I need to wait for a restock of the 128gb model from Amazon to do a replacement.

Word of advice don't switch off quest 2 while mid download….

Started downloading time crisis 2 (crisis vrigade 2) and powered off. Now been stuck on download for 4 days…need to setup sideload and find a way to delete it or factory reset

    • Factory reset should be possible if you have the android app and the quest powers on okay. Sideloader should give you ability to browse local files on the headset.

Thanks for the tips. Wish a factory reset would fix my issue.

thanks i managed to find the reddit trick using side quest and deleting one of the files using sidequest.

noticed it didnt work on my mobile phone had to use sideload deskstop

"A lot of people seem to be having this problem recently. If you have SideQuest, go to the installed apps, turn on "Show all," find and select "com.oculus.ocms," and choose "Clear app data.""

  • Anyone can tell me step by step how to play a demo (just any) from steam (windows laptop) with my quest 2, connected via cable.

I have steam account, already downloaded steam and stream vr client. Thanks. A steam noob here..
I searched for vr demo but all are for rift, how do I know which can work for quest 2 without downloading first?.

    • Could be wrong but I read rift games can be played on quest 2 as long as there is a PC connected

  • ok i suspected due to software update, i have bricked my quest 2 (i turned on join beta update thingie from ocu windows software).
screen goes black. factory reset cant help
found the temporary fix from youtube: to cover the proximity sensor (between the lenses) by sticky tape.

anyone else has this issue and what was the solution ?

  • I'm interested to get one for VR cycling with VZ Fit - anyone used one? What sensors do people use?

  • How do I update my referral link? I see people providing a generic link with their username. When I try to make a referral, it asks me to send it to a specific person in messenger.

    • It’s in the app, you can copy it to send outside of messenger

Seems to be www.oculus.com/ referrals /link/ YOURDISPLAYNAME

Had to add spaces either side of referrals so I bargain didn’t hide it

      • someone said that is for non australia, for us we still need to do the old way, make friend on facebook, messager, etc

        • Seems to have appeared like that with the last app update, as it used to only offer the messenger options

          • @Japius: The only option I can see on the phone app is to send a link to someone. And if I put my name into that url, it says invalid referral. They may be A/B testing the referral process.

Seems like the ozbargain referral has been updated to the new way? So I cant actually provide my link

  • I just got my quest, i don't wear glasses except driving at night for some additional clarity

I using 3 as the PD, and find it still a bit blurry, like i have to look for the clear zone of the lens. Also ofcourse strapping correctly helps but not massively.

Question is how do i know if its a lens QC issue? I would think manufacturing would be mature enough now to avoid QC issues on lens?

    • +1

      Get someone else to try
Check your pd. There is an app for it

      • 65mm to 66mm, tried the setting between 2-3mm, but reading around one of the comments said it doesnt make a difference as its hard coded to display the image on the quest to display in three values, idk

      • +1

thanks will check out the links on reddit for lens defects and compare with mine. other tips are handy too.

Headstrap, worth trying? or just go kiwi

  • Steam VR Fest on, anything interesting?

Thinking of getting Skyrim VR. Can it be modded the same way as non VR Skyrim?

  • Idk why but white text on a black background (heck even the text on the home window) has blur and smudge or what they call god rays around it. this happens if the text isnot exactly in the middle of my vision.

Tried to fit the headset manually with both hands, changed IPD settings to 2,2.5,3. Got a lens wipe with circular motion outwards cleaning (meant for glasses, dry microfibre), didnt help. Tried with my glasses with and without the spacer.

Even went to an optometrist today to get my eyes checked (slighty changed compared to my glasses) but the results arent that bad with 0 values for Cyl and Axe (so no astigmatism) and -0.5 for sph. The optometrist said my PD is 34 per eye (ie 64), the glasses on app says 65-66.

Already ordered the Kiwi strap from Aliexpress, and now contemplating getting lens from honsvr.com.

So annoying, if I send it back to get a new set or the lens changed, how much time should i expect before i get a new one? Got from Amazon.

with me, the amazon sent the unit before i send mine, arrived in 1 day, and then i have 2 weeks (maybe) to return the defect headset.

      amazing amazon

      • woa thats great. what was the issue with your unit?

        • yeah first i said to the amazon staff (via chat)
can you reserve that 128gb unit until i send mine back? im afraid it will get sold out (as they cant send 256gb unit - they happy to refund but i want a replacement)
but surprised me after a minute or two, the agent said dont worry this is the tracking number i already order it for you! and yeah next day i got it.

the proximity sensor got busted. its the small sensor right between the two lenses.
when i wear my oculus it didnt detect my forehead therefore thinking the headset is lying somewhere and not turning on.

when i cover the sensor with a piece of paper, it turns on.

exatcly like this - spent hours googling and found this video
