Have a feeling this might be store specific

    • They're older stock compared to the one's on the website (different code numbers). These $2 one's would be older stock from last summer or the winter season just passed. As for the shoe quality it's true you get what you pay for, I've purchased a few BIG W shoes over the last year, they haven't broken down on me yet….. but then I haven't been wearing them regularly they are part of my usual shoe rotation with the more expensive shoes I wear like Nike, Adidas, NB and Under Armor (sidenote I'd actually say that the UA shoes have the most durability…. have a few pairs that are 2+ years old and still going strong, whereas a lot of the Nike shoes I've purchased over the last 2 years have worn out after less than 6 months).

      • My Nike air max 95's sole will wear out before the shoe itself wears out. I used one pair extensively for 3 years.

For me it's not the "sole" that gives out first (some did do that to me years ago, but I learned to wear insoles and just change them every 6 or so weeks), it's usually the stuffing on the inside of the shoe at the back or side of the foot. I don't think they make shoes (all brands) the way they used to. I had shoes in the 90's and 2000's that lasted 4+ years before they started to break down. A lot of the shoes I've owned in the 2010's lasted 6 months or less.

They look like a $2 pair of shoes

That toe cap line is really wonky on the right shoe in that pic

designed for witches with pointy toes.

      • +6

You meant wizards, right? And of course witches who identify as wizards

    • +3

Wearing these will probably turn your feet into a $2 pair of feet.

Your mileage may vary, but I had to get a pair of work-looking shoes like these a few years back. I ended up getting them from Big W because I needed them quickly and they were cheap, but within like 3 days of wearing them at work, the glue holding the soles in place had started coming off and making the soles not fit properly where they were meant to, making it very uncomfortable to walk/work in. The crazy thing is I didn't even do that much walking with them - definitely less than average (probably around 1km/day - would drive to my closest train station, get on the train, then walk ~250m from there to the office, where we sat around all day except a couple of breaks and lunch throughout the day, then did the same in reverse to get home), and yet it still happened. Decided I'd rather just wear my dress shoes I already had instead and threw out the Big W ones within a week of buying them, never wanting to get a pair again. Even for $2, personally I wouldn't get them again. Of course, it could have been a bad batch, and this was like 2 years ago now and things may have changed and whatnot - but I'm just sharing my personal experience with them

    • +5

sounds like the common experience, they just don't work at all, its like they're designed to never be walked in. just for sitting pretty.

If there's a positive, it convinced me to stop being cheap from then on and get some real shoes.

Never went back after moving onto 'industrial/tradie' shoes that look like dress shoes, I dig the full-grain leather a lot.

But if anyone makes some soft foamy sneakers that look very much like dress shoes, I'm gonna be all over that. But much of the 'all black' sneakers the brands make so far still look like stitched up sneakers, so we're not there yet.

      • Exactly - at the time I wasn't that good at saving, so always went for cheaper things where I could. I had a pair of fancier dress shoes that cost a bit more that I only took out for fancy events because I didn't want them to get scuffed/damaged, but were always super comfortable. Changed over to those, wore them for a full 6 months at work before covid hit and didn't have any issues whatsoever. Now at my new job I'm wearing them again, and although we've been WFH since I started, when we go back into the office I have no doubt they will still be comfortable, and will last me at least another year without issue

I got some cheap boots from big W last year and had a similar experience. I think they were $15 reduced from $30. I suppose ‘you get what you pay for’. But looking back now what annoys me more is that the company is doing this and knows that they’ll end up in a landfill within 6 months. Trying to be more conscious consumer nowadays so I avoid things that won’t last long.

      • +1

The company is just meeting its customer's demand. For someone that would use them once a month, $15 could equal a few years usage.

Useful for people who have to appear in court for their sentencing hearing? Wear them once before you get locked up?

    • They will be still waiting for your on release. Just remember, dont drop the soap ….. or tie the shoe laces

    • +1

They go great with the Tarocash suit they borrowed from a friend who also only wore it once to court…..

    • +1

No.. they get these free from Salvos. I lived next door to drug dealers and you could tell whenever they had a court appearance- there were suits in the bin and they said Salvos would give them a new suit each time.

    • not recommended, as this will ensure getting locked up for anyone wearing it..

  • +18

    This or RM Williams?

    • The RM's might last 200 times longer and look better doing it.

  • Wonder how's the inner sole quality?
Probably you need to buy a quality inner sole for comfy walk

    • +10

These shoes are so nasty that they dont have a soul

  • errrr Gilty yer oner……

Waiting for the comment "I have a tinder date tonight, will these impress her?"

    • +2

Probably not when the sole starts to flap around from the front of the shoe 😂.

    • Nah, she wants someone who can buy her a Jimmy Choo!

No stock in Carindale QLD just called to confirm

I once bought $2 sneakers from Big W, wore them for almost 1 year daily for walking/jogging. I found them to be very comfortable and long lasting.

  • wow genuine leather for 2 bux

  • these disposable shoes are good for a week, lol. best to use it as house shoes.

  • +6

Everyone think they getting a bargain, bigw laughing hard you basically wasting $2

  • Perfect for the ozbargain cheapo within you. Wear this when you swap crap for Kris Kringle with all the other cheapos.

  • +7

Crap like this is an example of why consumerism is destroying everything nice.

    • +5

Indeed. Cheap department store and fast-fashion clothing might be a "bargain" in terms of outright cost, but they're a cancer on the environment (not to mention the terrible labour practices behind them).

      • +2

Exactly, people have to understand that EVERYTHING has a price. Just coz you can grab some unnecessary trash you see here on a promo (sometimes I see that they’re even “free”), it doesn’t mean you should if you don’t actually need the item. Someone or something along the way is paying for that item. Just coz you don’t have to “pay” for it doesn’t mean there isn’t a very heavy cost for the item.

We as a society are becoming more and more materialistic and many have something of a hoarder mentality.

  • +2

A cheap and simple solution for those who need temporary dress shoes for balls/dinners/etc this time of year.

I would like to know what jv thinks about this

  • +1

I can still recall the footpain I recieved from wearing these years later. Only recommended for the masochists among us

  • +1

Might be better off looking through the salvos shop pile for tiptoethroughthelightfantastic type shoes.

Do yourself a favour and buy some good quality shoes that will last and be comfortable
