    Get a RTX3060

    • +59

I bet you go onto car posts and tell people to just buy a house closer to work.

    • +3

      Fair point
      1650 is seriously underpowered
1660 should be the bare minimum

      • +1

except theres no new 1660s/ti laptop in production..

1660 got replaced by 3060, while 1650 is still the lowest end still in production laptop gtx gpu behind the 3050

      • +6

It wasn't even a point. It's just a statement which doesn't consider anyone's budget and somehow managed to get upvotes.

    • +14

considering that 3060 nitro has been as low as $1198

      I think it's a bad idea to buy a 1650 laptop in 2021 (almost 2022)

3060 runs circles around it. 1660Ti is also a relatively cheap option, shop around

      1650 and 3050 laptops shouldn't even exist

      • +1

Entry level graphics options like last gen 1650 and this gen 3050 are still great options for those on a strict budget.
I bought a 1050 Ti laptop for my Uni laptop. There’s no way I could have bought a midrange 1060 or better at that stage

        • +11

let me put things in perspective for you

2 years ago I bought a 15.6" laptop with 1650 for $900. it had full sRGB color screen, magnesium body, 1.6kg weight and yes that was considered a deal

buying a plastic one with crappy screen 2 years later just seems like you are being robbed

nothing but my fellow ozbargainers best interest in mind here!

          • @shabaka: My point was towards the last sentence where you said 1650 and 3050 laptops shouldn’t exist. $900 isn’t great though, maybe alright for a 3050

            • +3

@FireRunner: yeah I agree. I would expect this model to be around $749 plus Steam voucher or game redemption or something else to sweeten it

          • +1

            @shabaka: No, this is perspective.

2 years ago, the company I work for was putting microcontrollers into our products for about $4.

Now, we're sometimes paying $200 a microcontroller for the very same mc.

2 years ago was a very different time.

I'm sitting in a house that I've recently bought that I could probably have bought for 70% of the price, 2 years ago :-/

You bringing up that people could have gotten more for their money 2 years ago isn't really having their best interests in mind because you have zero solutions to this (nor can you, it's just how it is). I understand you're not bragging and that you mean well, but what is it that you think you're actually achieving by reminding people that their money is worth substantially less, tech wise, 2 years on?

            • @f23lda: no, I am talking about technology that the main property of is getting cheaper. 2 years ago it was a different market when you could really afford a 1050 laptop for $900, and getting a 1650 was fantastic.

now we're in a landscape where 1650 is what 1050 was 2 years ago, and for just a bit more you can have 4 times more performance (an average 3060, even the one in said nitro 5, is on par with 2070 max-q). it has nothing to do with what you said, mate. there are so much better options on the market for just a little bit more. wait for boxing Day sales for fok sakes and get a decent laptop, not a cripple

and if you ask why, because of resale value and bang for your buck. not because it cost the same 2 years ago, that is just to show that it is worth much less now, and shouldn't be on the market to confuse things.

      • So is the 3060 and 1660ti the same price as this reasonably priced laptop.? It comes down to the economics doesn’t it. You get what you pay for, so pay $1200(do you have a link) for 1660ti or 3060 or $895 for the 1650! Noting that’s $300 more. Maybe link a deal for a cheap 3070 which will be faster than the 3060.

        • +2

          see my comment above

      • +1

But I don't need better graphics? 98% of the work done on a $900 laptop requires zero graphics processing.

        • +5

but this is a gaming machine and I assumed people buy it for gaming

          could have fooled me!

        • +3

If you don't need better graphics you should get a slimmer lighter laptop that isn't designed around 'gaming'

      • Would Intel Iris Xe, AMD RX 5600M 6GB GDDR6, or AMD Radeon Graphics be decent?

    • RTX 3050 is similar price to this 1650 model, DLSS has good performance.

    • link to a good deal please for the 3060 and then the discussion might be value for extra cost as we’d know how much the uplift costs.

      • +1

        https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i5-10…

it's still at $1198 like in the previous deal

I got mine even cheaper from Acer Australia directly (sold as refurbished but looked new)

        • Whats build quality like on these?

          • +1

@knk: solid plastic build. not like the flimsy nitro 5s of the past generations

but not on par with Omens and Legion Pros obviously

  • Wow great price on this one finally

  • +1

That seems like a lot of laptop for under $900

    • +4

Yep should be in the $700 range. Not worth getting a GTX1650 in 2021/22

      • what games are you playing though?

  • -1

    good deal.

  • +7

Bring the Lenovo AMD Idea Pad deal that officeworks canceled pleeeaassee..

    • How does that graphics performance compare between these two? Is this discrete card much better than the AMD's iGPU?

The expandable RAM on this one is useful for my use case.

      • +1

without bothering to look it up I guess the 1650 with 4GB VRAM is about double the performance if AMD iGP.

    • Officeworks cancelled it? I got mine in the mail yesterday

  • +1

What's going on here, why is this gaming laptop always on sale? Especially when it keeps happening at Harvey Norman. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just curious.

    • +2

Because this is the price it should be in.

Even with current desktop gpu priceing, 1.3k for a such a spec is a rip off

    • I speculate that it's probably because they were getting over stocked in response to that one period where everyone was rushing to buy gaming laptops.

  • +1

if only thsi was the AN515-57 which has thunderbolt 4

    • thunderbolt 4 is good investment. What would be the best price for that?
      Maybe I should cancel this

    • AN515-57 has thunderbolt 4 (tested with 4K screen) but not charging which is strange. Windows 11 is not advised yet due to drivers compatibility.

  • Gaming laptop noob here. Is this laptop any good for playing Pubg?

    • +2

Minimum settings it would run fine. Not much more. PUBG is not exactly a well optimised title.

This lappy is better suitable for csgo/val/fortnite/minecraft type of games.

      • ahh ok, thank you

        • +2

if you get 300 bucks extra grab this.

Add in another 8gb 2933/3200mhz sodimm ram stick and you will be golden. It doesnt mean you wont be fine with pubg at 8gb ram but 16gb dual channel does wonders and let you play just about every game out there.

    • Yes

  • Good for kids going to high school next year.

    • No

      • This helps allot.. yes.

    • +4

Your kids must be swole carrying a 2.3kg laptop all day.

      • Didn't see the weight.

        • Did you honestly think a 15.6" laptop would be light? Let alone one with a full bore H CPU and a dedicated gpu?

  • Would this be good for quest 2 ?

    • -2

      Yes

    • +1

No, you’ll want something with more grunt for VR.
The one with a 3060 should be alright

      • Thanks just debating between laptop and desktop.

        • desktop will usually outperform ….for laptops they use low power version of chips due to heat ….desktop they can go full power as room to cool with fans …..

      • Also this links processor is 6core/12threads not 4c/8t.

    • i would say no…. i got the 3060 and it is being pushed playing desktop VR like HL:Alyx on it…. definitely acceptable but I would imagine the 3050 would struggle

  • -1

Just buy a ps5. Don't have to worry aboit upgrades for 7 yrs. And it works. And better games.

    • If you can find one in stock…

    • How is the battery life of the PS5 compared to the Acer Nitro?

      • -2

Akin to the battery on your phone…..ypu realise you can stream it to your phone right?

        • +2

And stream gaming on a 6" phone is the same as laptop gaming how? Would be fun playing competitive e-sports games on those I bet.

I'm sure you can stream MS office too when you need it for anything other than gaming.

Just get a ps5 guys, gaming laptops are redundant.
          /thread

          • -6

@krisspy: Seriously e sports…… Lol who has the time man. Did your parents tell you that it's OK if you don't like real jobs, and that you can always make it playing e-sports? The market for e-girls though is ripening due to many guys interest from their parents basements.

            • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Because playing competitively on games like rocket league or dota/LOL makes you a loser amirite? Buying a ps5 is better since you won't be called a virgin.

Get over yourself, playing a ranked game or two takes less than an hour. Someone serious about getting paid to play wouldn't be buying an entry level gaming laptop.

  • Is Intel Iris Xe adequate for gaming?

    • +1

Depends what you play. Games like CS:GO, Valarant, Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, etc. would run fine.
New release AAA titles, not so much

  • +1

    Acer website is useless.
Can't find the actual models - they don't even show any that use 3060, only 1650.

  • Has anyone upgraded to Windows 11 & is it reliable (drivers tested)?
I don't know why it does not charge via Thunderbolt4 USB-C. Maybe after Win11 upgrade?
