Seem like to good to be true for whole truffle, can anyone vouch for the authenticity of this?

    Must be preserved or something? So wouldn't be as good as fresh.

    • A quick google showed the jar ones are usually around $20 - $30, an actual fresh one was something like $1000+

  • Damn thats cheap.
    Although i believe they're not as highly prized as Australian black truffles.

    Truffles in oil also have a lifespan of up to 12 months.

  • Very well might be too good to be true. I suspect these will taste like nothing. I’ve had plenty of them and for this amount of jarred truffle your really paying minimum $25 for truffles that taste ok or have enough flavour to pass. I’m sure it’ll look good if you want to impress and can enhance the flavour with truffle oil or truffle paste like this

  • Pricing error.

    $7 for 25g doesn't equal $28/kg that they claimed.

    They are chocolate truffles.

  • Not even remotely comparable to a potent Australian Black Truffle, these burgundy truffles are very mild in flavour and best suited for simple dishes and generally you need to use the entire jar or 2!

    Regardless they are cheap and come in handy I grab a few jars every year.

    I've never even held a whole truffle - might just buy this for the novelty.

    I've had them previously, they are ok. You need at least 1/2 on a portion of pasta as they don't have the flavour of fresh. Normally good levels of supply - sometimes you can still get them a month later for 50% off!

  • Does anyone have a recommendation of a place in Sydney where I can buy a fresh truffle? Just wanting to hear some personal experiences as I’ve done some googling but would like some input from others.

      The Australian season is over but when it’s back on (in June) Madame truffles in Chippendale is great.

      She sources them from around the country and tells you about differences between each locality etc.

      Gourmet Life in Darling Point will have truffles, but I think they’re imported European ones at the moment

  • These are probably "summer" or "white" truffle, which from memory are milder (and even more so in a preserved state). Fresh black truffle is mindblowingly fragrant.

  • So I’ve bought these In the past…. Please avoid as it’s preserved in water & I believe salt. It’s not your dried type where you can shave it upon what you want.

  • I get this every year. Decent. They use oil and preserve the truffle. The truffle Oil is great to use while cooking as well.

  • These taste terrible. Very bland and not much aroma. All you taste is the oil, which doesn’t even have much flavour. Texture is also weird as it’s been preserved in the oil. I would avoid.

  • Don't compare European Truffles to the ones here,They are very different.

  • I've tried both whole and the salsa versions. Not much taste/flavor in the whole version, I'd avoid that. The salsa has more flavor but salty.

    I find the best use of the salsa is mixing it with unsalted butter to make truffle butter which tastes pretty good on toasted baguette.

  • A TAFE hospitality teacher once told me these truffles are most likely used to infuse other products e.g. oil. You are getting the byproduct of that process which doesn't leave much to taste
