Most Affordable nbn Home Internet 100Mbps in Sydney CBD

Hello there,

Can anyone recommend a good 100Mbps home internet in Sydney CBD (millers point).

My budget is around 80$.

The commbank more nbn offer was a great one but could not find the coupon (I have a cba account).

Thanks!

    Mate internet, i pay $79 for 100/20

    • Thanks for the input.
I looked into their options and they seem pretty good. Their 99$ offer seems the best value (208 avg speed vs 83 for the 79).
I just have a general question, do I need to a specific modem or can I get any cheap modem from ebay?
      Cheers

      • 250Mbps is only for FTTP and HFC. Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC?

        • Ah I have no idea what are these. But when I put my address on the site it tells me that the building has FTTP (Fibre to the premise). Is there anything else that I should be aware of?

          • +1

@ozbozb: Those are the different types of nbn used in different locations and each type has differences in maximum speeds and reliability. FTTP is the most stable fixed line connection and can do 1000Mbps. nbn install their NTD which is a fibre box and you plug in a router to it. A cheap router from eBay is suitable for 100Mbps.

            • @Twix: Yea on the chat they (Mate ISP) they said that I need a router with WAN port. Their option is 170$ so im gona buy my own.
Do you have any suggestions by any chance?

              • @ozbozb: VR1600v isn't bad for smaller properties. How much do you want to spend? Do you live in a house or apartment?

                • @Twix: its a studio. the cheapest I could get. Im looking at tplink ac1200 on amazon around 60$.
I could not find yours on amazon or ebay (new)
                  is the ac1200 comparable?

                  • +1

@ozbozb: TP-Link VR1600v is the router that Mate sells. The TP-Link Archer A6 AC1200 from Amazon will do. A Telstra smart modem gen 2 is around $30 from eBay and it works with Mate, Aussie BB and Superloop.

          • +1

@ozbozb: If you have FTTP you have won the NBN lottery - it's the best, most stable technology and you can have all available current and future speeds.
            /me cries in HFC

            • @xylarr: Yea the building has FTTP and FTTB from my understanding. I went with FTTB iinet. the deal is pretty good 60/month for 100/40, no fees, free modem, + 3 months free.

    • Optus 5G Wireless Home Broadband (if available in your area)

      • Telstra 5G and Vodaphone 5G as options at $85 pm and around 300Mps speeds.

Have been with Aussie and Mate in the past year. If my max budget was $80 then I would go with a 50/20 plan with Aussie over an 100/20 plan with Mate. Speed would probably be the same if not better with Aussie.

    • Oh the 100 mate speed is similar to the aussie 50? I'll check aussie 100 prices.

      • +1

When I was with Mate I was struggling to get more than 10Mbps on FTP downloads and even web browsing was slow, any time I did a speedtest though it would always return a result around 100/20. They claim they don't do any sort of throttling but something fishy was definitely going on, I'm assuming they preference traffic to the servers used on speedtest.net.

        • Yea that's a deal breaker. I often download large files for ps4 games updates and 4k movies (30gb+)
They do have 1 month guarantee, Im gona chat with them. What was your location if I may ask?

          • +1

            @ozbozb: Inner West Melbourne

          • @ozbozb: I’ve also been with Aussie Broadband for the last couple of years and never had a hiccup. Speeds as advertised and sometimes better. I also had the privilege of being able to test two internet connections side by side, being FTTP. I am 100% certain that others throttle and, despite providing evidence to them of congestion and throttling, they denied it. I won’t name and shame but ABB are defo my recommendation. Am a little annoyed the prices have gone up over the years but that’s the price for quality.

    • Speed would probably be the same if not better with Aussie.

LOL what? A speedtest right now shows for me 93.08 down, 20.48 up. Please enlighten me how a speed limited plan at 50Mbps with Aussie will reach 90.

        Have you read my comments?

        I'm not the only one - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/649101

        • Yes, just did.

I cannot rule out a poor set up of your internal network or devices. I can tell you, i have no issues maxing out my connection using PS4 downloads, web downloads, uploads for work, etc. So that tells me the statement

I'm assuming they preference traffic to the servers used on speedtest.net.

is not something that i see.

The only downside to mate so far, that i have seen, no 24/7 support.

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Everything besides mobiles are ethernet connected :)

            • -2

              @Cheaplikethebird: That doesn't mean anything.

Anyway, OP wanted an ISP within his budget, Mate works fine for me.

              • +2

@Lord Fart Bucket: Issues completely disappeared after switching back to Aussie. I'm just providing my experience which other people have also experienced (have a read of the thread I linked above).

Anyway, I wasn't replying to you, you're replying to me.

@Cheaplikethebird: i literally just switch to mate this week and its pathetic, went from a TPG 100/40 to mate 200 something and the throttling is ridiculous, with TPG i was maxing out easily over 10mbps any time of the day with torrents, now on mate they throttle me to 1mbps, i wish i had of taken the future broad band deal

    Check out superloop

  • I checked all the suggested ISP
    Mate 79 for 100, 99 for 250
    Aussi 79 for 50
    superloop 70 for 100 (first 6 months), 99 for 250 (first 6 months)
I chatted with Mate, they said that my address has FTTP and I should expect the best speed. Looks like a good offer to me.
    Will any cheap modem work?
    Thanks!

    • Yep, there best speed often hits 10Mbps ;)
Guess you can xfer once you have experienced them :P

      • haha yea another member also pointed out the same.
They do offer 1 month risk free guarantee so they refund everything + there is no contract.
I don't mind getting any other service, they just seem the cheapest especially with the option to upgrade for 250 for extra 20/month if I need to. The second option would be superloop for 6 months then transfer to a cheaper service

        • You seem to think line speed = actual real download speed ;)
You can "upgrade" to 250 and still get their max on 10Mbps, good luck

          • @7ekn00: its usually divided by 8, so a 100 speed should get you around 12 download (which is what i am aimin for).
250 should get you 30 download

            • @ozbozb: Um, look at what I wrote, 10 Mbps (megabits per second, NOT megaBYTES) …
When the quality of the ISP is at fault, it doesn't matter if you move from 100 > 250, you will be capped at the crappy ISP rate of 10 magabits per second in peak times ;)

If you're CBD you probably have access to FTTB through TPG or a reseller. Way faster and cheaper than NBN.

I am with Exetel using TPG network and so far its been amazing $60 for 100/60 unlimited.

    • TPG FTTB is cheaper and a good product if you can get it.

OP has nbn FTTP which has maximum speeds of 1000/400 with room to spare for future upgrades. 100/60 on FTTB is not even close.

    • Is this what you're talking about? https://www.tpg.com.au/fttb though the 100$ set up fees kinda kills it
What is the difference between nbn fttp and fttb?

      • That is it. Check your address as TPG FTTB is not available in every building.

The difference is nbn FTTP is fibre all the way into the apartment, more stable, faster speeds and more choice of ISPs. TPG FTTB is fibre all the way to the basement and from there is copper to the apartment, the speeds are slower and less choice of ISPs.

        • I checked my address. it has fttb. is iinet any good?
          https://www.iinet.net.au/internet-product/broadband/fttb/pla…
This seems like a good deal if the speed is stable around 90
its 60$ per month with no activation fees (if 6 months contract) and a modem included.

          • +1

@ozbozb: TPG are the owners of iinet. Go with whoever is cheaper.

          • +1

@ozbozb: My speed is pretty much always around 90+ and I personally have never had any drop outs. The TPG network is pretty under-utilised as most people don't know it exists so you're almost always gonna do better than going with an NBN reseller as they often oversell their bandwidth.

As Twix said, FTTP would be better and more reliable, but personally I have never had any issues with speed or reliability. Everything has always been snappy and more than enough to steam HD.

How does a $100 setup fee kill it if you're going to be better off in your sixth month? $60 per month is better than $80 per month in the longer term

Assess your "real" needs. Do you really need the added expense of an NBN subscription possibly 1,000$ per annum?

Are you just surfing the internet? Just checking emails? Connecting TV to Smart Features, such as watching Utube? Streaming movies? Accessing Terrestrial TV internet, like Iview, etc?

Then you may be able to "HotSpot" your computer, your TV, your Internet Radio, to your phone.

I am with Optus on a 49$ per month plan with 100gb per month.

And I do all above, via HotSpot from my phone. So for 49$ I have phone, data, and essentially, all my house is connected. I do not need non, and this is what they are not telling many people. non is hyped up and marketed as if YOU NEED IT - when in actual fact, YOU DO NOT.

  • Anyone have used Kogan? $78.90 for 100/20.

  • -3

    I pay 60 for 100/20 with telstra
