Oh no my mobile research has failed. Good find!

    • Great find indeed. I can't find it priced cheaper any where else.

      Cheaper locally

25 potential security vulnerabilities detected in firmware 3.0.0.4.386.44266. (Google translate probably needed).

That firmware is already 4 firmware versions old.

It's a good thing it's currently up to firmware 3.0.0.4.386.45934 which was released on 2021/11/10. Hopefully all of those previous security vulnerabilities were patched out. The firmware log does state that that firmware version fixes several vulnerabilities. And so does the previous versions dating back to version 3.0.0.4.386.44266 all state security vulnerability fixes.

Use of condoms can be up to 98% effective! I’d recommend this 10-pack which leaves you with two spares

    • What's significantly better on that list? And, how does anyone know if any other product out there is also significantly better without an independent analysis?
In other words, that is a high number of vulnerabilities but not much else is better anyway.

  • +4

    Just wait for GT-AXE11000

    • 6g?….

    • That’s exactly why the ax11000 is magically on special now!

  • +9

If you turn it over does it run fast .

    • +1

Nah, it’ll jump on your face. Then you’re in the matrix.

    • +1

      No it's a replicator…

  • Wow thats pretty expensive. Got it (and sold it). Got it for circa 500 from HN back in the day due to some promo.

Noob question here, our current max speed for FTTC is 100mbps, while FTTP maxes at 1000mbps. What is the benefit of having a router that has speed higher than 1000mbps?

    • +6

local network file transfer, ie, nas

    • +3

If you have media/storage servers in your premises then having high throughput can help transfer data easier on your LAN between devices.

      • It'd be really dumb idea to chose WIFI over Ethernet for that.

    • +1

Well, there's a lot of marketing in those theoretical speed numbers.

Like yes, it does support 4x4 MIMO but there's practically no client devices with 4 antennas, so you will be able use half of it in the best case. Then there's 160MHz channel, which is only possible if there's literally no other WIFI routers in 500m radius, so again divide number by two. And don't forget that bandwidth is shared between Rx and Tx, so one way it'll be half of it. Also if you have more than one client devices working simultaneously on set of antennas you need divide bandwidth by number of those devices too.

So divide stated number (4804Mbps) by 8-10 to get realistic numbers.

TL;DR - you'll get better and much more consistent results with Ethernet cable.

FYI unless you need the feature set in this, the ASUS AX86U which often goes on special at ~$400 and lower, performs identical to this, if not even better in some cases according to reviews. We purchased it for our home (big household) and it covers the whole area while 25+ devices are connected to it. Performs better than most mesh setups from other companies that we tried, just as a stand alone by itself, especially with Merlin Firmware (which is very simple to install & does not void warranty). On LAN and on WiFi 6 it hits 1Gbps consistently without an issue (on WiFi if you're close).

As mentioned above, the reason the AX11000 is going on special often now, is the release of the AXE11000, which should be soon in Australia (from what I remember it's pending ACMA approval for WiFi 6E). So for those that want WiFi 6E, then consider waiting for that to release in Australia.

    • Just wondering, which mesh set ups did you try? Any you didn't like as much?

      • +2

We tried an Orbi dual pack and a Deco triple pack I believe, as well as the Telstra Router + Gen 2 Booster before that, and none of them performed as well as the AX86U overall. Over LAN and very close proximity results were similar with some, but over distance and actually using the internet on devices around the house, the AX86U outperformed them (placed centrally and covering the whole house).

        • Thanks Fyrelor! I think I'm going to get the XD6 and then add the AX86U as the primary router when it goes on special ^_^

        • How big is your house?

          • @sween64: If you're asking me - it's a double storey house but concrete slab upstairs so it's hard to get good signal strength in all the rooms. The modem is also located at the end of the house.

  • please enlighten me, in what circumstance would one need a tri-band router? especially it is already 4x4 5Ghz @ 4800Mbps per 5Ghz band, and 4x4 2.4Ghz @1148Mbps

AFAIK the best AX receiver you can get is Intel AX210, which operates at 2x2 5Ghz @2400Mbps, so even if you have 2 AX210 network adapter equipped devices transfer files back and forth via wireless there shouldn't have any bottleneck with MIMO.

Why another 5Ghz band? Not that one will connect their NAS wirelessly.

    • the third one is to reduce interference for gaming, I'm not sure if it can be used for mesh

      • if one of your 5Ghz channel is interfered by others, you should change it to a different channel. If your 5Ghz channel is not occupied, there shouldn't be much interference at all anyway?

mesh seems to be a valid reason though, but buying a 2nd unit of this means its more than $1200 out of pocket, at that price one could just route a few ethernet cable thru the roof and use Wired Mesh instead for way cheaper.

        • ethernet cable is not really an option for my heritage house, Dedicated channel is always better than having to manually change it. This router is for people who don't really care about money

  • +5

Jesus Christ that router looks like it's about to try and take over the world.

    • or kinda like an upside down spider..

  • +2

Turn this thing upside down so it can crawl again

    • +2

don't turn this thing upside down so it can crawl again

  • -5

Pretty high price for a pretty old router. Paid about $330 mid-2017

    • +3

The router was released near the end of 2018: https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/ASUS_GT-AX11000

Whoops sorry for the typo. Was meant to be mid-2019. See my comment here

Main point was (if you can), wait for an Asus cashback offer and then pay with discounted gift cards.

But if you're looking for a Wifi6 router, just go for the AX86U as I personally found it more stable than the AX11000, and I believe you can load Merlin on it too. I've since moved on from Asus but had no issues with either one (AX11000 GUI was less intuitive and required a restart every few months).
