How do you find the 2019 vs 2015 in general performance and response? I know the other benefits but curious about this.

      • The biggest issue is the remote, for most content from EMBY (even 4k stuff) I don't notice any difference. But the 2015 one is the least used one, these days.

  • My TV can’t seem to play H265, does this play this format?

    • +1

Sure does via plex and other apps like VLC

  • Good morning - can I use this as a plex server? EDIT - looks like I can, just wondering how well it performs compared to a NAS and how much I can store on it. But seems like a good option

    • Yep!

      • Thank you - how do you manage only having 16gb though?

        • +1

          NAS or USB external drive.

          • @Vinnie Barbarino: I was looking to get this to avoid a NAS ;-) - An external drive / micro SD plugged into the Shield should work right? Can I then stream to multiple TVs if I wish via Plex? Just have no experience with this device so want to make sure it will meet my needs!

            • @dinglejerry: External drive will definitely work, some devices may need the Shield to transcode the file and depending on how many devices are streaming at the same time it may slow due to load, but I don't do this myself so someone else may need to chime in re how many streams the Shield can do.

              • @Vinnie Barbarino: Perfect. Yeah basically I am just wondering if I can use the Shield and Plex Server on it to basically have something like two people stream different movies to say two TV's in the house at the same time - if it can do that, it will meet my needs.

  • Hi one and all, If you have downloaded content that is Dolby Vision, and have a DV enabled TV, install the KODINERDS version of Kodi, and then it will display correctly.

    • That doesn't Auto update though right? And not compatible with the official store version?

I just downloaded Just Player and wrote a code so Kodi can prompt to use JP when trying to play back Dual layer Dolby Vision

      • Yes it may not auto update.
I have Kodi genuine 19.4, Kodinerd 19.4 and Nova Player with Just Video set as default video player
So when Kodi updates, go see if there is a update for nerd version. Really wish Nvidia has sorted this out, they should have by now.

        • What apps do you recommend for install in Shield other than those? Any add-on?

          • @racingmiku: Your favourite file explorer type app I use X-PLORE,
really only use it for film viewing,SBS, ABC TV catch up, some youtube.
i hang 4 hdd off it, 3 on a usb expansion externally powered and 1 usb direct

how does this compare to google tv?

    • it was asked before mate

How does something this expensive not support HDR10+? And HDR on YouTube? Strange to me.

What interests is me if the AI upscaling would/could make streaming from apps like Kayo look much better? If so it could be worth buying to replace my 4k Firestick. But hard to say without seeing it.

    • +9

How does something this expensive not support HDR10+?

There must be dozens of you that care about HDR10+ unfortunately.

      And HDR on YouTube?

Because YouTube in their worldly wisdom decided to choose an HDR profile (VP9 Profile 2) that nobody else uses and requires hardware decoding. The Shields chip was developed before YouTube made their harebrained decision. YT then decided to move to AV1 profile, but again, this requires hardware decoding that the Shield was not built for.
It will require a completely new chip for the Shield to do YT HDR, they are not alone with this issue.
YT has helped with iOS/TVOS by creating software decoding, but again, it is chip specific. They attempted to have this work on devices like the Shield, but it was a shit show.

    • +1

I use the AI upscaling on 1080p 50fps Kayo streams, and notice an improvement (be aware that the 2019 Shield tube is limited to 30fps AI upscaling).

  • +1

Thanks, was waiting for a decent price to do a price protection claim.

  • My 2017 Shield still works perfectly - not sure I should pull the trigger. Argh.

Does everything I want it to, but is there anything I might be missing? No HDR on YouTube seems dumb. I watch several hours YouTube a day, so would want that.

    • Yeah same here. Can't really think of a good reason to upgrade!

    • +1

Yeah same my 2017 is still going great.

Apart from DV which nothing in for me just yet. So not worth upgrading just yet

    • Same here, any big advantages to upgrade?

    • +2

I'm in the same boat. Some of the changes: New remote (can buy it separately though), dolby vision support (including in netflix app), AI upscaling of lower res content, very slightly faster chip.

I think I'll wait for the 2022/2023 model.

      • Exactly my though.
ATM not justify the upgrade just yet. I mean my 2017 Shield dose every thing I need and DV is not worth a small upgrade. I think the next version will be the one to upgrade.

      • Yup, same here.

    • My 2015 model still going strong and I have no use for 4K upscaling as my TV is not 4K. I have upgraded the remote which is great and a huge improvement over the original version. Everything is working so well still that I see no reason to upgrade.

      • what remote did you upgrade to?

        • The remote that comes with the current version.

  • +1

Has anyone sideloaded the Xbox Game Pass and given cloud gaming a go? I did this on the new Chromecast but just not enough grunt I reckon.

    • I hadn't even thought of this, I'd love to give it a try

    • +2
      • +1

Oh wow. That's a massive value add imho.

    • +1

I tried sideloading with my google tv. Audio was choppy and it wasn't the best experience.

    • +2

I sideloaded Game pass and the experience is quite bad. Works great on PC but on the shield it is laggy :(

  • Can this be connected to LG SP11RA and used to play dolby/ surround content ? My Sony TV does not seem to support the surround sound/ dolby atmos, even though I have connected it via ARC channel and changed the sound settings

    • Yes, but for that you will need to connect shield directly to LG SP11RA.

The reason why its not working is probably your tv doesn’t support Dolby Atmos pass through

  • +1

Thanks ordered one of the last 3 😊

  • What's this like with all the latest audio/Resolution etc?

I have a 2019 Sony Android tv and it won't do Full stereo etc, etc to my Denon Amp from the APPS. My old Minix h9 used to pass full audio to my amp so i could do straight stereo etc, etc.

    • I have the 2015 shield and it has passed every single format to my receiver no problems.

      • Same here 2017 shield and Denon AVRX4500 - no issues at all

  • +4

Pro tip - get a silicone (rubber) cover for the remote. It's not particularly grippy but works well.

My kids destroyed the initial shield remote by dropping it and then did the same to the two aftermarket replacements I'd bought.

The silicon cover makes it easier to grip, has rubber on the corners to cushion falls, and additionally makes it much easier to feel where the flush buttons are without looking at it.

    • link pls?

        • +1

I could & I did, can't hurt too ask the OP in order to cross reference, but obviously you on the other hand are sensitive today =P

            • +8

@magic8ballgag: Its a forum / chat site. if someone comes on and says they know a specific product is worthwhile, whats the harm in asking them for a link so that we can know exactly whats the one they are talking about and obviously they have already got a link / done the research so it helps save time for everyone else reading it and trying to locate what they are talking about. Never really understood the point in coming and saying "search yourself" because by that adage, no point ever having a forum or chat site or asking questions.

              • -6

@lonewolf: This isn't the forums, it's the comment section of a deal, and they were asking simply because they couldn't be bothered searching for themselves.

I have no problem providing information to those that make the effort, but most of the time, it's very clearly just someone being lazy and relying on others to do the hard work for them.

                • +1

@magic8ballgag: Yes and the comments section is here to provide a section to talk about the product and / store as well as to ask advice or provide advice on it and in general things that relate to it. There are no rules that are saying people can't provide advice or talk about things in general in this section. The person in question asked for advice and was replying to another person who had come on here to try to help people by providing his experiences as well as his solution or ideas . He had already done the hard work and had come on here to state his results from that hard work..hence to help others so there isn't doubling up of that aforementioned hard work where everyone keeps doing the same search numerous times
And still may not find the exact same product as the OP of this thread. If there weren't conversations like this about these items then no search would ever help because there would never be anyone providing help and their experiences …

                • -1

@magic8ballgag: Not sure why you're getting negged, buy I agree. Asking people to dig through their order history for the link to a cheap $5 accessory that you could easily find with a quick google search seems a bit ridiculous and lazy, not to mention the tacky way of asking for it.

                  • -1

@[Deactivated]: How should I have worded my simple question oh great scholar? Now considering your an expert at "ass-umptions" riddle me this, would I have thanked them politely (again which you consider "tacky") once they have replied or ?

Thank you "magic8ball" - "gag" & "le457" the great Oracles of OzB, merry X-mas to you both ;)

                    • -1

@adinico: Now, if only your original comment had the same amount of effort, you probably wouldn't have been accused of being lazy! 😉

Let me know if you need a hand with your Christmas shopping. 🎅

                      • -1

@magic8ballgag: Looks like the OP didn't mind, just you for some peculiar reason, but unlike you I won't make ridiculous "ass-umptions" based on one simple reply on a forum alone ;)

                        • @adinico: Link to what you're talking about?

                          • -1

@magic8ballgag: First you asked me to do something (searching for myself) then stated/accused me of "laziness", is your memory ok, don't you know how to read a thread or are you just being "lAzY"?

Now if you look two comments below, you'll see that the person I ask politely for a link replied, too which I then thanked & up-voted. Hopefully it's up too your satisfaction/standards, I wouldn't want too hurt your fragile feelings more than I already have ;)

                    • -1

  • anyone know if the good guys will price match online prices?

    • +3

It's the same price at Harvey Norman, they'll match that.

      • Just called a few TGG stores they said no due to no stock shown in Victoria. My argument that HN having stock for delivery did not work. If you guys know a store in VIC matching HN price do share!

        • +3

I'd just buy from Amazon based on principle if they are going to be that difficult lol

        • +1

Just got one from Maribynong with price match. They only had 2 left afterwards though and I think at least one staff member was grabbing one

  • Back order. Good luck getting this before christmas. maybe next year.

  • How does this compare to a Vodafone TV unit?
I have a Vodafone TV and find it operates pretty well with everything I need. Is this worth getting as an upgrade?

  • Is the difference with this other model mainly in the storage? Have no prior experience with the shield. https://www.amazon.com.au/NVIDIA-Shield-Streaming-Player-Per…

    • For one thing, the cheaper version can't run Plex Server. Relevant for me, maybe not for you.

      • +1

It is absolutely relevant for me - that is the main reason I got the one in this offer! Why can't the other one run plex? Good to know I didn't get that one then!

        • Maybe because of the fact it can only run 32bit and not 64bit like the other one?

  • Can you run in car with cig plug power?

  • Hoping it will still be this price at Boxing Day, with some cashback bonus.

  • +2

Can I honestly ask what do you guys use this for? That is if you got a gaming PC, you have a console and portable gaming system, plus a Google Chromecast TV or Amazon Firestick already?

I see no point buying any more devices

    • +1

Nvidia Shield was one of the first Android TV devices released in 2015 and is a direct competitor to the Google and Amazon devices that came later.

Obviously, if you already have a Google Chromecast TV or Amazon Firestick then it doesn't make much sense buying this device if you only have one TV. However, households these days usually have two or more TVs so you'll want one of these devices for each TV.

      • Ah right i see, thanks for the explanations, i never got my head around nVidia shield because at that time there were other cheap android TV boxes before Chromecast TV and FireStick came out….

I didn't think buying an android device at this price was worth it.

    • I use the older 2015 model as my streaming media box, but also use it extensively for couch gaming with Moonlight. Best of both worlds with a PC without having to purchase a console as well.

That's assuming you have an Nvidia GPU, but there's also just using Steamlink and a few other apps you can use. Considering it seems to be a fair few console exclusives are now coming to PC I haven't had any need/want for a console since the Xbox 360. But of course, YMMV.

    • +1

Clearly you don't need it with your current setup. Don't buy it.

    • I have all those and and a 2021 Sony A80j, bought this after hunting down a sale for it for a while now.

I hate having to leave my PC on just to run Plex or Kodi, none of the other devices you mention support lossless audio; important for those with movie collections like me.

Plus I have 4TB ehdds to plug into the shield, can finally move those files off from my PC without having to invest into a NAS.

  • Can anyone comment on the picture quality of this vs native apps on an LG OLED. I read a few posts from another forum where people found the Shield apps including Netflix, Plex, looked worse than the TVs own apps.

I'm interested in a Shield to bypass having to use ARC which I'm finding a massive pain to get working perfectly with slightly older amps.

  • Great device, but I could never get it to connect to 5GHz wifi. Tried everything but it'll still say the 5GHz network is too weak even though it's 3-4m from the router. Every other device I have says the signal is "excellent" and connects with zero problems. Also tried connecting to 5GHz by allowing "low power signal" but same deal, just says "No internet".
I thought maybe it's faulty so tried another Shield TV Pro - nope, same issue. There are a few reports online of the same thing, seemingly without a clear solution. Anyone experience the same? I don't want to fiddle with the channel settings on my router when every other device is working fine; last time I tried this, speeds dropped considerably.

    • Try setting up a new guest network or upgrading to mesh WiFi 6?

  • +1

Looks like HN still has them in stock for the same price, and depending on your location you can probably pick one up today :)

    NVIDIA Shield TV Pro

  • Apologizes for the noob question.
I have an LG c1 tv and a ps5. What uses can this provide?
I know this had been asked before it's just I don't know these uses are applicable to what I have.
    Cheers

    • +1

I bought mine because my TV doesnt have an eARC or Atmos to power the receiver. If your TV has all the features you need, don't waste your money.

  • Dont these things get its price reduced over time. I bought mine last year for this same deal price..

  • +1

For those wondering what formats is supported by what players, look at this https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-nOzJkgEmo_wrU3zyUy2…

  • Anyone play Steam games on their shield? what controllers do you guys use? i bought the Logitech F710 and it doesn't seem to work very well.. keeps dropping out.

    • the official shield controller works fine for me.

  • This or Apple TV 4K?

  • Damn it been waiting for this one, but missed out.
