  • Great product, pulled the trigger.

      Now he’s dead.

  • Are there many downsides to getting the 2017 version?

    • It’s not as powerful.

      • Would that might a difference for streaming or just games?

        • +1

Games only. For streaming they don’t miss a beat

        • +2

Still rocking mine, its fine, as long as you don't game. Quick af and beats anything else i have at home.

          • @tightm8: Does it beat the amazon firestick 4k Max

            • @easternculture: No idea, but if Amazon has taught me anything, their UI generally sucks.

The ATV just works, its simple, fast and smooth.

              • @tightm8: Not sure about that. Didnt like the Apple TV experience. Google TV chromecast is the best UI IMO but doesnt have enough memory so randomly resets when cache is full. Had to return 2 back so far

  • Extraordinary deal

  • Can this version be jailbroken or at least have Kodi installed on it?

      • Thanks, presume that's no for the former then?

Have several Android boxes that are more than adequate for my needs, just wondering if auto-frame rate in Kodi on the Apple TV makes it worth tinkering with.

        • +2

It can be jailbroken with checkra1n but requires a special cable and soldering so it’s probably more effort than it’s worth.

    • You're better off installing Kodi on something with better support.

    • If you want Kodi then better off getting an Android device. Xiaomi Mibox S is pretty good. Nvidia Shield is better if your budget allows it.

      • Thanks for the suggestions, but have all the Android bases covered - original Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box 3, few VTVs & several generic Chinese Android boxes acquired over the years.

Probably just conditioning from early days of Android TV boxes, that never quite lived up to their promises, making you continue to seek the ultimate box that does it all.

TBH, quite happy with the VTVs kept on original firmware, just read that the Apple TV had great auto frame rate switching, so thought might be worth a dabble for the sale price. Happy to stay away from Apple ecosystem though, as like to customise & use 3rd party apps, without having to invoke a store.

Apple TV is good if you use subscription services eg AppleTV+, Netflix, Stan etc. It has good app support and yes its AFR matching and audio support is close to the best. But if you consume most of your media via Kodi then it's not worth the hassle.

Fenix 6s for $299 as well. Link

    • There was a Galaxy S20 FE 5G for $300 but sold out now.

      • +1

        And GoPro Max for $224!

        • thanks bought and posted as a deal

5 year old model next week

    • -1

      Exactly what i was thinking

    • Well, released in Sep. 2017, so not quite, but still well over 4 years old.

    • +2

you realise literally 0 difference with the latest model

the new models just have a better cpu which makes 0 difference unless you plan to play stupid games on it lol!

This model has 4k Dolby atmos and vision which is all you need

      • I never got into gaming on the ATV after buying both OG 4th gen and then this updated 4K model. They make rock solid/reliable streaming boxes though.

Some people complained this model only has a 100Mbit ethernet port but honestly it's never been an issue for me except when I wanted to run speedtests for fun.

        • What's the wifi like?

          • +1

@sween64: AC so if you have WIFI 6 , it may not be for you if your upgrading all your hardware

            • @easternculture: If it's close to the AP then AC wifi would be better than LAN. My LG C9 is the same, only 100 Mb LAN but AC wifi.

        • +1

@jace88 apple tv 4k 1st gen is Gigabit ethernet
@sween64 LAN runs at full duplex, so you can run up 100Mb and Down 100Mb at the same time. wifi is only half duplex.

          • +1

@mighty-atom: Sorry my comment was ambiguous but you're right - the 4K model (rather than the OG 4th gen which I bought initially) has gigabit ethernet. I use wired on both as I'm trying to reduce the number of devices sharing the wifi in my apartment.

    • And the latest version is barely a step up from this other than the remote

      • But if you want to upgrade to the new remote , thats $79 so your paying $166 inc shipping all up

Might as well wait for a deal on the new version the way i see it. Im sure there will be a few deals come up for the new version soon. Looking at previous deals, cheapest its been is $209 so far

  • What’s the model can’t find it in the product description.

  • got one thanks!!!!

    BC = Before COVID era

  • Now back in stock @$265.00 each.

May have been a price error.

    Edit: maybe not???

    • Lots of sales on at catch now 70% lots of things.

  • was about to submit order then went OOS :((

  • Great deal, missed out on getting 1 to play with

  • The YouTube app on these refuse to play 4K videos at random for some reason, and sometimes limits the video to only 720p…

    • That's because you have bad internet connection. You need a 100mbps connection.

      • Mate I have an FTTP 1,000mbps connection. Download 100gb games quicker than I can take a shit… Stream 4K Netflix simultaneously no problems. Only the YouTube app is having issues

Apple TV is connected to an android tv.
        Same YouTube video:
Apple TV - stuck on 720p with no option higher
Android TV - streams at 4K 60 no worries

Apple TV also can not do 4K 60 videos on YouTube

The problem is definitely on Apple’s end, google it. It seems to be a common issue

  • Damn! Been wanting to upgrade the bedroom Apple TV for a while :(

  • Damn I came too late

    • That’s what he said (not)

  • Just remember they don't do True Hd or DTS HD out to amps.

  • Is Apple TV subscription worth it?

    • You can still get 3 months free with a hardware purchase.

  • Any one received the item, my order status still showing ordered.

    • +1

yeah I got mine on the 31st

    • +1
