BD10OFF

Original Coupon Deal
I’ve been watching for a deal like that for a while. Good bike for 4-6 yo who’s comfortable riding (or learning to ride). Lightweight and comfy for kids, good reputation. 30% off combined with a further 10% from eBay makes for a nice bargain. RRP $479 has 3 internal gears - easy to switch for those little hands. Cheers

  • Almost $300 for a bike that the kids will outgrow pretty quickly…

How is this better than an $80 bike from Kmart?

    • +1
      1. It is well-build, lighter and has better geometry, making it more fun for the littlest
      2. It has gears which no 16” bike has
      3. It works for shorter kids 4-6 year olds, a 16” may already be too small and 20” too large
      4. Good Resale value means you can sell it for $200 2 years later
      5. There are no geared 16”-18” bikes available second hand

I’ve outfitted my family and myself with second hand bikes. This I had to buy new, for all the reasons above.

Not for everyone of course, bu we like to ride together and my young one needs to be able to keep up

If you’re just learning, a 16” will be more than enough

      • Ok fair enough.

Am I am the market for bikes for the kids myself.

The thing is, does a 4-6 yo really need gears on a bike? Kids and I learnt without gears on a normal bmx style bike.

Pretty sure kids for decades have been learning without gears on bikes

        • Depends on the riding they do. My girl is ready and needs gears to go up steepish climbs and to keep up with the rest of us on the flat. Most trouble with gears at this level is how stiff they are and it’s hard for little hands to push a lever or rotate a switch. Internal gears remove than issue

        • if you are wanting to spend less even post pandemic you can usually get the non geared versions of these for ~$80 to $140 depending on condition. Both my kids at 4 & 6 have E350 youngest has been on it since about 3.5 and oldest still has a fair bit of room left. They are heaps better than a steel frame cheapie, they are lighter, better geometry so they kid sits better and can get more power down, and they last for handing down/selling.

    • Wouldn't be better if you find out and put a real comparison here to help the community?

There’s plenty of info on the BYK range - not hard to find out why those are so popular. This one is the rare internal gear variant - which most sub-20” bikes don’t offer. Fair to say not all 4 yo are comfortable riding, or changing gears…

  • BYK make good bikes, this is their MTB version which is why it has gears and will help on the trails and also teach them how to use gears from young.

Can't compare to Kmart bikes which are much heavier and use lower quality parts. If you're just riding around the footpath then sure.

  • Keep an eye on gumtree and eBay and youll find one at a fraction of the cost. You might need a new chain (or clean it) or get a new seat $20 /$30 or so.

  • Found a 20" Byk with 3x Internal gears on the nature strip for daughter. Just needed a little maintenance and looked like new.
Nice bike, well built and very light, but she is outgrowing it. Time to pass it on soon.
