Door Damaged at Parking Space at DFO Brisbane

This happened today at DFO Brisbane. A Westpac livery car damaged my side door didn't leave a note. I take a picture every time in a mall or closed parking spaces. What are my options ? How do I get the owner contact details? I have car rego number.

It's a 2 month old car and this happens :(

How can you prove it was them? Witness?

    • +2

So the car that came after Westpac car confirmed this. So I have witness.

      • +8

Who is to say that the driver that came after could have done it and is now blaming the WESTPAC driver?

        • Anything is possible. BUT I spoke to the drive who came next. Now this is not 2 hr window. I went in for 15-20 mins and came back asap. The next driver has Parked in reverse and the dent would not take place in that area ( where it is currently)

      • +33

        So I have witness.

No, you have heresay. You spoke to the person who parked in that spot next who says they didn't do it and therefore it must've been the car that was parked there previously. In order to have a witness they need to have witnessed the act.

You can try with the police and the centre but it's very unlikely either will help. Centres are notorious for not wanting to provide access to their cameras even if it somehow was in the right position. Similarly the police aren't going to provide any contact information, especially given you can't prove it was them.

If anything your best course of action would be to contact Westpac and see what they say but they'll also likely ask for proof that you don't have other than the car being parked there. There's a tiny chance they'll act in good faith.

Sucks as it shouldn't happen but that's the way it is. People are selfish and careless.

          • @life is suffering: yeah, if the witness saw it then it's not hearsay lol. Or if they were willing to say that they saw the Westpac car do "something" then leave the space abruptly. Could have checked witnesses car for damage as well. If you contact Westpac, I think they will look into it, as they may be able to easily narrow down who was using the car. That person has not filed a claim while using a business vehicle. The nearest Westpac is in about 4km away in Toombul. Could ask to speak to a manager there.

        • +6

          *hearsay

      • -1

Get witness to write stat dec, report to police.

    • Can you check if there were camera's recording the mall parking space where ya car was parked at the time

  • -1

Go to police and if they are helpful they will ring the owner of the car for you. Perhaps get in touch with Westpac too.

    • -1

Can I just call the police ?

      • +3

        Consider submitting a complaint to:

        https://www.westpac.com.au/contact-us/feedback-complaints/

        Or over the phone.

I have a feeling the Police response will disappoint you. But you can do both at the same time if you like.

        • Cheers. I was going to do Westpac but a bit hesitant to call police lol

          • -2

@life is suffering: You could visit the closest police station and lodge some form of written complaint, I am sure you could do that. They will ask you for details in regards to the time you visited the mall and where parked. If you have a witness who is ready to confirm the incident then that would be cherry on top of the cake. by any chance do you have the rego of car involved.

      • +2

I suspect the Police response will be under whelming. I had my Qantas account hacked and points used to buy an IPhone along with a name (phoney) and a delivery address (real). I had noticed this 'theft' from the QF notification and stopped the Iphone being sent. When I informed the police of the address etc they advised they would look into it when manpower allowed!…….

        • +1

Depends entirely on the station/officer and how much evidence you have. If he had dashcam evidence they would help.

    • +3

And then that owner starts a thread like…

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/536619

  • -5

Lucky you have a witness. It's basically a hit and run. Call police link and give all the details you have. They can look up the owner of the car with just the rego plates.

    • -2

It's basically a hit and run.

A "hit and run" requires that the driver is actually driving.

    • +1

Have to agree with rek here. I can't say I've heard a dented door referred to as a hit-and-run before.

      • Yeah not sure whats classified as hit and run.

Also witness I don't have one. They didn't see it happening so it's apparently hearsay :(

  • +38

    . A Westpac livery car

    High yield investment strikes again.

  • -5

Next time get a dash cam (front and rear) and have it hard wired

And park in a better spot next time (away from other cars as best you can) , a little exercise is always good for the system.

    Good luck

    • DFO on boxing day. Wife had to shop. There was no parking spot near by. I always take precautions while parking away from all card and with max gap all the the time:(

    • -2

Yip, nothing beats a flat car battery!

      • +1

A dashcam pulls about 1 amp at 5v. Your cars starter motor pulls hundreds of amps at 12v. You really think a dashcam will flatten a car battery in a short time?

        • So you’re telling me that my car is in my parking garage without moving all week then this won’t impact the battery?

          • +4

@WreckTangle: OP was gone 15-20 minutes, and that won't happen in that time.

And if you install a dashcam properly, it will have a voltage cutoff so that it won't flatten your battery.

          • @WreckTangle: Modern dashcams have a low voltage disconnect that can be preset by you so it turns out before the battery goes flat.

Depending on which parking mode you select, it can last from a couple of days to about a week before it turns off.

If you set it up properly you still have enough cranking power left.

        • Yeah not even closely relatable. A balloon can go out with a bang, but a small leak will also flatten it over night.

Most car batteries are about 55-65AH, not to mention depth of discharge is only about 60% for flooded led acid until damage occours, take into account you still need enough juice to start the car you might only be looking at 10AH of usable capacity. Plus I'd guess your 1AH draw estimation is over, might only be 0.5, but either way that will most definitely drain your battery in a day or so.

Would want a switch to manually power it on for parking spaces only when you won't be there all day.

How is this going to help anyway since it hit the side of the car outside the view of front/back cameras, you can seen who is parking there but we already knew that.

Edit: or better yet use a little 20,000mAh external usb battery back and not run the risk.

          • @peterpaoliello: There are 4 posts above and below yours that say that most dash cams have voltage cut-off kits for hard-wiring them for parking mode. They will cut power to the cameras when it falls below a set voltage so that the car can always start.

And yes you're right in that my 1amp draw is overrated, the A129 front and rear cameras pull a combined 2.23w , so quite low. So even 10ah of a 12v car battery is 53 hours of power.

A front and rear camera setup with parking mode and impact sensors turned on will be recording when a car door impacts the OPs car, and then you will get footage of them leaving the adjacent parking space. So they can definitely be helpful, especially if the car is in corporate livery.

      • Decent dashcams can set a voltage off point so once the battery drops to say 12v, recording stops but the car will start without issue. I get over 4 hours of recording set up that way. I haven't tested to see how long I can run it for as I don't bother with the car in the garage.

      • +1

Clearly, you don't know the tech

They come with hardwire kits and barely pull any power
They also have the option to plug in an external battery pack that can record 24/7 if you wanted it to

    • +3

Avoid parking next to other cars in a car park?! Where do you live where this is possible?

      • Like I park next to a walk of top level withlw traffic.

  • +7

    car is suffering

  • +1

with the shrinking size of parking spaces (well round here they are) this will keep being an issue - even when you park klms from anyone else.

    • +7

That, and the trend of people buying bigger and bigger cars :D

    • True that! Tight car parks

  • +2

Get a dashcam. I caught the driver that smashed into my car. No need to rely on witnesses Justice served.

    • +1

Yeah I need to install one soon. Can't avoid parking spaces in the future

    • +3

Yep a front and rear dashcam is a must really. You wont get video of them dinging your door, but you will see them returning to the vehicle/leaving and catch the knock + sound which gives you some hope of tracking them down and claiming for the damage.

  • +8

I take a picture every time in a mall or closed parking spaces.

    Paranoid much?

    • +9

New car of my life. Yeah I'm paranoid lol

      • +5

        :( why downvote?

      • +4

        don't stress mate
        Enjoy the holidays!
As time passes by you will forget and the love for the new car will get lesser and lesser.

        • +1

True carderor , forgotten about it now. Thanks for the advice

        • +2

Love for car can always increase more and more especially when you discover cheap turbo kits for it :)

  • -1

Get a point in time rego owners (costs) and then if company spend another $ 9.00 at asic (best value ever) and send a letter of demand with a copy to the local police station.
There is no shortcut. Then if no satisfaction Qcat is another extra cost option.

I was in something similar. I was in the car and the other owner's wife and kids open the door hard enough to chip the paint off my door to bare metal.

Short story. He said he is with RAC and produced an international driver's lic. and refused to give other details. I took photos of rego and him and went to the police and said I need to make a report. They told me to fill out an accident report form online. I asked what details I need to complete the form as I only got Rego and driver refused to give me info. The police looked up the rego and confirmed the make and model and colour with me. And gave me the rest of the info. The international lic had name already. This is where it is slightly different to your situation but hopefully you can get same outcome. Bear in mind, with business car, it might not be regoed under driver's name but a business. So you may have more luck contacting Westpac and say one of your employee damaged your property.

    • That's what I was thinking the company might be responsible here. Did you get the repairs done btw ?

      • Really - why the change of heart

A crook bank might have a crooked response. Not optimistic.

        😀

      • His insurer eventually got back to me 2 days after I got in touch with my insurer thinking he might deny it happened. I still continued via my insurer with not at fault claim and repairer said he has to respray both doors to make it match when only the single door had the damage. So far all good but many insurer do make you pay if you have claimed in the past or not as when I was getting quotes to see renewal amount were competitive.

  • Some of the responses here are ******* commical.

    • -3

As opposed to your useless comment?

      • +1

You see what I mean, SMH

  • +2

How bad is the damage? If the paint is intact a paintless repair might be an inexpensive option. Door dings are easy to fix as they can access the back of the panel via the window. My young fella put a ding in our 1 month old car with the door of our other car in the garage. Local smash repairer gave me the name of a guy who fixed it for around $50 from memory. Took him about 10min and I have not been able to find where the damage was since.

    • No paint damaged just the dent. That's awesome . Is this in Brisbane ? Could you share the name of the repairer ?

      • Repairer is in Newcastle unfortunately. Do a google search in your area and look at the reviews. The fellow I used has a 4.9 rating!

    • Hi Spurf, what city might this guy be in? (Asking for a friend!)

      • +1

        See 👆

  • +2

Did you manage to get a quote from a repairer? (Small dent repairs usually cost $100 to $200 for a fix, but you need to find someone who is an expert at fixing dents[cause some repairers can do a bad job])
If you don't mind me asking you. What is the make and model da car? (If its a expensive car like a new shiny Bimmer, Audi or a Tesla ) then its probably better to get it done from the official workshop since its a brand new car.
If the cost of repairs are way under the Excess cost then just pay to get it done if it bothering you too much.

  • +1

I'm sorry to hear your of pain. Last week I saw a woman with a newish Merc. bang her door onto a nice looking 4wd that was a good space away. She didn't even pull her door off the 4wd whilst she was loading. She couldn't care less. She just wanted her max. door opening. I was so tempted to stick my nose in.

    • +3

You should have. I always speak up if I see people ding other cars, as well as those lazy bones that leave trolleys in parking spaces and next to poles.

    • +1

You could have clicked the photo of the dinger who dinged the dingee with her car and rego and pasted a note on the windscreen of the dingee so they could follow it up with the dinger if they wanted to ;p

  • +6

You're wasting your time, carparks are basically the lawless wild west when it comes to insurance.

  • +2

Hi OP. Ask your "witness" if she/he is really willing to be your witness when contacted by your insurance company. If so, you can report the incident to your insurance company and it will contact your witness to confirm before claiming against the offender.

  • +9

i like how everyone is ok with the car door being damaged

    1. We should not normalize this behavior
    2. It's not ok to damage the door
    3. Carparks should not be a place you go to get your car damaged
    4. People work hard to get a car, just because you have a crappy corolla with dings and scratches doesn't give you the right to do the same to another car

OP i suggest you get a lte dashcam so you get a live feed everytime someone hits into your car or a 360 camera.

I have one going in my car very soon. Can risk it with the cars I have.

If you have the rego just make a police report and take it to insurance if its bad. They will chase it for you. They can even pull camera footage if needed

This may seem overboard but people need to be accountable for their actions.

    • +6

I agree 100%. Had a gutful of selfish, self absorbed people who live in their own world, do not respect others property and are not accountable for their actions. It is the trolleys that really shit me every time I go to the shops. If you can push a trolley to your car, bloody well put it back in the return bay where it belongs instead of causing a nuisance for others. The shops should be doing more to keep their trolleys under control, coin system is a good idea or some sort of app/QR code to keep those who use them accountable. Sick of having them parked against a wall or blocking spaces where I want to park and being dumped outside apartment buildings. Hardwired front and rear dashcam does provide good peace of mind and is worthwhile, but people also need to speak up when they see people do things like this. I have never hit another car door in my life.

      • Oh god that Triggers me as well. It's like 5 m away the trolley section..just return it..instead it's near cars on the driveway. Smh m

    • Same thought process. I keep my fingers outside the door so I don't smash someone else's car. Keeping care of my fingers of course. Some people like to keep cars nice. Better stay away from huge paking spaces !

    • Most, if not all insurers needs the address of other party for you to avoid an excess.

  • +5

This is why I bought 7k car

    • -2

      Weird flex, but ok.

      • +3

Not really a flex. I paid $3000 for my car, it has been super reliable, is a colour no one likes but I never get vaguely stressed about parking it or minor damage. I geniunely would have so much stress if I owned an expensive one.

    • A 7k car can still be a nicely maintained one..

    • You bought 7000 cars?

      • yes 7000 7k cars so he spent forty nine million!

        • hmm, math checks out so it seems legit to me
