Grade 2 willow pretty great for under $200! I picked up a new blade yesterday from Whack Sports, definitely worth a look for anyone looking for a decent price with their current sale.

Heh. How good were the bats in the 80s. I remember most of the tail enders used County for some reason.

      • +4

They were in the team kit bags.

      • How good were the bats in the 80s

        Accu-Drive
        Ultrabow or

  • I haven't bought a bat in a few decades. They don't need knocking in anymore?

    • +5

They might be machine knocked at factory, but if you want to keep it a while - knock it in.

    • +5

Still need to knock in the edges and toe……… but an extra hr of knocking in will help it out.

      • What's knocking in and why did/does it need to be done?

        • +3

Compresses the wood before use to reduce damage when facing full pace balls. Machines now use rollers to go over the face if the bat to replicate. Manually done with a special timber mallet, ball on a stick or ball in a footballnsock.

    • The bats are machine pressed only after oiling.
I would strongly suggest just oil the toe after buying for couple of nights.
Knocking still won't protect the toe.
Just oil the toe after couple of weeks again.
Check toe after first use and sand small cracks and oil.
Do this and bat will last for a very very long time.

I remember getting my first Kookaburra bat as a 7 or 8 year old and being told to knock it in. I think I used the face of the bat on the top of the stump to do that, absolutely trashed the bat. I was holding back tears for 6 months.

    • If the bails keep rocking, don't bother knocking (in)

  • Where are these bats made in? And this so called English willow - is it sourced from the United Kingdom?

    • Made in India (possibly everything of Gray Nicholls)

      • Aren't the grade 1 bats made in Melbourne?

    • Gray Indian Nicholls.
the quality is good most of the times and these are machine pressed. Not knocked like old ways so linseed oil is your friend.

  • The wood yes……. hand made in India…..

I have this bat and used it this season. It's a good bat and at this price a must have for any grade cricketer. I have scored 80*, 150*, 110, 276, 45 and 101 so far this season.

When I got 276 I was hitting most of them out of the middle and they were flying to and over they boundary. I am currently the leading run scorer for A grade and on track to score the most runs in a season.

    • +20

Could you replace Marcus Harris please?

    • +6

Can't find anyone with that record on MyCricket

      • Probably 'A' grade in the western districts.

        • +2

My mum could score 100 in the western districts

      • Yea I was in his team, scored 275 using a stump… who needs bats.

    • @ozb101

Any UK blood? With those stats, you could be an England opener

  • +1

These bats usually weigh between 2lb 9 oz to 2lb 10oz. It's got a nice pickup though.
But please knock it in and put a toe guard/shoe goo on. Can't believe bats this price come without a toe guard!

    • or a butler??

  • +4

I am not a grade cricketer.

I haven't actually played cricket in over five years.

But I so want to buy this just so I have an excuse (at the price!) to relive summertime childhood years and have a decent "Gray Nics" on hand the next time a game breaks out over the holidays.

I'm sure if my struggling parents ever had the means to buy me something other than a Target or KMart bat every three or four years, you better believe things would have been different. I would have gone pro in a heart beat. I'd be makin' millions of dollars and living in a big old mansion somewhere, soaking it up in a hot tub with my soulmate…

    • +4

You really need that Gray Nics to power those tennis ball 4's into the backyard fence.

      • Perish the thought…

How much you wanna bet I could hit them for six over them mountains?

Will these be good enough to fight zombies?

      Better tweet Shaun.

  • Junior Bat (size 6) also 50% off. $99.xx
It mentions English Willow grade 1

    • Where does it say grade 1 mate? I am curious but couldnt find that.

      • On the small sticker at front where it says Ultra 800.
At another place (plastic wrapper) mentions grade 2. :)

        • Haha

Well already ordered one, so doesn't make any difference now. But thanks for replying mate.

    • How do you know it’s size 6?

      • I bought that from store and it had the label on top. Of the handle. That's for junior Bat.

        • Awesome, thankyou

      • I picked the bat today from knox vic. It is 6.
        Confirmed.

As a side note, the Aussie made bats are apparently top notch - most of the Aussie team use them and cover them with stickers of the sponsors. Worth looking around and supporting local manufacturing (the 4 odd local bat makers are apparently struggling, even with good pricing).

    • I had a kooka ridgeback when I was a young lad, they still the bat of choice??

      • +1

Nah. They were around when I was playing in the early 2000s too, not very popular from memory. They had a strange shape, the bubble was preferred.

        • I used to find them great, light pick up and great sweet spot, but then I wasn't picky with bats, tended to score runs regardless. Now I'd be lucky to hit a glide through third slip for one.

        • I recall RT Ponting popularised the ridgeback - but the bubble was, as I recall, by far, the most used blade in u16's / 18's circa 2002

          • +1

@super8: Ponting never used it though, he always used custom bats and had the ridgeback stickers placed on it.

In fact I don't recall any of the pros using that specific bat.

    • Agreed: shout out to Cooper Cricket at Northgate, [BNE].

  • +1

I could pickup and fence post and score more than Joe Burns in the BBL.

  • The best way to preserve the Toe of the bat is by not whacking it on the ground, especially on synthetic pitches which have concrete under the nylon carpet.

  • what doe the 800 refer to? there are also 2000, 1100, 600 versions of this bat?

    • Bats are graded (mostly cosmetically) by the manufacturers to determine their performance. The higher numbers will be for higher graded bats. Higher graded bats usually have more grains visible/thinner space between grains, straighter grains, less blemishes/knots showing.

It is expected that a higher graded bat would have a better “ping”, i.e. speed of return/sound the ball makes when hit, and a larger sweet spot, but it’s not always the case. It is possible to have a poor performing grade 1 bat and an excellent performing grade 3 bat. Willow being a natural product, it’s the luck of the draw.

Bat prices can jump a lot between grades. The best quality grade 1 bats are $1200+

  • Gray Nichols bats are graded extremely generously.

Do yourself a favour and get a JP Gavan bat.

  • Don’t get too excited until you have it in hand. These bats aren’t the same model you find in cricket stores.

The bat profile doesn’t seem to resemble the current Ultra model bats.

They look to be left over stock from previous years that have had current Ultra stickers applied.

Seems most of them are also quite heavy in weight up around the ~2lb12+ region.

    • It does say "Rebel exclusive" when a Google search suggests other companies sold the Ultra 800 in 2019/20, so you might be right.

    • Seems like they are out of stock.
Any other decent grade bats that are value for money? This seemed like a good deal

  • Can anyone confirm the size of the bat if it is SM or SH? Can't see a choice online, none Available in the stores nearby.

    • +1

      SH

      • Thanks, that saves me ordering online as I am looking for SM.
        Cheers

    Hi Guys,

I got one bat from this deal, but to my disappointed the bat has come in 3.5lbs where as on the handle it says 2'10. Also on the edges there is a small rotten hole in the wood, which they have glued another piece of wood on top. I see all stores are out of stock and the deal is no longer available on their website. Would they replace me with another bat or refund?

I really would like a replacement since it was a good deal.

    • Try your luck. Take it instore and pick out a replacement, see what they say. Worst case, they say no.

      • They said no store has the stock and they cant ask GN to replace it. Looks like they ran the promo to clear the stock that they were unable to sell.
They gave a rebel gift card, I never buy from rebel anyways.

        • There ya go. 3.5 is an outrageous weight. At least you got a voucher. Could be able to flip it on marketplace for a $5 discount or something.

    • Looks like there a few up FB for the same reason, one I saw was 350.
I got one and the weight is 1.25kg or 2"12 which is ok for me. 3.5lb is massive

  • So looks like I am not alone.
I did buy mine and its suppose to be 2lb 70z to 2lb 10oz instead mine weighs 3lb .05 oz. So yeah it is a heavy bat. no issues with the wood or grains . happy with that.
No complaint about the quality but at that weight good luck being able to play longer innings.

will be returning to the shop unless somebody still is looking for one.

    Cheers
    Srini
