    Seems decent

  • QLC drive, but with a 500gb slc cache. Not bad for the price

    • That's when the drive is empty, we do not know the situation when the SSD is half filled and closely fully filled. I am somewhat interested to know the half filled situation. Unfortunately, most reviews don't test that.

BPC are also selling the Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB for $275 with free shipping, for anyone considering a drive for gaming, go with the samsung, its MLC drive with better random reads and writes, performs better in games, slower read and write speeds yes, but not by much. https://www.bpctech.com.au/catalog/product/view/id/6332/?gcl…

Far cry 6 free with this ssd too

    • 970 Evo Plus is TLC, not MLC. The new revision of 970 Evo Plus uses a new controller so it has a larger dynamic turbo write, but once that's exhausted the actual NAND speed is inferior to the older batch. However, if you are able to have workload that benefits from that dynamic turbo write (which is the case for most people), then the new batch actually feels faster.

The price drop of 970 Evo Plus is due to the use of more cost effective NAND flash.

Also, don't underestimate these PCIe gen 4 entry level SSDs. The added bandwidth, improved controller and larger dynamic SLC cache (25% / 500GB when the drive is empty), if you keep sufficient free space AND you don't really have very heavy workload, they do perform better than PCIe gen 3 SSDs. Sure, the QLC NAND raw write speed is ugly, but do you re-install / re-copy all games to that SSD all the time? Obviously, if you don't have a device that supports PCIe gen 4, then don't bother going for PCIe gen 4 SSDs.

      • I guess the BPC product page is incorrect then because it states that the storage memory is 3-bit MLC

That's Samsung's annoying way to quote NAND flashes. It's one thing that a lot of people (mostly tech people) wanting Samsung to change.

Instead of TLC, Samsung stats 3-bit MLC. Instead of QLC, Samsung states 4-bit MLC. Technically, that's correct, but it is confusing to consumers who don't know the full definition of those terms.

          • @netsurfer: You are right, although it probably makes no difference to me, I also bought it for the Far Cry 6 promotion

            • @Neso5: When you received your SSD, have a look at the box. Most likely, you will receive a newer batch. The box will not look like what they put on the listing (i.e. horizontal look of the SSD). The newer one has a more vertical look (kinda more like 980 and 980 pro packaging).

The newer batch uses Samsung Elpis Controller, instead of older Phoenix controller. The NAND flash chips are also different. Due to the controller change, Samsung changed the packaging.

              • @netsurfer: It even says on the product page BPC used that it comes with the Phoenix controller, I’m going to be pretty annoyed if I receive it and it isn’t the same

@Neso5: You want the older batch? Do you copy large files non stop a lot? In general use, the newer controller (which is in the same class as 980 Pro, except with PCIe gen 4 disabled) and the dynamic turbo write are better. Also, the improved random read/write. For example, if you simply run crystal diskmark, the new batch has much better figures in every type of test (due to it mostly tests the SLC cache and the controller).

Also, be practical. Sure, we might have multiple SSDs to run these nasty sustained write tests. However, that involves 2 fast NVMe SSDs and generally purposely copy blu-ray or UHD blu ray ISOs (or your 4K video files - and no, not those hacky, compressed ones some people downloaded illegally from the Internet).

        • 1-bit = SLC
          2-bit = MLC
          3-bit = TLC
          4-bit = QLC

      • Given this is cheaper than the Evo Plus and it's Gen 4 - should I get this even if I have a Mobo that only supports Gen 3? Given it's backwards compatible, would you expect the throttled speeds to still be comparable to the Evo Plus?

I'll be upgrading to an X570 in the new year which will support Gen 4, so I'll be able to get full use of it then.

    • Far cry 6 Promo ends today i think

and on top of that samsung Ignored all my Emails

  • The new record of cheapest SSD ($/GB) for PS5 (due to PS5 just checking the SSD is PCIe gen 4). Pity I already bought another SSD months ago.

This one has the heatsink. No experience on Corsair warranty, but it is now a public listed company.
