YES!! I was in dire need but with a coupon code, I couldn't do it. Thank you!

Yes!! About to run out but needed a coupon. Yay

These guys any good? I see lots of posts but not many reviews.

    • +2

very good, strong and bold flavours. love the sumatra blend

      • Tip - If you like Sumatra you would probably like Enterprise also…..both great beans.

        • Thanks, I like strong but with a little sweetness / chocolate. This one by Blackstar was previously my go to. Wondering which would be the equivalent from Airjo.

    • @ Dealymcdealface - I usually go with Enterprise but I currently have Sumatra in the grinder and it is tasting good.

Took a few shots to dial in the new beans - Sumatra requires a slightly coarser grind for me - but they are good now.

I get a nice smooth full body taste out of these beans, with minimal after-effect. (Some beans leave a “coating” feeling in my mouth)

    • It obviously comes down to personal taste but for me I used to get all my beans from Merlo, after jumping on a previous offer and trying the Airjo Twilight blend they are now my new go to supplier.

      Postage was very fast also.

  • Coffee noob here. Can someone explain how this compares against $15/kg beans at Aldi/Coles/Woolworths?

    • +3

      It's worth the extra money.

I've decided next year I'm only buying 500g at a time. The second half is never as good as the first half. Maybe I need to get into freezing.

      • +6

Consider getting an air tight container that you can pull the air out, keep my 1kg beans great! Airscape sells some good ones- a bit pricey but well worth it.

        • +2

Yeah I put mine in a pop box and refill as I need.

        • +1

I have Airscape containers. They do a pretty good job at extending the time, but maybe I need to up my coffee drinking!

      • +2

freezing is so easy. my airtight container only holds 500g and i freeze the rest, then when needed i sit out to bring to room temp before opening

    • It would make a world of difference if you use an unpressurised portafilter for your espresso. Otherwise you probably won't notice tbh.

    • Coffee quickly degrades after roasting, the beans you buy from Aldi/Coles/Woolworths are likely months old by the time they get to you and will pale in comparison to the beans you can buy from any local roaster.

  • Is it worth stocking up on more than one bag?

    • +8

It's okay, didn't knock my socks off but wasn't offensive either.

      • +4

Same here. Wasn’t amazing I usually order at www.siciliacoffee.com 1Kg starts at $17. I always buy 3kg and they only charge $5 for delivery. Use code CHEERS10 or THANKS10 to get 10% off.

        • +1 Sicilia

        • Got one of their samplers. See how it goes!

      • +2

Yep. Mediocre but not in a bad way although I regret buying 1kg as it lacked the bite I was hoping for and got tired of it pretty quickly.

        • Same here,I order 500gm occasionally as a stopgap while I wait for my normal monthly order from 2cracks in WA. Find the Sumatra blend to be pretty average to be truthful, decent enough cup but…just nothing to excite.

  • Hi rep, any similar deals for darker roast varieties?

  • All others blend are at 25% off exp Monday 3/1/22

  • +10

Just got into my bag of beans from a couple of weeks ago, okay for the price. Nothing spectacular.

    • +5

i have not finished the 1kg i ordered a few weeks ago. cant agree more with you. will not order from them again.

      • +3

Same. Will probably try another and then rake a call

    • +3

I’d have to agree. Isn’t complex enough in the flavour profile for me (I drink black only). It’s not bad by any means but if you’re after something interesting this isn’t really it. With milk it would be fine.

    • I've had the Sumatra - and it didn't push the right buttons for me. I suspect that the roast level is more suited to filter-style coffee while I was after espresso.

      Live and learn.

OTOH, I've bought 'Enterprise' pre-ground and had it sent to a child interstate. That has gone down well for his espresso use.

I think that the lesson is to check that the roast level matches your intended use.

  • +3

Are these beans acidic / taste sour? I got some last time and couldn't drink them.

    • +9

Can't say I enjoyed the last batch. Had a particularly unpleasant burnt/bitter aftertaste that lingered long after the coffee was finished. If I buy from them again, I definitely won't be getting the Sumatran beans.

      • +1

Agree, I don't rate them. Not great when you prefer the ALDI dark roast back up been over this.
Lime Blue seem to be my go to

    • +2

Yeah my first time I bought a 1kg bag and it wasn’t to my tastebuds. Not sure if it’s worth buying again incase my bag was an odd one.

      • +3

I was worried when I read all the positive..

I order the Sumatra as well and found it rather weak compared to the other brand I normally go for.

But might not be a fair comparison as the other brand is a very private establishment and they only do a very small quantity of roast per week.

But as they say, you always think the grass is greener..

    • +1

I found them quite acidic, too much for my taste - though I only drink black, so with milk/sugar I imagine it would be ok

  • I'm still using my noob Woolies Vittoria beans with my new Breville Dual Boiler that I got a few days ago. Which beans do you guys recommend getting going forward?

    • +1

Pablo’s and Rusty’s or Sicilia Coffee are better.

      • +1

        +1 Sicilia

      • +1

Just had a look at their site. Is there a particular blend you'd recommend?

        • I like most of them but I would go for their specials (code doesn’t work for specials) or the ones starting from $20.

  • Thanks have purchased a bag to try!

  • Bought these during the last sale.

Found I needed a much fine grind to get a decent Crema and taste compared to other beans. But once tuned in, the flavour was nice.

For those with a rancilio, 4 on the grinder is the sweet spot.

    • 4 on the grinder doesn’t go through. Too fine.

      • For most beans, yes. These ones, for whatever reason, needed the fine grind

        • Strange. Fair enough.

          • @Thrifty Dan: Hmmm. I use a Rancilio as well - and I do need to vary the grind slightly when changing to different beans. Never taken it that low before. Just had to go up to '7' for 'Coffee On Cue' Black Friday blend - the puck was too dry and crumbly at 5-6.

FWIW, I'm using a Silvia too.

  • Does anyone own oracle touch and use this bean? Can you please advise your grind setting?
    Thanks

    • +1

I use 19 on mine but i have found comparing grind settings is difficult as they are calibrated differently

    • Breville Barista Express, inner burr 3, outer grinder setting 4 to 6 (6 when they are brand new beans, 5 or 4 once they are few weeks old).

All coffee machines differ though, even if they are the same model. Use any guidance on here as a starting point only and dial it in.

  • How do these compare to Undercover Roasters? I've tried both the WHT and BLK and was quite happy with them.

    • +1

My experience is that WHT and BLK both produce a better espresso. Just finished a kilo of BLK this week and happy to buy again.

I was disappointed with Sumatra for espresso - in hindsight, it might have been a better choice for filter-style coffee. Others seem to like it though.

  • Enjoyed last batch and ordered another one, thanks OP

  • It would be the first time I am buying from these guys.

    Best beans for cappuccinos?

    • Save your money.

      • +1

Spend your money! But choose a darker roast for a decent milk-based espresso.

    • +2

I like Enterprise blend for general milk based drinks.

  • No location mentioned on website?
I'm never going to order beans if I don't know where the roaster is based as this will impact the delivery time.

    • They are in QLD. Delivery is super fast. I have ordered about 10 times now and usually receive my beans in 1 or 2 days in Sydney.

I ordered my latest 1kg on the 29/12, they have a roast date of 29/12 and arrived this morning, 31/12.

      • Why wouldn’t you get your beans from Pablo’s and Rusty’s being in NSW?

    • I ordered "express post" from Melbourne and it still took 10 days to arrive. Presumably no fault of the seller but something to keep in mind if you're based in VIC.

  • +2

Didn't much like the taste or even if it said high caffeine, didn't feel anything. I'd rather would have returned it. If its ground beans atleast it should have caffeine particularly when it says high caffeine.
    Disappointed .

  • +1

130 upvotes so far, but general consensus in the comments is these are pretty average…

Don't know what to make of it?

I'm tempted to try…are the upvotes just based on price alone??

    • I don't think that it is a BAD coffee - but, IMHO, it isn't a good choice for espresso-based coffee. I'd choose a darker roast (eg. Enterprise) or use this for filter-style coffees.

    • -1

Just skip and go on like most people here.

    • +1

I'm a bit baffled by the upvotes as well. My last order was "express post" yet took 10 days to arrive, and the beans had a distinctly unpleasant, burnt aftertaste.

I tried every combination of grind but could not improve the flavor. Wasted a lot of coffee in the process, though :/

  • NICE COFFEE BEANS! I usually only drink Compos coffee beans ( WWS 1kg around $45), tried the Aldi ones (1kg $20), which is a big NO for me, found the Sumatra blend, ($30/kg after discount), then I became a repeating customer with Airjo.

  • +3

My first order was great but the last order few weeks back was definitely burnt, similar to comments above :(

    • So previous orders weren't as bad as the late Nov/early Dec batch? To be brutally honest, those were the worst coffee beans I've ordered online.

Glad to hear others had the same experience with that nasty burnt flavor (not to mention the "express" post taking 10 days to arrive).

  • Any idea when the next deal is coming?

  • Mine's already out for delivery today. Melbourne -> Brisbane overnight is pretty amazing nowadays.
