I think the all time low price that had over 100 votes was in November when it was ($242 AUD incl $10 coupon).

Ozbargain Member Jasswolf's edited description here:

'You will need an amp to get the most out of it, and the better the amp, the better this sounds because of how low the distortion is. This is overall a dynamic driver headphone, with only old school AKG open backs besting it's distortion characteristics around this price point, but they trade a lot of timbre and tonality for imaging and sound stage width.'

Users here far more experienced than me can advise on some $50 - $500 Amp / Dac or Combo's to go with this if you are a total freshy. I personally am going from a HD598 to this HD6XX.

For a while I didn't think I'd need something like this because I had a bunch of expensive wireless headphones/headsets. But after buying this and using for 6 months I'm extremely happy with them and recommended to many people.

These are wired headphones and ideally should be paired with an AMP + DAC. I originally had these plugged into my Soundblaster X3 but I got Schiit Modi + magni stack and they really shine.

Music never sounded better and also gaming is on next level when it comes to position

    • i have the soundblaster e3 and while it does drive the 6xx just fine i wonder if i need to upgrade to schiit stack? please give a quick impression. cheers

      • +1

My sound blaster X3 added a lot more white noise like light crackling. On the schiit stack it was super clear and noticeably better sound (subjective).

Also I feel like the driverless schiit stack gave more spatial awareness in fps games compared to the X3.

The schiit stack definitely gets louder but I doubt anyone would want to listen to the headphones that loud.

Lastly I haven't had to deal with the X3 randomly crashing and not working properly with Windows.

The X3 does have its pros. Cheaper, can have headphones and speakers plugged in at same time and press one button to switch (I worked around this issue with my stream deck). Also the X3 has microphone input and my schiit stack doesn't, schiit does make a gaming AMP/DAC combo called the HEL that does have the mic input.

    • I would love to get into there but can’t stand headphones, my ears get hot and uncomfortable and I hate the feeling of something resting on my hair. I’ve been using the mdr 1am2 which has been more comfortable then the previous one I tried but still prefer earphones since they are more comfortable

Open headphones are better if you get hot ears. MDR-1AM2 are closed, these are open.

        • Oh I see, I will give open headphones a try. Thank you!

    • thanks. i am looking forward to headphones and dac/amp.

Great to see the price drop on these!

If you’re looking for voice chat headsets, PC38X is also discounted to US$129.
Probably the best sounding headphones with mic installed from factory in my opinion.

Got mine from last deal, great upgrade from the 598's which incidentally coincides with the post above. Only paired it with a Sybasonic atm (the better one), but will upgrade soon. The new K5 from Fosi Audio looks to be a great 'gaming' AMP/DAC combo with decent parts, but would need to test it.

  • How these compare to phillips X2HR?

    • Bass is turned down, smaller soundstage(?)

  • +3

These are amazing for acoustic, vocals and classical music. But not my favourite for rock (electric guitars etc.). They are also not suitable as a gaming headphone for directional sound. The soundstage is tiny and in FPS games you will only be able to hear if something is on your right, your left or straight ahead, nothing in between.

    • What other headphones you used for gaming better? I have been able to pin point people but curious if there's anything better

I'm looking for a headphone, haven't found one yet, but found this quite helpful.

      • People rave on the AKG K7xx or other 7 series due to the massive stage that it has, but I feel that closed back cans tends to work better for me due to more focused sound. I’ve tried the PC38X too but I’m not a fan of the clamping force, but it’s definitely one of the best sounding “gaming” set.
My favourite so far is the Beyer DT770, which I used for mastering and film editing too. Very versatile cans and not too exxy..

        • I recently borrowed a friend's DT770 and while I won't comment extensively on the sound quality (other than that it was really nice and made me realise I needed to upgrade!) I found the sound isolation was brilliant, but problematic if you play games where you need to talk with mic and want to hear yourself at the same time.

My current close backs allow a lot of noise to enter, but the DT770s were so good that I couldn't hear a flatmate standing behind me shouting my name. Not sure if that's a problem for you piupiupiu, but thought I should alert others.

Not sure if a solution is to reroute the mic back into the headphones so they function as a monitor?

Meanwhile, there's a lonely pair of 700x on sale at amazon at the moment. Seems pretty cheap, but reviews saying lack of bass puts me off:

@huggsymersh: Perhaps the DT990 would suit you then, I have both and prefer the open one.

            • @s1Lence: Thanks I did consider it, but ultimately I think my experience of the DT770 suggests that I probably wouldn't enjoy the Beyerdynamic tuning long term. I could appreciate the quality, but just the flavour wasn't to my taste.

    Thanks for the quote!

hey jasswolf, i've been researching headphones for the past few weeks and enjoyed your knowledge and contributions whenever it pops up! I've learnt a lot, well as much as you can without actually listening. Care to share your thoughts on my dilemma, if you have the time and inclination?

If you like your vocals and a natural timbre, this is still pretty much the best headphones you can get for any money in those regards.

Only one thing I dislike about the Sennheiser HD 6XX series is the clamping force, which feels quite tight and does give me a bit of a headache after extensive use. But bare in mind, I have a pretty big noggin compared to average person.

    • +1

This. Been stretching my 6XX for quite a while now, still clamps like crazy. maybe I need a couple more books stacked to stretch it even more..

    • Yep I am finding the clamos a bit tight too

  • I live right next to the main road, inner city, 1 block away from a very popular destination and I sometimes wear my Beyerdynamic COP without any audio playing just to get away from the noise while using the computer. Will I hate myself for going from closed-back to open-back? I've been lusting for these headphones for years but the outside noise has been the biggest deal breaker for me.
My main uses are gaming/discord, music: basic bitch techno, indie pop. Currently using Yamaha AG03 to drive the COP's and a studio mic. AG03 puts out 150ohm balanced, and 120ohm unbalanced.

Yes you will hate the leak, unfortunately.. but do get it anyway while it’s discounted like this, and maybe sell it if you don’t like it, it holds its value pretty well I think. The itch will always be unscratched otherwise ;)

will drop ever do Focal clears?

    • Probably not, as it potentially undermines their Focal collab: the Elex, which is basically an Elear with Clear pads.

  • Regarding a Dac/Amp, I am personally ordering the TOPPING DX3PRO+ to go with the HD6XX. It's $265 AUD delivered from Aliexpress. It is a new release so not many reviews but the first initial reviews seem to say it's very good for a budget combo unit. Unless someone has experience and advise on another Dac/Amp unit…..
