Dangerous product for most - not worth the risk.

    • +1

You can’t just say that and not tell us why.

    • +1

What's the risk compared to a normal lighter?

      • I'd argue these are safer. There's no gas that can leak, and they have a cap.

It'll hurt if you touch the arcs, and give you a small burn. But so does any lighter.

    • +3

I'm not familiar with this product, please enlighten me.

    • +1

tell us what you"ve heard sunshine…

  • My two are still working great after a year (was $14.39 for the 'F12 cross plasma' style in Dec 2020).

  • +1

“Oh yeah, I forgot I had one of these”.

This is for anyone considering buying this and is my reaction when I saw this deal.

    • Do you use a normal lighter or matches instead?

      • +5

        I rub two sticks together.

    Say no to spamazon

    • +1

Hi just curious why you don't like Amazon? Curious. Thanks.

      • -2

Because Amazon US workers are treated like slaves perhaps?

        • Except being paid an average starting wage of $18 per hour for their work (ie $3 per hour above the level being campaigned for), not being property and being able to be bought or sold, only working rostered shifts, and being free to leave at any time?
Your comment minimises slavery by this comparison.

      • +6

No problem with amazon. The problem is with cheap Chinese drop shipped crap that is non stopped spammed here every week. It’s not a bargain.

        • +1

Are you suggesting that Amazon are spamming you, or just that you are besmirching their name because so many OzBargain members find deals via their platform and post them on this website which you voluntarily visit?

        • Thanks. One positive that I have found with Amazon is that they are able to get things to me super fast (e.g. 2 days) compared to Aus post. Agree that often the products they sell are built to a low price.

  • Does the battery go flat if you don't use it? Some electronic devices have a small parasitic current draw that flattens batteries when they are off (we have some lanterns like that). If it does I imagine every time I went to use it the battery would be flat

    • +1

Um, that happens with all rechargeable batteries/items, it's part of the chemistry!
Leave you phone off for a month and the same thing happens ;)

      • +1

that's not necessarily true - some lithium batteries have very very low self discharge so if you have them disconnected they keep their charge for a long time. Depends on the cell chemistry and, more importantly, what is connected to it.

        • Of which they are marked and sold as "Low Self Discharge", it's not the standard for rechargeable batteries …

Have a look at Panasonic Enerloops, sold and marketing as "85% charge after 1 year", which actually implies a self discharge of 15% over 12 months (for that cell chemistry even with ZERO use and attached to ZERO circuitry) - and they would be the best of the best of "low self discharge" (meaning standard rechargeable chemistry will be MUCH worse than 15% per year)

      • your phone battery discharges because it's still on when you turn it off. Low current devices last forever: watches, D's, etc

        • +1

Take the battery out of your phone, it still discharges when not connected …

    Whats the coupon?
    Shows $31 for me

I'll bite at $5 about all it's worth.

  • +1

One thing that's annoying with the plasma lighter is the lid design, it blocks off the light, e.g. I couldn't even light up a scented candle with my lighter because it's blocked by the lid

    • yeah i been trying to find one just for candles too. They tend to have more access area like a tick at the end style/

      • +1

You can get long handle ones which are suitable for that.

  • +1

These things are crap. Bought one last year. Rarely use it. I wouldn't bother.

    • If you rarely use it, then you are the problem, not that the product is crap.
Same as a lot of people here buying all these OzBargain deals but never use the things they bought.

      • +3

I'd say the reasoning is: It's crap, so they don't use it.

But I'm only saying that because.. that's what they said.

      • The only thing I've found it particularly useful for is lighting the kids sparklers

These are on AliExpress for around $10 each.

        • ROFL!

          $5.61 for a different unit, plus $6.03 shipping + $1.16 for GST = $12.80.

With an ambitious projected delivery date of 8th March.

30c more than this deal and only two months slower.

          Super neg…

          • -1

@UncleRico: It's $2.19 cheaper. Not sure how you do maths lol

No need to get so defensive mate. This site is about bargains. Not fastest delivery.

            • -1

@Squirmy Squid: LOL! In the midst of your mirroring, preytell which part did you find defensive? The bit where I included the GST you omitted, the part where I cited the postage charges you conveniently excluded, or the extra two months delivery time for the $12.80 unit you claim is a better bargain that the one cited by in this deal which can be had for less than $12.50?

Either way, you do you. You're the one evaluating bargains and dishing out negs for an item that's cheaper and faster delivered than your quoted alternative. Please be sure to post a deal and let us know how your AliExpress unit works if you ever receive it…

              • -2

@UncleRico: Nothing was excluded. I posted a link, as requested.

But if you want to talk exclusions, the Amazon one is $7.99 delivery for those without prime. Making the Ali item more than $10 cheaper.

Again, the item I posted is cheaper and was also 1 example that I found in about 30 seconds of searching.

I'm not going to try to educate you anymore.
Like you said.. "you do you".

                • -1

@Squirmy Squid: Try to rewrite it any way you like, but your price excluded GST and delivery. The OP made it clear that Prime was required for $0 delivery, whereas you lied about an unobtainable $5.61 item. Hence $12.80 > $12.50

As you'll discover when school returns later this month…

    • And yet these locally supplied ones, inclusive of GST, replete with Amazon warranty and a 99% chance of being delivered compared to the c. 66% I had for low cost items from AliExpress last year have the temerity to charge a whole $12.49?

You are entitled to your negative vote. But I think your entitlement is very negative…

      • lol ok. Neg me for finding the same item cheaper elsewhere. Cool.

        • -1

No need to get upset about it. The OP didn't tell you how cool you were for negging his deal because you might find it cheaper in China. Eventually…
