I was benchmarking this drive with BlackMagic to test out the various USB/TB3 ports on my dock and discovered its read/write rates would drop to atrocious levels, eg 80MB/s instead of 800MB/s. Tom’s Hardware only shows the performance halving once the cache is full, so I am guessing the thermal throttling accounts for the rest of the reduction.
FWIW running a macOS Monterey VM off this drive seems to be fine.
M1? T1's true sustained write (NAND instead of SLC cache) is around 120MB/s. Given M1's USB issue, I guess 80MB/s could be the case. I don't think USB 3.1 gen 2 is a great idea for M1, but it is cost effective.
@netsurfer: I didn’t know about M1’s issue but I have an i7. Is T1 referring to the Samsung drive?
Reading my notes at the time, the slowest I got was actually 16MB/s (copying a 100GB VM took over 10mins over TB3!! Though it would have topped out on a USB 10Gbps port anyway)
Maybe I’ll script up some test to measure its decline over time, perhaps with temp data

The older T5, at half the rated speed, was actually much better at maintaining it for both read and write.
The 1TB for $149 is a better deal. 100% more capacity for 50% more money.

Not really, they produce similar amount of heat under constant write / read. I've never felt it uncomfortably hot as it appears to be according to those articles. Warm, but not hot at all for both models.
T7 does require higher power than T5 (1.5A vs 0.8A) however.

Should be USB 3.2 Gen.2 (10Gbps) under the new USB naming system, which is mid-tier (5Gbps Worst, 20Gbps Best) for Gen 2. Therefore it would have been USB-C 3.1 under old system if anyone is still confused.
Don't know why, but can't find the current (ends today I think), Coles giftcards with flybuys points, effectively 10% off for eBay and Amazon with 5 card limit; this will improve both eBay plus and Amazon value.
