Can I use this as a wifi extender. Looking for something to improve wifi coverage on my Optus Nokia 5g home internet router?

    • +1

afaik, most of the unfi access point can be used to expand the wifi coverage, via wired or uplink (wireless). They have pros and cons. Do your own research to pick which one suits you.

i have U6-LR and U6-Lite and use them together to expand the coverage around my home.

This is designed to be mounted on your ceiling, with a cable going into your router. Don't use wifi extenders in general. They just make things worse

      • Well technically not directly into the router. Either a PoE adaptor or a PoE switch.

    • +1

Sort of. It’s going to have to plug into your router and is likely to have better antennas than it does. However it’s not an extender as such.

The UAP‑AC‑LR would be better for range

Thanks, so better to disable the routers internal wifi & connect one of these long range APs to one of the LAN ports.

If you’re having coverage issues a mesh system is really the way to go mate. Ubiquiti is more enthusiast-grade, take a look at the TP-Link Deco M5 if you just want to plug it in and start working.

          • +1

@MrMaestro: Agreed, Ubiquiti leans a little more on the enthusiast side. For something that is easy to just plug and play, you may consider getting one of those TP-Link mesh (e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/675817) and disabling the wifi from the Optus Nokia Router.

        • You can have a wireless data uplink to another access point so if you buy two of these then you're able to mesh them together. AP#1 is connected via ethernet to your router and AP#2 is just getting power and gets the data via AP#1.

          • @e1ghtgundam: Since they are going to have to be plugged into ethernet anyway why would you bother with wireless data uplink which is slower and less reliable?

            • @AwesomeAndrew: In case they can't run a data line or if it's too much effort to do so. It'll be slower but at least it's better than nothing.

        • If you've got a bad router and your house isn't big then I'd say 100% yes. Otherwise what the others are saying works too.

  • Does anyone know how to stop these from losing their config settings when powered off and on again?

I've got 2 of them at my mum's place driven off a POE switch, however if it ever gets knocked being under the stairs and loses power, the APs reboot and come back up losing a lot of the settings I've put on it, including specific channels rather than auto etc.

    • Have you updated the firmware?

    • +3

That's not meant to happen, since you have 2 of them I can assume that its highly unlikely that both are faulty. How did you set them up? What controller are you using?

    • +1

Listen to the 2 blokes above and then report back. Some people here are helpful as much as possible.

Ubiquiti have (and continue to) release/d questionable firmware "/" and it's possible-probable you are using one of those revisions.

    • Very odd, mine have never done this. Have you installed the controller software on a computer on the network?

    • Do you have a controller setup?

  • Hey Guys, first time commenter so please don’t flame me. I think this deal is cheaper @ $133.45 with code PLUSTGA: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ubiquiti-U6-LITE-UniFi-Wi-Fi-6-L…

    • I believe both sellers titan_gear and Wireless1 have it at the same price.

[eBay Plus] Ubiquiti UniFi U6-LITE Wi-Fi 6 Dual Band Access Point $133.45

  • Does anyone know when the U6 pro will come out? And what are the benefits?

    • U6-Pro has 4x4 radios instead of 2x2 on the Lite, and also has Wifi 6 on the 2.4Ghz radios, rather than just on the 5Ghz like the U6-Lite and the U6-LR.

As for release dates - it’s already released in the US but supply is extremely tight so I wouldn’t hold your breath. Chip supply chains are still munted, and I suspected they’ll try and make global releases alongside the UDM SE, which is still in early access betas. I’m banking on sometime in March, but won’t be surprised if it’s closer to mid-year.
