These have been featured many times on bargain but my experience is bad with them.
    Would not recommend them.

    • +2

What’s the reasoning for not recommending them?

      • +16

On my one, it doesn't seem to hold the plugs in very well at all, they kinda just fall out unless they're in the right position. I wouldn't buy it again.

        • +6

I've got 4 of these (bought at different times) and when you push the plugs in firmly, they're pretty well locked in there - perhaps I just got lucky (for once)?

          • @RichardMelbourne: Maybe. I didn't notice it until recently. Maybe shit springs or something tensioning the internal pins that give over time?

          • @RichardMelbourne: I own 2 of these and as others have said, you do need to push the plugs in firmly. Pretty much use your full force and it should click. Then it will be secure and work perfectly. So I recommend this when it's set and forget plugs (E.g behind the TV or for computer + peripherals).

        • +1

I have 2. I find you have to be very firm with pushing the plug in but once it's in, it's in. If people are hearing cracking the plug is definitely not all the way in.

      • +7

Cheap plastic dents and scratches are easy around plug entry, but worse I had one completely short circuit with sparks and smoke. Was very scary. I'd spend more on a quality product and that is coming from someone who would prefer to be a cheapskate.

        • +1

Both of mine trip circuits easily, and they’re only powering low power devices

      • +5

Mine crackles when in use and I’ve been zapped by something that was plugged into it.

        • +2

Yep both mine that I bought crackle :/

    • +8

Same here, cheap plastic and poorly made. Stay away from these.

      • +1

Why do you not down vote the deal

        • +2

Agreed, I wouldn't have bought this if I had fully read the comments. I didn't bother to read too much as there was no negative votes.

If it is so bad, and you feel like telling everyone, then you should be voting appropriately

    • Agreed - the features are good, but they don’t hold plugs well, and the USB ports are only useful for very low power things like USB lucky waving paw cats

    • +3

Wow, thought this was Ozbargain's favourite Surge Protector. First time I've seen so much negative feedback. I bought two of these years ago and they've been working without any noticeable issues. Bought another 2 recently for future use - maybe I should test them.

      • +1

Also, highest joule rating in the price category (unless of course they are lying through their teeth).
The equivalent Belkin model surge protection rating is nowhere near CyberPower.

    • Mine has been good, recommended, high joule rating.

(got 2 of them when they were 2 for $39 from Shopping Square just over a year ago).

    • What would be a better buy?

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up. I almost bought one

    Code does not work

    • Are you an eBay plus member?

      • i am,
must be a old voucher used from like a month ago~

    • Code is one-time use. I think I did better off with a case of beer

      • +1

yea i think i used this code awhile ago.
makes things confusing when new deals show up on ozb

      • -2

        Why up vote

  • +1

My eBay Plus membership expires this week. Are they doing any retention deals? Probably time to give it a rest…

    • +3
      • +1

        Thanks!

      • Thanks I got the $40 voucher instantly but no $30 unfortunately ☹️ Maybe they’ve closed that loophole now…

  • +11

Have had two of these for a while now and I have mixed feelings about them. The “protection” for the price is excellent but they suffer from quality control issues. Namely loose sockets and possible wiring faults resulting in the sockets crackling from insertion.

    • +1

Yeah I had a couple sockets stop working, opened it up and found the soldering had come apart on them.

I do still have 3 others from years ago that are all working fine (so far)

  • +2

Used to be under $20 few years ago. Grab 1 anyway.

  • Cheers OP, I was looking for new board shorts. On a side note, at least this deal is actually a deal and not some lame stickers.

  • +7

Rather pay a little extra for the belkin ones that pop up on sale on amazon now and then

    • How do these fare up against the Belkin ones?

      • +4

Well based on comments alone on this thread, I’d say not good.

  • +2

read bad reviews, then read confirmed bad reviews here. therefore, not in for 1. ty

  • +1

    price jacked?

  • +1

Takes up so much real estate, and yet the sockets are tightly against each other, ensuring zero room for power bricks. :D

    • That's like all of them, unless you get specially spaced powerboards

  • +3

Seems the general consensus is that these surge protectors aren’t worth it.

For those in the know, what would you recommend for the average consumer looking to protect to their electronics?

    • +1

Brand name like belkin? Pretty frequently goes on sale on amazon

    • A basic HPM/Arlec protector. You can get them for less than $20 at Bunnings.

      • Durable and would do the trick
Usually very low surge protector joule ratings
Gotta pay otherwise,. But happy with these.. not sure what everyone else is doing, bloody rough or not pushing them in straight

  • Main switch acts as a kills switch for the breaker!

  • +2

I have a few APC's that have lasted me at least a decade. I would highly recommend them easily over Belkin / cheap stuff

    • +1

Second this as I have had to send belkins back under their lifetime warranty, which I think they have downgraded to just a few years.

  • -7

Apparently this is a pile of garbage that burns your house down and doesn't work but no one who has purchased it will down vote it

    • My house hasn’t burnt down …..yet

    • I have several of these in my house and they’re great. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.

Also when you say apparently, does that mean you’re trash talking them / downvoting without even owning one?

    • Mine hasn't burnt down either.
Doesn't it cover 30-40k of connected gear anyway?

  • Thanks, been eyeing the power board for a while, finally pulled the trigger.

  • +2

omg i bought one without reading the comments, why are people upvoting this? When i get the product i'll do an electrical test on it and write an honest review.

    • Yes make up own mind and test it out
Most people just commenting and or prob don't have one.. you don't always hear form happy customers

      • I mean I commented after making up my own mind and testing it out. If you get a good one, it’s good for the price, but it seems like there are a lot of duds in circulation.

        • No worries
Must be some different batches or varying quality, or people just rough

    • That would be interesting! Could you reply here when you post the review?

  • I bought one of these last week and have mounted it upside down under my table. No issues with crackling, plugs falling out, zaps, or short circuits (so far)

    • What did you use to mount it?

      • Mounting it out 2 lemons plz

      • +1

I used a few command strips

  • +1

So i opened it up and had a look,
    - the 5v usb transformer runs of the 240v rail for the power points
    - everything is chinese made
    - bus lines are used for the power point connections which is fine
    - the circuit protection looks sketch but works fine
Overall its arlec quality without the branding but just don't overload with it like 2 toasters

  • -1

People seem to be forgetting that the cyberpower has great surge suppression, 2750 joules. The kmart one would be lucky to have any.

Also using a Belkin 6 Port powerboard which has 650 Joules

  • If you can afford to pay a little more, I bought this surge protector and the build quality is leaps and bounds better along with higher surge protection.
    https://www.binglee.com.au/products/crest-pwu06905c-6-socket…

I got the Cyberpower one for about $20 a while back on sale and it's good but I don't trust using it with my more expensive equipment.
Def better than cheap boards from Bunnings/Officeworks/Kmart
