Spend a little bit more and buy a proper laptop, any specific reason why to buy this?

    • +7

Never understood the market for these price points. The whole reason for compromising with ChromeOS was supposed to be the lower hardware requirements and thus lower price. If its requirements are approaching windows/mac level of hardware, where is the value proposition?

I feel the $599 model is a pretty strong alternative to a basic iPad or barebones laptop at that pricepoint. This $797 isnt even a sale price.

        • Agree, $350 for original duet is about all its worth. Pretty screen but as much as I love android, chrome OS feels half baked and runs very slow on the original duet.

      • If requirements approach, prices do that to. Legit.

If you'd actually read the answers, you might.

No, you've clearly made no effort to find out about it, so what is the point? Trying to feel superior?
Have you even heard of the Chromebook Pixel? A very high-end device from 2013, made to demonstrate what a Chromebook could be.

        1) AFAIK, it is still cheaper than any windows device of the same quality.
        2) Even if it isn't, ChromeOS has advantages, though Windows admittedly does not suck as badly as it used to.
You get a more reliable, secure, maintenance-free, efficient, nag-free OS. And Android app support as a bonus.

        • Whoa nelly! Someone's knickers are in a knot.

I feel like I may have personally offended you, in which case I want to clarify this was not an attack (on yourself personally or Chromebooks in general). As others have mentioned, up to around $500, I see the value that Chromebooks have, and I actually recommend them to lots of people.

But to ME, the whole point of the Chromebook is value for money. Once you start spending money on premium build qualities, screen resolutions & technology, more RAM - to what end are these being justified? Do they improve the experience for someone whose needs would be fulfilled by a Chromebooks technical offerings? In my opinion for $700, you can get a base level iPad with a magnetic keyboard case + stylus and be much better off. Could probably get some windows based tablet/2in1 for a similar price range too.

reliable, secure, maintenance-free, efficient, nag-free OS.

I feel that this is not as much of a leading differentiator compared to Windows (10, not 11 - which is still a bit fresh off the press) which has indeed come a long way as you conceded earlier.

And Android app support as a bonus.

Fairly certain this is about to land with windows with the recent improvements to WSL, so not really a Chromebook-only advantage.

@Kill Joy: not offended, just mildly annoyed while in a bad mood over an unrelated more serious matter, hence the exasperated tone :-)

This seems to come up all the time on chromebook deals, and as been answered.
It sounds like you are now saying you personally prefer Windows, which is fine.

But you seem to think the only point of ChromeOS is to save money?

It's a bit like when a Macbook deal is posted, and somebody comments "you can get a Windows laptop with same specs for less."

to what end are these being justified?

exactly the same ends as on a Mac or Windows, I guess.

            get a base level iPad

CPU excepted, that is more comparable to the $300 duet. The 13" ipad is $1600. And it runs IOS, so not a proper desktop machine, too restricted. The Duet runs a full, uncrippled, desktop web browser. As does a Mac, not an Ipad.

Not everyone compares Chromebooks with windows laptops. I reckon this is a fantastic deal as you get an OLED tablet that's 13.3", the Samsung S7+ that I own is a 12.4" tablet and costs $1,447 @officeworks only 6gb RAM and 128GB storage and you don't get a keyboard! Or compare this Chromebook to a windows detachable laptop, try buying any windows OLED detachable laptop at this price with 8gb/256gb memory. This is a fantastic price for customers that desire these specs.

      • At this price point and specification, the Chromebook sings. It is light, portable, has great battery life and great screen for working anywhere.

For something close to similar in the Windows environment, I'd be looking at $1200 or more, and it would likely be heavier and less battery life (not to mention a stupid widescreen that might be good for media, but useless for document work).

And a Ryzen 5950X as a minimum CPU spec.

    • It lags on RM Williams sometime.

  • Getting not available in store or to click and collect…..

  • cheaper at $599, this comes with 8GB RAM instead of 4, double the storage (but still eMMC) and comes with the stylus.

    so 4GB ram, 128GB eMMC and stylus = $198
    hmmm hard sell

      so 4GB ram, 128GB eMMC and stylus = $198

Technically, that logic only applies if the cheaper one is upgradable.

It depends on how you will use it. If only using Chrome, the 4GB is good.
But any serious use of Android or Linux apps might need more RAM and storage.
If you want the stylus, its not a huge extra cost. Personally, I'm happy with finger and mouse on a 13".

  • you can buy a real computer for this amount.
