  • Won't it be close to being out of support this year?

    • +25

If the iPhone 6s is still supported, the 8 probably still has 2-3 years left in it I'd imagine.

      • -2

Is the 6s sill supported? About to throw mine in the bin.

        • +7

Yes, my 6S Plus is still going very strong. Replaced the battery a year ago, and it keeps on going and going and going.

          • @CONUT: Eveready battery?

            • +2

              @cheaponos: Eneloops more likely

            • @cheaponos: whatever the guy at the no-name phone service shop replaced it with. Replaced my camera, screen and battery for $220. Going better than when it was new.

        • Could I buy it off you?

      • +3

Both models have 2GB RAM, which may be a limiting factor for upgrades.

    • +3

It’s from 2017. Probably another 2-3 years left in it.

      • +6

yep, apple seem to have at least 7 years updates ….

    • +1

I would say it’s got about 2-3 years more support

    • +2

My 2016 iPhone SE has update 15 ready to install. So the 8 must still be supported for a while longer.

      • Mine refuses to upgrade past 14.7.1 due to lack of space.

It suggests plugging it in to a computer to work around that, but it still doesn't want to upgrade.

        Oh well.

        • +2

When u look at your storage is there alot of “other” in the storage?

        • Even when updating via iTunes?

        • Mine is only 32gb but keeping apps to what I need I usually have 5 plus gb free and I have the ability of upgrading.

        • Go into your manage apps and "offload" every app you can. After freeing up some space connect your phone to a computer with iTunes installed and perform the system update through that.

    • +1

Do you need support? If you just want a cheap phone, just keep it on whatever OS it's on and run it til it breaks.

      • or nothing runs on it anymore…..

    • +2

iPhone 8 released 2017, received the latest iOS 15.2.1 this month
iPhone 6S released 2015, received the latest iOS 15.2.1 this month

even iPhone 6, released 2014, received a security update in September 2021 to iOS 12.5.5 (so not the latest but still receiving security support). Same goes for the iPhone 5S, released in 2013. The same can't be said of the iPhone 5 which hasn't had an iOS update since 2019.

tl;dr Apple gives about 6 years of feature support and 8 years of security support

  • +5

This has been an ongoing deal for ages.

Refurb quality is actually very very good.93% battery on one I picked up

    • -5

Really? I have 94% battery now and I’m considering changing the battery.

      • +16

        80% battery is time, imo.

      • +6

Anything above 90 is really good. Apple themselves say change a battery when it's close to 80.

      • +3

Wife's phone battery fell off a cliff at about 75%, didnt last more than a couple of hours and actually dropped a cell about a month after (would go from 40% to 0 in a few minutes). We replaced her battery and my battery (which was about 83% health) at the same time, and I noticed a bit of extra life in the battery (maybe 45mins real world usage), but not much more.

        • Did you replace it with an Apple battery or third party battery?

          • +2

@Scope: I got a genuine apple battery, wifes phone got an aftermarket. Aftermarket battery stayed at 100% longer than mine, and she uses her phone way more. Take from that what you wish, it could just be the reporting of the battery to the phone.

  • -2

Just be weary on the warranty and post sales support on these phones.

    • +3

      weary on

      wary of?

      • +5

In his defence apple's terms and agreements is one giant sleeping pill.

      • Wary that these will have no warranty with apple and that if you do want to claim a repair under warranty you would have to do so with boost or coles, both of which I haven't heard anything great about.

  • Will samsung trade-in accept this phone?

    • +2

Yeah, currently $60. Provided it's Australian stock.

      • Thanks.

  • Carrier locked?

  • I grabbed one last week to replace an 8 my baby threw on the floor. 91% battery, pretty much physically flawless and no hardwired camera shutter, so they're pretty decent. Stock levels are fairly low though.

    • hardwired camera shutter, will mean its a Japanese region phone

      • +1

What is a hardwired camera shutter?

        • +19

The loud software based camera shutter sound that can't be disabled. They enforce it on Japanese phones to prevent perverts taking photos without consent, basically.

        • +42

More specifically, it is to try and curb upskirting in Japan.

If you’re ever looking at phones on eBay or Gumtree or wherever and want to know a quick way to identify a Japanese model iPhone:

          • If the model number starts with M, it is almost always an iPhone sold as a new device. In this case, a Japanese iPhone’s model number should end in J/A. You’ll be able to see this in Settings > General > About.

          • If the model number starts with N, it is a refurbished device supplied from Apple as a replacement device. I don’t think there’s a specific way to identify replacements devices from Japan. I once received a refurbished device from an Apple Store with a model number starting with M, but pretty much every other refurbished device I’ve seen starts with N.

          • If the model number starts with F, it was a refurbished device sold directly from Apple. I’m not sure if this is used in Australia or Japan; I think it may only be for the US market.

          • If the model number starts with 3, it was demo device. Run for the hills if you see one.

      • Yeah I bought one in March last year (for the same price actually) and it was hardwired. Thankfully this isn't, because boy was that creepy

    • What app do you use for checking battery health?

      • +2

No app needed in the last few versions of iOS. Settings -> battery -> battery health

      • +1

If you have a Mac, you can also use coconutBattery to view information on the battery, including:

        • The battery health as a percentage (which can be a different number to the one reported in the iPhone’s Settings),
        • The number of cycles,
        • The battery’s manufacturing date (and subsequent age).

Settings won’t tell you about the last two dot points.

  • Any chance there are a few in WA?

    • I bought one in Coles Joondalup in WA a few weeks ago. Great phone.

  • +1

2gb memory only, is that fast enough?

    • Depends how hungry the hamsters are.

    • +1

4GB would be recommended. 3GB the bare minimum now for future updates.

      • +2

Apple was selling the 6th Gen iPad until September 2019, and it had only 2GB of RAM. I reckon most 2GB devices will be supported for a few years yet.

  • Refurbished iPhone 8's are $304 on Amazon with I think 90 days warranty and claim to have 80% battery health at a minimum.

I've seen some reviews where that isn't always the case, but at least Amazon returns system is good.

    • +4

80 is really bad though; I had a previous iphone5 that got down to 78% and it really struggled; i brought it back to apple for a screen issue and they replaced the battery under warranty at the time in addition to the screen. The genius said themselves that 80% is time for replacement.

      • -1

I imagine these Coles ones aren't much better either unfortunately, I would consider getting a refurb iPhone 8 as considering the cost of battery replacement.

That being said, $300 Motorola would be a better option.

        • +2

Now on Boost online they have iphone 8 refurb same price as Coles delivered as well as an

iphone 8 with new battery for around $287 more, as well as many other iphones and others.

  • YMV?

    • +2

Your milage may vary. I guess I goofed that anacronym.

      • When I searched YMV, Urban Dictionary gave me a different answer…

    • +5

      Should be YMMV.
      Your mileage may vary.
      Basically means good luck.

  • +5

    But can it run Crysis?

  • Is it worth getting a 5 years old refurb phone for $279?
Just wondering whether refurb iphone will comes with a brand new battery
Otherwise 5 years old battery will have been deteriorated quite a lot?

    • +9

Compare to spending $279 on a refurb iPhone 8
Probably better to pay another $150 to get a refurb iPhone SE 2020

iPhone SE 2020 (vs iphone 8)
      A13 (vs A10)
2 years old (vs 5 years old)
      3GB ram (vs 2 GB)

at least you are confident for another 3 years OS upgrade from Apple

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/perfect-preowned-apple-iphone-s…

      • +2

It kills me upvote a Kogan link, but that does look like a better option if your budget can stretch that far.

    • Maybe if you still have a 7

  • +3

I have an iPhone 7 I use a few times a year. I had to update to IOS to use banking apps.

Since this, my phone has been much slower (expected) but it’s started showing it’s age.

Even though the 8 is newer and Apple claims 25% faster. I’d imagine there isn’t much life left in an 8.

You’d be better off spending a bit more and getting a newer model iPhone.

Having a home button with Touch ID. Has been useful when wearing a mask though.

  • Glad I know nothing about iPhones!!

  • +1

Use this for Samsung trade in but never send it in XD

  • +2

Bought two of these from the last deal.

One phone had 100% battery health. Deep scratches on the volume button and the camera lens ring.

Second phone had 71% battery health. Returned for a replacement. When the phone was assessed and they agreed the battery issue was as described, they advised me they had no “suitable” replacement stock on hand and I would have to have a refund. The Coles I purchased the phones from still has them in stock. Stupid warranty/replacement system. Would have been happy to have the phone returned and be reimbursed $79 for an Apple battery swap.

  • The battery life on these when new was pretty average on the best of days.
Cant think of how short it would be now.

  • +1

    Cheap helicopter for refuelling interstate?

    • +1

Could go cheaper, the iPhone 6 is the oldest model that is suitable.

If buying on Facebook/ Gumtree, gotta make sure icloud is signed out.

      • +3

Incorrect, still works on iPhone 5S :P (have one and also using it for the chopper)

        • +1

Well, I take that back. As if the 7-Eleven app was not supportive enough (in app compatibility).

    • Go android for that.

      • +1

easy to use 3u tools on ios.

  • -1

I had a phone not long ago, due to the pandemic I realized something, open it up and replace the screen, and as I continued I noticed the digitizers backplate (can't speak for iPhone when using different parts, but hear me out here)then with my current phone using a 660 Snapdragon I realized source a 855 Snapdragon and gut it(the previous owner had the digitizer class smashed so bad, the sides were damaged, the phone wouldn't boot so I purchased it for $50)but removed all the aluminium components that housed the chips position to the old 660 Snapdragon frame and as I did I realized I just upgraded my phones specs.

Now the screen I had was a 6.91 screen for a phablet but given the batteries 5000mah, and the cameras got a few issues (like facial identification, and camera issues I must say it actually works, there are caveats to consider) reason for doing this was due to the pandemic.

Now all we need is Google or apple to start building phones that are eco-friendly.

    • +9

      what?

    • +2

      lolwut

    • +2

I want whatever this guy is on

    • +2

      Am I having a stroke

    • +10

Translation: I have owned an iPhone quite recently but because of the current COVID-19 pandemic, it lead me to a realisation. So I took apart the said iPhone to replace the screen and as I continue to do that i noticed the screen (digitizer) backplate (which is where the screen is connected to). Back to my current phone which uses a snapdragon 660 processor. I realised that I could source a $50 dollar phone that runs snapdragon 855 and fitted it on my old phone that used to run SD660 and suprised myself with my own genius that I've just upgraded my phone's specs

Now the screen that I had is for a phone tablet hybrid but given that the battery is 5000mah and the camera is faulty, the process was an actual success albeit a few problems to consider. My reason for doing this is because of the pandemic.

Now all we need is for Google and Apple to build interchangeable parts for their phones to make it more eco friendly.

editors note: I'm in isolation and had time on my hands. I'm sorry. The guy actually made a good point but it was just a bit difficult to understand

      • +2

can you please translate jv next ;)

      • -2

I suspect alot of burnout happens in your life.
        🤭
I also suspect a early mid life crisis happening too.

But to be fair and all the reply was towards something that never happened. 🤣

Plus I'm female, but hay we all make mistakes like @bakemon does when researching.

    • +1

This is what Trump would sound like if he were a tech enthusiast.

  • +2

Got one of these about a month or so for my dad and the phone had 100% battery health and was in pristine condition, must have been lucky? Would not hesitate to buy another one from them if needed.

  • Surely this would run like garb, with latest supported OS, some unsupported apps and throttling.

    • +9

nope. cpu is still decent and ios is so well optimized.
