Gigabyte G5, i5-10500H, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.6in FHD IPS 144hz Laptop $1579 + Delivery @ PC Case Gear

110

Saw this when looking for a laptop for the misso. Goes alright, heat and fans go a bit high but with a cooling pad and limiting CPU power it’s cooled down a bit.

For anyone who wants a nitro alternative with any extra 8gb of ram.

    FYI

    • 105w 3060, not max-p unlike what gigabyte is claiming here and no mux switch

    • clevo chasis, removable battery

    • the i5-10500h while similiar in naming, is quite a bit better than the 10300h and 10400h since its a 6c/12t chip with 12mb l3 cache as rebranded from the i7 10750h, definitely wont bottleneck the gpu and means you can have discord and stuff open without hamper gaming performance

ELI5: what’s Max p and mux switch? Pro / cons

      • +3

max-p: short for max power. in which case the max power variant of 3060 should be 130w, unlike the 105w in this machine.

mux switch: if you dont have mux switch, the 3060 transfer the display data to the intergrated graphics before passing on to the the laptop display. Mux switch will be able to make the 3060 communicate directly with the laptop display. This will mean faster performance in games, especially in non graphic intensive fps games. only downside being worse battery life.

Still doesn't compete with the Kraken: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674128

Yes, only grab this if you think the warranty from a big brand is worth it.

In the kraken deal, I have small write up regardings questions anyone might have about the laptop in case anyone is afraid that its a no name brand etc. Im happy to take any questions in case you are on the fence about it because the kraken at 1.6k is one hell of a bargain.

      • Kraken laptop is simply a Intel Nuc X15 and warranty is handled by Intel

        • +2

That what i wrote in my writeup under the kraken deal in the first place mate. However, you cant blame people if they saw gigabyte vs a no name brand and automatically discredit the other brand

          • @Brrrrt: would have been hard to sell her on some no-named brand IMO ahaha. Still a great deal and happy with it. Missed out on the nitro deals and I do wonder how they compare. Got any info?

          • @Brrrrt: @Brrrrt
            Hey mate,
I'm leaning towards the FHD KRAKEN 3060, as it won't make much difference on a screen that small, but is there something wrong with the ram? I recall reading about it but I can't find it now.

@Enokserb: Hi there, sorry for the late reply. so basically, all laptops with 8gb ram sticks (so like 2*8gb) are using the slower double sided ram. As no more single sided 8 gb ram sticks are being produced. Only way to ‘solve’ this is to buy 16gb (or above) ram sticks. But this is an issue common to nearly all gaming laptops even the praised legion 5, or alienware or rog alike.

So if you buy the 32gb model (so thats two 16gb sticks) you are fine. If you buy the 16gb model - with only one stick, you need to buy another 16gb stick for dual channel. If you buy the 16gb model - two 8gb stick model, you should buy two 16gb sticks to replace the stock ram.

Of course this all costs more money so in the end it’s up to you.

              • @Brrrrt: What is your opinion on the FHD vs QHD of the 3060 model, I do need decent battery life (which I assume I can get in the QHD by lowering the resolution) but don't care about high Hz and I do like how crisp 1440p looks.
Also, should I replace the RAM with two single-sided 8GB sticks?
                Thanks!

                • @Reef: Yes. You absolutely should replace the ram with single sized 8gb sticks.

And i would also recommend the qhd version if you want to spend the extra buck, its totally worth it.

                  • @Brrrrt: Could you link the RAM I would need to get? I remember you mentioning that they don't make 8gb single ranked ones. Though I did find this one
                    Crucial 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz CL19 Single Stick Notebook Laptop Memory RAM https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B071KNKBQ1/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt…

                    Thanks again!

                    • @Reef: hi while this is indeed x8 single ranked ram, it is only 2666mhz as opposed to 3200mhz which the 11800h supports, as such you will look at a performance hit worse than x16 3200mhz ram.

this seems a pretty decent deal for 16gb 3200mhz ram, you can grab two for dual channel. But it is nearly ~190$ for 2.

this is slightly cheaper but ships from the US.

      • Double post

    • No numpad, no deal. Yeah you can get an external one, but what a pain.

This laptop is a joke compared to this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674128

        3.Kraken M15 Q Gaming Laptop i7-11800H QHD 165HZ 16GB(2X8GB) 1TB $1599 + Delivery

        4.Kraken M15 F Gaming Laptop i7-11800H FHD 240HZ 16GB(2X8GB) 512GB $1499 + Delivery

        • Ooo my bad

  • How about comparing to this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/673446

    • This have:

      +Better screen

      +Better cpu(yes its 14nm+++++++ compared to 10nm but its 6c12t vs 4c8t)

      +10w extra gpu wattage

      +16gb ram in dual channel

+both plastic build but the clevo chasis have better build quality cooling and smaller bezels

      -its nearly 400$ more

      • +Better cpu(yes its 14nm+++++++ compared to 10nm but its 6c12t vs 4c8t)

        The i5-11400H is 6c12t!

        • Ah my bad, thought it still had 4 cores like the 10th geb

Then the 11400h is better, but not by too much since same l3 cache and clocks.

          • @Brrrrt: Base clock is 2.7GHz vs 2.5GHz. L3 caches are the same yes but L2 cache is 7.5MB vs 1.5MB. 11400H also supports Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe 4. DDR4-3200 vs DDR4-2933 too.

  • After a bunch of dead mobos and a graphics card, I swore I'd never buy gigabyte again. Then I bought a gigabyte laptop, and it was crap from the get go. Dropping it was the best thing I ever did.
