I still can't see any reason why DAB radio needs to cost any more than a normal FM radio. Surely it's just a slightly different chip inside? When they can get these down to around $20 in stores, then people will be more interested.
This offer not too bad, but I'll wait before buying another DAB radio, especially since the one I've got does internet radio too.

    • Thanks for the feedback.

      • No problem, quick question though.
        Mono, but power is 1W x2 ?

Do you do any DAB radios with internet radio built in?

        http://www.appliancesdirectonline.com.au/virtuemart/grundig-…
If Grundig made this for $50 with internet radio added, I'd grab one for sure.

        • probably means there are two speakers but they still receive the same audio.

        • The only DAB + internet radio I know of is a Panasonic Micro HiFi which isn't available until mid May.
We have just lowered the price of that Grundig DAB+ Record & EPG Radio but not to $50 I'm afraid.

DAB+ radios are a lot more complex inside. This isn't an accurate comparison, but think of a DAB radio as a (FM radio + dial-up modem + mp3 player). While the radio part is pretty similar to an FM radio, everything after that is considerably more complex. It may still be a single chip inside the DAB radio, but there's a lot more inside the chip.

Adding to that, the manufacturers are probably having to pay license fees to patent holders for some of the digital innards, and currently DAB+ radios are made in much smaller quantites than FM radios, as DAB+ is only transmitted in a few countries around the world.

It's not that high a price if you compare it to similar-size battery-powered FM radios with an LCD display.

This is a pretty good price for a reputable(ish) brand.
I've only seen no-names at the $50 price point. Anybody got one? Sound OK? Any indication on how it performs in marginal reception areas?

    What is a radio…?

  • does it have 3.5" Aux port to accept audio out from smartphone (for Internet Radio)?

    • This particular model does not

  • For battery power, it needs 6 x AAA
Personally I think a 4 x AA configuration is better and more practical

    • I agree - but whilst not an electrical engineer one configuration gives you 9v and the other 6v, maybe 6x AA wouldn't fit?

Good deal thanks for posting - DAB may be a little more than FM tuners but the quality owns traditional radios!

  • I am looking for a DAB radio that has a sleep function, ie switch off automatically after 60 minutes.

    Are there any?

Personally, I use TuneIn Radio on my Android smartphone to listen to my radio stations. True it requires data, but I have plenty of it. Also, radio signal reception is no of concern, just need to have Wifi/3G access - anywhere in the world..!

    • I do that too, plugged into home theatre system by Bluetooth.

with all the finer quality DAB radio has to offer, I don't understand why they can't have decent speakers, maybe with a sub woofer attached to it…

    • My DAB radio has a wooden case and stereo speakers, the wood makes the bass a bit better than it would be in a plastic radio.

    • It is gradually getting better, there are micro systems with iPod docks & DAB+ starting to emerge.

  • Possibly a silly question but can it get AM?

    • Not a silly question, my DAB radio does not do AM radio. Possibly because it's all done on microchips, I don't think AM is done on a chip. Anyone else know if that's correct?

    • No it can get digital radio & FM only.
