            • +2

@Munki: lol, yes, takeaway some RATs !

          • @timhn: Restaurants in the UK sell them for around £2.50 so you can test before dining
The cost price for RATs in AUD is about $3.50
Just remember, we have the LNP to thank for the inflated prices.

Yep - I feel this is making supply, distribution and access worse. Should have been restricted to pharmacies, GPs, aged care organisations, community organisations (eg Red Cross, Salvos, people who work with homeless etc) .

Otherwise product accessibility really doesn't stack it as reason they selling it, more retailers selling RAT will exacerbate supply issue.

Oh that Gerry, he's a business prodigy he is.

        • That's because Gerry ordered a whole heap for private use to distribute through the stores - he's not stealing the national supply.

          • @buckster: Yes, but he ordered a whole heap when they were still in short supply (due to not much production) globally.

I'm not sure if there's ample supply globally now and we are just refusing to buy it, or if big corporations have got in and stolen stock that we could've had.

            • +3

@decc0: Plenty of stock available - most of its in transit. The reason we have a shortage is more government inaction than anything - we can even make them onshore but govt wasn't interested so our onshore companies are making them for the USA who were happy to put forward some cash and order them

  • +3

What's with the rush to get these?
I feel like it's way more of a want than a need.

    • +17

When you need it but then you can't go out of quarantine to find one or can't wait for 3 weeks after ordering online.

      • +2

go to a testing station …. they will test you again …….

        • It's still not uncommon to wait a week for a result…

          • +3

@Bren20: They can do RATs for close contacts at testing centres.

            • +2

              @morse: Some, not all.

There have been no RATs for purchase, or from testing centres within an hour of where I live for more than three weeks. And the local testing centre is only open three days a week for two hours each morning.

I found out I was a close contact on a Sunday, wasn't able to get tested until Wednesday (but was lucky enough to get my result the next day, while other people tested at the same location have sometimes had to wait a week, or been told that they need to be re-tested because they didn't get to process their test in time).

              • @kapone: Just an FYI, you can turn up to booking sites and if they have time/space they will usually let you in because you are there either a) symtomatic or b) told to be tested as a close contact, get there as early as possible and dont worry about booking unless its for your day 6 test as a close contact.
Atleast thats how its working in SA, longest wait so far for a test result has only been ~36hrs, your halfway recovered by waiting a week for a result.

                • @epoch: There are no bookings where I am, but as I said, only open for two hours, three days of the week. Not everyone in Australia has the same access to RATs and testing as other places in Australia, which is a failure of government.

        • +7

With positive PCR test rates around 25% in most states I'd say a lot of people are avoiding test clinics unless they're 90% certain they have COVID.

        • you can't go out of quarantine

          go to a testing station

Are you allowed to break quarantine to go to a testing station?

        • +2

Yeah - jump on public transport and then wait in a queue with others to get tested….only to find out you're still shedding viral load at transmissible levels and have screwed-over dozens/hundreds of other people.

          Sorry, that's a d*ck move.

          Spend $10-15 and stay home.

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: Or spend $0 and stay home.

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: how are you even mean to spend when all RAT kits are out of stocks? Just not get tested and roll the dice?

I can see your logic there, but it's like swiss cheese. Plenty of holes Mr Disk Jockey

            • @WillKillfor5Cents: Stop being an imbecile and sucking on the media hype teat. There are plenty of kits around. $10.50ea delivered in under 10mins here.

      • Both SA and ACT they hand over for free @ any testing clinics.

        • they do it in QLD too but every time someone I know try and get some, they're always out of stock. I'd also rather not fall in line starting 5am just to get a test which can take days for the result to come out and have to wait for the result to get out of quarantine.

        • If they have any left.
ACT has been having trouble getting enough for testing sites, and will only give them over if obviously symptomatic.

I know people who tried 3 days in a row to get some from the testing sites and got turned away, just as they were turned away for PCR, then decided to just not get tested.

Yeah you can get them from testing sites, but it's not as simple as you make it sound.

          • @Wilburre: Didn't had any issues getting them for high risk close contact category for few days ago for me.

        • Act was but they are now saying you should expect a PCR test due to constrained supplies. One rat test at a couple of testing centres only to be offered in limited circumstances.

    • -6

Never seen so many people want to depart with their hard-earned for what? Don't understand the fascination with them tbh. If work requires it, they should be providing. If the government requires it, they should be providing it.

      • +30

depart with their hard-earned for what?

Maybe they don't want to spread the virus to family and friends if they have it???

        • -6

If people are that worried about spreading it why leave it to a RAT test?

          • +1

@mickmac: You're right, if people need to leave the house they should skip being tested, so they can spread COVID everywhere unknowingly.

            • -7

@NobalaKoba: You don’t get tested for the flu do you champ?

      • +6

If work requires it, they should be providing.

Work requires you stay home and use your sick pay, if you a sick…

        • -8

if you feel so bad you can’t get out of bed stay at home and use sick leave , if you feel ok go i to office ….it’s what people did with colds and flu ….if you feel sick enough to be bed bound stay at home and use sick leave ……

the govt has trained people to. pay for their health care problem …… would you go to chemist and buy needle and do own blood test ….. would you pay for own measles test , no govt pays for it …..covid test are free at test stations and lines are shorter now people have crossed holiday borders …..

they will test for free at a station if you say you feel sick ….FREE if you say you feel sick …….

          • +1

@garage sale: We're also meant to prevent the spread which is why RATs should be easily accessible.

RATs would really have helped give people the confidence to get on with life and likely would have helped reduce the impacts to businesses.

      • +3

You really need to buy these for the next few weeks if you are unlucky to contract it, such as if you’re in Victoria. Recent positive friends had to isolate for much longer than 7 days and couldn’t leave the house until they had negative rat tests. The issue was actually getting their hands on the tests! This will be less of an issue once more stock comes in.

        • hmmm i need to leave home to buy one after 7 days …oops i was still positive ….. go to test station ……they will test you ……

          • @garage sale: You're right, people should leave the house while in isolation.

            • +1

@NobalaKoba: people may need to get essentials ….. not everybody has a test kit and if you need to test after 7 days you will need to leave to buy one …. friend went to test station they tested PCR and gave him 2x RAT incase results positive so he can test at home ….. and they are relaxing rules for essential workers …. if people need to go to work as they are in the bottom end of the income scale and they don't have a RAT kit e.g food delivery contractor, they will go to work to pay for rent and buy food ….. there are a lot of people with limited resources living hand to mouth and might be on Visas that don't offer much support …

we see the rules relaxing in regards to what is a close contact (4 hours from previous 15 minutes) isolation times (from 14 days to 7) and testing as reality hits home on the impact to individuals and also the economy, and empty chicken shelves in supermarkets and as kids return to school … kids catch up for maccas with friends after school, don't wear masks while eating and talking, and then bring it home …… you can't test your kids every 2 days ….. and some families or students live in crowded conditions …….

        • +2

While quarantining beyond 7 days if you have symptoms is obviously the right thing to do, the DHHS says:

Don’t get another test if you have already tested positive. You don’t need it. You are automatically released after 7 days.

        • This is the reason people who really need them can't get them. It's beyond ridiculous.

      • +3

If the government requires it, they should be providing it.

Scomo won't provide them because that would dig into the profit margins of the Pharmacist's Guild - the single most powerful union in the country (no, really).

In our case we've got a mix of kids that catch everything, and elderly relatives that want to see those kids but need to be protected; so we've been going through them at a fair clip.

      • Not to mention the mere fact that retailers like this who are selling these (who really shouldn’t be) are making an absolute motsa.
I’m not bending over and copping a pineapple to the clacker just to line the pockets of those that don’t need it.

        • some la es are selling RAT to get foot traffic for extra sales …e.g dan murphys sell em you buy test kit ohh and a slab of beer 2 bottles of wine and some gin ……

it’s to get foot traffic …..

        • Not to mention the GST he is collecting.

      • Yes. But the government aren't providing them, and workplaces are also struggling to source them.

I live in a fairly busy and populous regional area, but RATs haven't been available for purchase with an hours drive for more than three weeks, despite having several supermarkets (including a Woolies and a Coles) and pharmacies.

Local PCR testing is limited to 2 hours a day, Wed-Fri (and they haven't had RATs to hand out either, unlike some metro testing locations).

A RAT gives a result in 15mins, while a PCR test can take days for a result (during which you must isolate at home).

It's BS that we're running around like crazy trying to source them when the government should just be providing them, but there is a real need for them.

        • now that you are running around, it has become nomalised behaviour …… if I go to supermarket and they are available I might buy one …… I'm not going to drive around like pokemon go.

    • +18

What's with the rush to get these?

To test yourself if you have symptoms… Otherwise you need to queue up for a PCR.

Especially if you're about to go out to catch up with family/friends.

      • +1

If you have symptoms of anything, don't give that anything to family and friends. Just stay home…

        • +9

It's pretty hard to pass a headache onto family and friends if it's no due to covid…

          • +1

@jv: Unless you're name is jv

          • @jv: Unless that headache is caused by one of the many other viruses or bacteria that are infectious.

Nobody wants your sickness. Just stay home.

        • You are infectious before symptoms.

          Some people don't have symptoms.

      • Fair point but I think that's overdoing it, and there simply isn't enough supply at the moment to be checking ourselves every single day we have some sort of symptoms.

    • It's almost peace of mind if you need to head out for an emergency or need to have a high-value face-to-face engagement.

    • +4

I got a 2 pack for $20. For less than an hour's pay I have peace of mind, can safely test myself while isolating and quickly send results to my boss for him to tell the other co-workers they may need to isolate.

The last thing I'd want to do is have to go out and line up with sick people, not knowing if I'm sick.

      • -1

tell your colleagues to isolate …..they need to go out and buy test orrrrr they go to test station …… when i got SMS i went to test station …. work also sent email to go and get tested ……. but you needed to leave home to go through the process ……who locks up after sms and has test kits and 7 days milk bread and other food ……i load up with with stuff before of for a test as it says go ho e and wait …..while i unpack my groceries and chill the beer and wait for results ……

        • +1

This feels more like a stream of consciousness than an actual reply but what I do is have groceries here, have alcohol here, have tests here (delivery is available for all of them btw). Literally no need for me to do anything else besides lay in bed watching TV if I were to catch it.

Not everyone lives in VIC which literally gives out free RATs.

        • Your a close contact or symptoms, you dont go shopping first. You isolate and get tested. Part of the process is , you get items delivered, surely you have friends/family/air-tasker/online shopping etc to get you through like the rest of us.If not , at least for SA Health you get a survey that asks if you need immediate assistance for food/medicine and if you need a call from someone… take that option.
Please dont faff about in public while possibly being infected, its just daft.

    • For international travel

    • +1

if your a possible close contact at work, they may request you get a test to comfirm that your not positive.

It's quite terrfying having to find one anywhere.

    • I agree, it feels like if everyone wasn't hoarding these there'd be enough to go around. the moment you get hoarding the system falls apart, but apparently the free market is the best way to distribute these…

    • Well if you're anything like me, I tested myself three times yesterday to get a positive result on all. I wasted two just to be sure it was legit…

      • +1

interesting would you test 3 times if they’re were negative …..to. make sure you aren’t positive ……

        • Unlikely, would depend on my symptoms though.

    • Same people fighting for these would've been climbing over each other to buy all the toilet paper too. Not the brightest bunch.

    • Because you are feeling ill and not sure whether you have a cold, covid or hayfever for example.

If you are exposed to someone with it and want to protect your family etc
