The Dyson Light Ball Multi Floor Plus is $200 off from Dyson’s website, as well as JB-HiFi and Hardly Normals. It appears it has been that price a few times at Big W, though it is still showing as $549 there at moment and $599 at some other retailers. I chose this after researching, including via Choice.

    $399.00

    • Just bought one in personfrom Hardly Normal’s QV Melb CBD store (I wanted it today, rather than waiting for delivery) and they have quite a few boxes on display, as well as likely a number in their storeroom. I’m not a fan of Harvey, but I’ll update the link to HN (or JB) if Dyson’s website is now out of stock

  • Thanks for sharing! What were your other top choices?

    • The only others we considered were the Bosch GL-30 and the Charles (wet/dry)/Henry (dry) vacuum. If the Dyson hadn’t been on sale and one of the others had, I might have got one of them, though the Dyson ticked the most boxes and was preferred from the start.

Some thoughts on this item having recently purchased one secondhand but in very good condition for 1/4 of this new price.

The construction seems very flimsy, thin plastic with lots of parts that could easily break in my opinion if not treated well (although no broken parts with mine). Perhaps this is by design given the "light ball" sales pitch but in reality it feels a bit cheap and plasticy.

The barrel is somewhat small and needs to be emptied quite often when cleaning a larger area.

It would be nice if the cord was just 1-2 metres longer for better reach. Doesn't reach as far as my old Vax Zen (which whilst a good machine initially, had some serious overheating problems in warmer climates).

There is a lump on the powerhead that makes it difficult to fit under low furniture.

Dust balls accumulate in the right hand side of the powerhead and spit out onto the carpet every now and then. I have given the powerhead a good clean and taken it apart and still does it so perhaps a design fault, not sure if just an issue with mine.

The concertina hose attachment is quite stiff and a bit of a pain for cleaning inside cars etc. I heard someone on a forum mention it is a good idea to stretch them and wrap around the machine overnight so that they don't spring back so much.

The brush attachment is soft bristle, probably good for some purposes but I prefer a harder bristle for cleaning car carpets and upholstery etc.

On the upside, suction is pretty good with powerhead working. Filters are washable.

This is our first upright in a very long time and not sure if its a keeper or not yet.

    • The reported suction and carpet cleaning score on a certain comparison website was what sold us on this vacuum cleaner. Most the other vacuum cleaners we looked at were significantly more expensive and/or had a significantly lower carpet cleaning score. We almost went with the Bosch GL-30 (which has been $70 previously on OzB), but it is $240+ on all the websites I checked and apparently isn't quite as good at cleaning carpets.

Do you have recommendations for the <$400 pricepoint? I think it would be handy for fellow OzBargainers to have these sorts of recommendations.

      • Yeah I also heard this Dyson scored well on Choice although havent read the review, but also have read some negatives on other review sites (you often hear the negatives more for a product though).

I forgot to mention that the head on the Dyson is quite wide at 340mm, which is good for quicker coverage but for my use means I cant get into smaller width spaces that I could with my previous machine (such as between the toilet and wall for instance.), not without switching to the hose attachment anyway. I guess that's a trade-off with faster coverage.

I don't have a recommendation unfortunately, my old Vax Zen Powerhead was great at cleaning, but suffered a common overheating issue and would often shutdown for 20 mins particularly in warmer months (maybe it was a bit like the old VW Combi vans and designed for cooler climates).

Not sure if you have your Dyson yet but interested to see how it goes for you and also what you think of the construction of the dust container in particular, that part almost feels like a toy to me. Keep in mind that whilst my unit is in good condition, it is 1-2 years old.
